Playing Dress Up

February 19th, 2009 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Duckling

When I was little I loved looking at my parents’ wedding pictures. Well, around Christmas time we were unloading boxes from the attic at my parents’ house and we came across my mom’s wedding dress. Immediately, Mr. Ducky and Daddy Duck were trying to convince me to try on the dress, while I kept saying no. This went on for a while before I gave in. My mom and I went to my old bedroom, opened up the dress that had been sealed for 26+ years, and I did another duck and dive.

You can tell the dress was from back in the eighties. My mom looked beautiful. I definitely did not. However, it made me laugh that some of my mom’s favorite dresses I tried on were modern versions of hers. She is a lace person. Anyway, I snapped a few pictures for your enjoyment. (Note: It was early in the morning when I took these, thus make-up and hair was not done. Maybe I’m getting too comfortable sharing awful pictures of myself with you guys!)

Well I probably won’t be wearing my mom’s dress on the wedding day. However, my mom and I think it would be special to take some of the lace and parts of her veil to create a custom veil for me to wear that day. This will be a perfect “something old” that recognizes my mom and dad’s wedding so many years ago.

Have you tried on your mom’s wedding dress? Are you doing anything on your big day to incorporate memories from your family?

My mom’s dress is quite similar to your mom’s! She wants to take the buttons from hers and put them on mine <3

I am wearing my mom’s dress for my wedding! It’s actually my grandmother’s dress that my mom wore too. I’m having some alterations done to update it a little bit but it’s originally from 1949 so it’s going to be authentic vintage.

Hehe, veeery lacy. I think it’s really awesome that you are going to take some of your mom’s lace and make it into a veil- how special! I’m sure she must love the idea of you incorperating what she wore on her special day into your wedding.

LOL! How wonderfully 80s!

If I DID try on my mom’s gown, I’d be trying on my grandmother’s as well — she wore altered her mother’s gown for her wedding! :-)

I tried my Mom’s dress on when I was in Middle School and it fit then- she was like a size 2. So no such luck in wearing it. But it is a fab 1960’s number.

Honestly, as far as 80s wedding dresses go, that one isn’t so bad!

Aww, I love this! We unsealed my mom’s dress and got it out, unfortunately since my mom was like 95 lbs when she got married, none of us could try it on, but I definitely rocked her Hat/Veil….YES, she had a Hat with the Veil attached…how 80s!!

I love your idea about adapting your mom’s veil :-D I thought about doing that, but my mom’s veil is the only part of her “ensemble” that didn’t yellow and its white and my dress is not :-(

OMG, I almost fell off the sofa! Hahaha, definitely an awesomely 80’s dress. You are too cute Ducky!

I think incorporating lace from your mom’s dress/veil into your would be wonderful. I wish my Mom still had hers.

Both my Grandmothers worked together to make my Mom’s veil, and I hope to recreate this with my Mom and FMIL the week before the wedding. I think that would be a neat tradition!

All the granddaughters in my family are getting a piece of our grandmother’s dress to somehow incorporate into our wedding. My sister got married last year, and she used the sleeve of the dress (which was lacy with buttons) wrapped around the bouquet. It was beautiful. I’ll probably copy her at my wedding too.

Looks pretty close to my Mom’s dress. They rocked those poofy sleeves back in the day.

I tried my mom’s on a 1971 number. It had a lot of damage and spots, not to mention it had been cut down for my size two Aunt. I wish it had usuable lace for a bouquet wrap. Grandma’s dress is long gone.

Its funny how styles change and to think how our children will look at our dresses and think wow mom you wore that.

my mom had a similar lacy dress that I tried on over christmas as well. Isn’t it fun to think of what your mom was thinking and feeling while wearing that same dress so long ago?

Super fun for pictures…probably won’t get worn again! I may take some wedding portraits in the dress to give to my grandmother (who wore the dress first in 1954) and my mom (who wore the dress a second time in 1983)

How cute! I could never fit into my mom’s wedding dress if I tried! She was like a size 0 when she got married—after having 2 kids!
