About Mrs. Hot Cocoa

Bustle and Flow

February 19th, 2009 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Hot Cocoa

I hadn’t planned on displaying my bee-hind to you so early; I thought you’d at least take me out to dinner first. But since yesterday’s Weddingbee Wiki post was on bustles, I figured I’d be topical and show you the photos of my bustle from my second fitting yesterday.

My seamstress, Anahit (who, incidentally, is quite possibly the best bridal seamstress in New England — thanks, Mrs. Toucan, for the recommendation!) put in a one-point French bustle — simple, classic, perfect. And she blew my mind by showing us that you can wear a French bustle two ways. First, she created a mermaid’s tail look:

But with a simple flick of the wrist and some magic, Anahit changed the bustle to a more drapey look:

I prefer the second on my dress, since it’s a bit more fluid and dynamic. The first bustle is more sculptural — perfect for a dress with a more architectural aesthetic, like a Romona Keveza; a stiffer fabric, like a silk mikado; or a bride with a naturally smaller tail.

Does your dress have a bustle? What type? And are you still taking me to dinner, now that I’ve already put out?

The second looks great…definitely more “drapey” :)

Any Chicago bees have good reccomendations for alterations within the city? This bee has no clue! :)

I didn’t know one bustle could have two different looks. Both look great, but I see what you mean about the second one. And HC, if you come on down to Philly, I’ll wine and dine ya! ;-)

I love the second one! I am currently having a bustle crisis lol. My dress looks really weird in the french bustle, and it hides all of the pretty lace. :( I am trying to come up with some alternatives, but it is hard when I am the one wearing the dress! I wish I could get behind myself lol.

I’m not quite sure what the magic seamstress did with your bustle…but you are one gorgeous bride with one HOT booty, if I do say so myself :)

Miss Stiletto … I’m using The Dress Doctor in Water Tower Place (run by Soheila, but I have Giselle).

They were recommended by my dress shop (Belle Vie). Have only had the first fitting so far, so had to tell, but they seem very good. My contact at Belle Vie said that Oprah has her tailoring done there, but that could have just been a line! :)

Haha! Put out. I like the second one, too. Apparently, my dress won’t work with a bustle because the fabric is too soft. Sadness, because I really like the look!

@lou:
Are their prices rediculous or have you found them to be pretty reasonable? I’m trying to get a rough, rough budget on this one :) Hoping to not need much more then bustling!

Thnaks!

@MagPie518 & @Miss Quiche: Thanks, ladies. I am a very good date, if I do say so myself! Not handsy at all!

@PrettyKitty & @Elizabeth: Anahit is awesome. I really couldn’t recommend her more highly.

@Miss Stiletto:
Hmm, I can’t really say I did much shopping around, but I would think their prices are towards the ridiculous end … mine came to about $500, but I am getting quite a few changes made (neckline changed, arm holes lowered, altered around bust and hips, train cut off).

I’m not sure how much it would be just for the bustle, but it might be worth asking them.

@Miss Stiletto: if you feel like driving a pretty mile WAY outside the city, my seamstress does alterations for super cheap in NW indiana.

A friend of my aunt does alterations as well in a south suburb: Palos Heights, I believe.

Both really reasonable, PM if you wants details!

hi miss stiletto, i’m also getting my dress altered by soheila at the dress doctor. i haven’t been yet, but i’ve heard absolutely amazing things and belle vie sends all of their brides there (they also told me about oprah so hopefully it’s true–and faith hill too). regardless, i’ve had friends take other clothes there and they’ve been really happy!

At first I didn’t notice the difference, but after going back and forth a few times I definitely like the second one better.

@Miss Stiletto: I second that, looks much better! I have an over bustle, my train is too long not to have a bustle.
