Learning Lessons Everywhere

February 19th, 2009 @ 6:31 pm by Mrs. Cheese

We have a puppy.

And he’s a boy. :)

Well, to be accurate, we had a puppy who is now a rather handsome adolescent dog (I’m a proud mama).

Indiana Jones Jr. (What? It was the first movie we ever saw together!) has been incredibly helpful in teaching me skills for life, as I hear dogs are wont to do.

I struggle with the idea of being a team, my guy and I. In what I’m willing to call a flare of arrogance, I want to be perfect all by myself, so I tend to look at him as an aspirational example rather than a partner. Said another way, if what I love about him is that he’s funny, I try to be funnier rather than appreciate that he balances my seriousness.

Back to the dog. I’m the dog trainer, strategy researcher, curriculum creator, put-the-foot-and-lay-the-law-DOWN one. My guy is the resident playmate, puppy chaser, dog wrestler, rile-him-all-up one. Today it whacked me over the head that we’re the perfect pair. {My epiphanies often take the form of a rather violent smack upside the head.}

Without me, Indy Poopyhead Jones would have no manners. We’d be covered in muddy pawprints, stinky dog drool, and cat-poop dog breath. We’d be nipped and licked and sniffed in all sorts of uncomfortable ways. And we’d be unceremoniously stuffing a quickly growing dog into a crate on a regular basis, or using our bodies to try to prevent him from forcing his way out of the quickly closed door. Because of me, he happily trots into his crate at a softly spoken request.

But without my guy, Indy Stinkybutt would be a very well-mannered but slightly boring (and bored) dog. He’d never get to run around the yard maniacally chasing a sprinting and juking owner until they both collapsed in a heap. He wouldn’t get to lick a human’s face up one side and down the other without getting scolded. He’d miss out on the unique experience of a sudden full body hug from a full-grown man. And he’d never have gotten a sibling. Yup, our pup was gifted with another dog of his very own.

Meet Beau.

He likes full body hugs, too. And someday, he might even have manners.

I’m think I’m beginning to understand this team thing. Have you learned about your relationship in unexpected ways?

They are so cute! I learned this the same way you did. That is how Mr. FF is with our children. And I can see it in our future. But he is like that. We truly balance each other out in so many ways from cleaning, emotions, money and well everything else in between I guess that is why I love him so much he is my other half that I couldn’t and I am not. As I am his!

AWWWW, I want Beau…so cute. I am jealous, we live in a teeny tiny apartment with no yard so we don’t feel fair about getting a dog, even though we both want one. We do have my 10 year old kitty cat who thinks he is a human baby, a doggie and a kitty all rolled into one.

Mr PK is the push over, I am totally the disciplinary figure.

I L-O-V-E This post. This is my life, and well my dogs life. Harley (aka Harley Monster) is a well mannered, well loved, barrel of fun. She doesn’t play much with me (well she actually refuses to tug anything with me and instead politely stops and waits for her next command), but does so with FI with all the fervor and passion of a dog chasing a littermate. Though sometimes it makes me sad that she will not chase and play with me, I have come to understand that this balance that FI and I have found, makes our little world structured yet happy. Thanks for the post

@kathrynrw: MsJoe called it - he’s a German Shorthaired Pointer mix (we got him at the pound, so that’s all “alleged”).

OMG that is so funny!! My FI and I are like that too! I often tell FI that he’ll never know the difference between playing and scolding because they both sound the same when he does it!! (My dog actually understands SARCASM?? That’s a GSD for you…)

Miss Cheese, I love all your posts. You remind me in this crazy, wedding obsessed time in my life why I’m actually getting married. Just when I think I’m heading toward the bridezilla realm, your posts knock me back into reality.

As alike as we both are (we’re both Sagittarius’s) we’ve got a few big differences. He’s a thinker, I’m a doer. I thought this difference would frustrate me, being the “Miss independent-I can do it better/faster myself” kind of gal. But he reminds me to slow down and think things through. He helping me to learn how to have a little patience and that good things come to those who wait.

And I inspire him to get things done and he’s learning that not everything has to be done perfectly. He’s done more work on the house since I moved in than he had in the 9 years he’s owned it!

My head-slapping epiphany was that this quiet, quirky, gentle man is teaching me to be a better person and I’m teaching him to stop thinking and to live in the moment.

We’re fostering a puppy right now and after a week of having her, the fiance got too attached (still is) and we’re going to adopt her. I’d love to foster other puppies but then the fiance will want to keep them all.

He’s really surprised me as far as “parenting”. I predicted he would just be the fun, playful one but he’s actually firm in disciplining the pup and I AM the one pleading with him to be a little lenient. Who knew?

@lobstergirl: He’s 55-ish pounds, and he looks like a German Shorthaired Pointer X (we got him from a local animal rescue at 10 weeks).

My fiance and I are the same way with our puppy (who’s about a year old now). It’s hilarious to watch the two of them chasing each other around and fighting (playfully) over one of Simba’s stuffed animals.

BEAU!!! We have a beau, too! but he’s a golden retriever, and beau’s short for Beauregard! Regal, eh? ;)
Why is it that keeping pups away from kitty poo is so hard???
Our friends call it “kitty-rocca” (like almond rocca ;) )
Gratuitous pics of the fur-babies are on my blog ;)

CUTE! My husband and I have pretty much the same roles when it comes to our dogs. He lets them both sit on his lap and lick his face :)

We also refer to our second dog, Maude, as the dog we got “for” Nina (our first dog).

Awwww… what a pair of cuties! (The dogs, I mean ;)

It’s fun becoming a team with your man. My fiance and I have been “teaming up” to deal with some family drama of late, and it’s a nice preview of our coming life together.

I second Miss Cheese on using anything by Ian Dunbar. Jean Donalson is also great for training and understanding dogs.

@Miss Doodle Bug: Dear Miss Doodle Bug - noted. If they ever disappear, I will know where to send the cops. :)

@Sarah: I also like Karen London… but Pat McConnell is absolutely my favorite “get in your dog’s head” writer. Every time I read her books — I reread them often — I think, ‘A, ha!’ and I can’t wait to go try it out on my dog. And if you have two dogs, Pat McConnell and Karen London wrote a little booklet together called “Feeling Outnumbered?” that’s well worth the money.

@HistoryBride: Someone caught it! Yea, the mister’s talking about buying cleats so that he stands a better chance against four clawed paws. The shoe store guy asked, “Is this for soccer, or football?” His reply: “Um, for playing with my dogs.” The shoe guy was confused. :)

LOL, we bought a puppy for our dog when he was 6 months. We felt so guilty leaving him by himself after my husband found a job.

Indy Poopyhead Jones - Hahahahaha! you crack me up! I call my dog a poopyhead too! and he also enjoys the occasional cat-poop treat unfotunately. Your dogs are seriously cute. I wish me and my guy learned something via our pets, right now things are a little rough. He has a very badly behaved cat that he gave up on disciplining so I’m a little frustrated with him right now.
