Map Obsession: Part 1

February 19th, 2009 @ 5:08 pm by Mrs. Apple Cider

Are maps really necessary? Are they worth spending money on? My mother would say no, but I think they are a must! I have been thinking about our maps about as much as I think about our invitations, and many I’ve seen online have inspired me.

Map Obsession: Part 1 : wedding invitations stationery Il Full021 (map by Laura Hooper)

Map Obsession: Part 1 : wedding invitations stationery Il Full031 (map from the Etsy shop of Trial By Cupcakes)

Map Obsession: Part 1 : wedding invitations stationery Il Full04

(map from the Etsy shop of A Hot Pink Petticoat)

I knew after looking at these awesome maps that we needed one, but couldn’t afford to have one custom made. So I went through the steps of creating my own. More to come on that!!

First, here is what I had to work with.

Map Obsession: Part 1 : wedding invitations stationery Map (This map isn’t bad. It seems simple to follow, but has no HEART, if you know what I mean.)

Map Obsession: Part 1 : wedding invitations stationery Largear (This map is from Google but also has no heart!)

I decided to make my own, but you will have to wait until the next post to see it!

Are you including a map in your invitations? How did you spice it up?

check out 2birdstone on etsy. She made mine in digital format with lots of details including accomodation cards and directions for $30. They match my invitations and I printed them up at home. She did an amazing job and was great to work with.

I’m still not sure I want a map. I’ve been playing with DIYing it, but I haven’t had a lot of success. It feels a little unnecessary since 3/4 of the guests know how to get to the church as locals, and it’s really easy to get to the church for out-of-towners. The reception hall is only three blocks down the road from the church…GAH! I still want a map!

Maps were a must for my invitations. They are such a nice detail. I did them in Illustrator and was very happy with them. The icons I used were an actual vector drawing of the locations (ceremony, reception and hotel). Eveyone liked them.

I also was in the same situation - I wanted the custom map but not $.

So I made and printed my own for a total of $11. I used Adobe Illustrator and think it turned out great. I posted some helpful tips for DIYing your own custom map on my blog. I not only wanted it to show guests how to get to the venue but a little bit about us (where we met, live, etc.) so tried to also work in our personalities.

Good luck with your project - can’t wait to see.

I’m using WeddingMapper because I have the art skills of a 3 year old. A jittery 3 year old. LOL I can’t wait to see yours!!

I’m an Atlanta bride with a huge family, all of whom have no clue how to get around in “such a big, confusing city.” A map will be a must for us.

I’m going to do mine through the instructions on wedding mapper….and I think the map is more for my enjoyment than for my guests :)

I got it started a couple of months ago, but have been too lazy, errr I’m mean busy, to get that finished…

Wow! I’d been drooling over Laura Hooper’s work for a while, but now I can add Crystal Kluge to the list. I’m so jealous of people with that kind of artistic / drawing talent.

Maps are a total must sometimes, especially if you have out of town guests. My friends got married on the vineyard and had maps to where the buses were picking us up. Not to mention, they had diff locations for every event over 4 days. Yikes. Thank goodness for the maps!

If you’re not careful your guests will get 221, 321, 421 and Hwy 105 all mixed up so a map is a good idea! It’s easy to do around there…Man, I miss my mountains.
