It’s OK to be Human!

February 20th, 2009 @ 11:01 am by Mrs. Ballet Flat

I haven’t updated you guys much lately on my progress with my diet/fitness plan. I got down to 247 lbs. last Thursday, bringing my weight loss to 18 lbs. However, I decided since last weekend was Valentine’s weekend, I wouldn’t sweat the calories so much and just enjoy it! After the Mexican food Friday night and the Beef Wellington that I made for V-day night, I gained two lbs back and am sitting at 249. Did I mention my lazy booty didn’t see the gym from last Wednesday to this Wednesday? I’m not bummed about this. I told myself to enjoy the weekend and I did! I can still stare at my paper clip chain holding 16 paper clips. (The one at work is spanning across my bulletin board! It feels awesome!!)

Now, this weekend is Mardi Gras weekend, and as you know, that stands for Fat Tuesday. This will be me over the weekend!! :)

Note: I wasn’t engaged at this point…the ring on my right hand is a $7 piece of costume jewelry that I would switch on my left finger in the rare event some weirdo hit on me.

Ok, ok. Just kidding you guys!!

I told myself that I will allow myself one meal of indulgence this weekend, and that will probably be Saturday night when I visit my aunt’s in Mid City for the Endymion Parade. If you EVER go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, this is the ONE parade that I HIGHLY recommend you going to. It’s known for the beautiful fiber optic floats, the best of the bands, celebrity grand marshals and SERIOUSLY, the most throws. My neck is usually sore holding all those beads (I usually only keep one or two collector beads and give the rest to little kids on ladders lol).

Ok, back to being human. I went to the gym last night for circuit class and Oh My Gosh… my thighs are so sore. It hurt to go down the stairs this morning!! I miss the sore feeling…however, I don’t think I’ve ever been THIS sore before. I think my instructor knew about me skipping out on class hehe! :)

I found some great tips in an email this morning from Beachbody (you know, the company that sells the latest workout tapes that are hecka expensive?).

Anyways, I hope these simple tips help a little. They sure made me think!!

Thanks for sharing your journey with us, and congratulations on your amazing loss so far! And I think you’re totally right not to worry about special occasions — a girl has to live a little! And you don’t want to feel deprived. I too am on a weight-loss journey. (Lost 10 pounds for my wedding but trying to keep it going! :))

It’s nothing new, but I really think writing down what you eat is key to altering your habits. Also, I’m attached at the hip to my Nalgene bottle, and drink a ton of water throughout the day, which keeps me feeling fit as a fiddle — even on days when I ditch the gym!

last night I had an epiphany that I am only 4 months away from my wedding, and if I’m ever going to strt good habits that produce lasting results…I have almost not time to get started!

My biggest weakness is taking that first bite (of ice cream, cookie, donut, whatever). If I can avoid that first taste, and subsitute it with fruit, I can usually stay away. It’s working well!

Thanks for sharing your journey!

Thanks for sharing your story and this article! And yes, back in the day before I met my FI, I would do the old ring switcheroo too to keep the weirdos away. :)

I work my butt off at the gym 4 or 5 times a week…cardio, cardio cardio! I’ve also completely changed over how I eat and eat out very rarely. My lunch is the same every single weekday…pb on wheat, lowfat yogurt, fruit.

After awhile, you just get into that groove where you don’t even want to “cheat” anymore…and when you do “cheat” it’s with things that are more or less healthy anyway (my big obsession is rye crackers w/ pb…oh wow I’m lame!). However, I’ve lost 30 lbs so it feels pretty good, and I still have 7 months to the wedding and beach honeymoon!

Good luck Miss B.F. :) Once it becomes all about feeling powerful during/after the workouts and feeling that high and less about the poundage, it becomes rewarding in a whole new way!

Hey, what’s two pounds compared with eighteen? You’ve already done amazing things!

And remember that on average, a person’s weight fluctuates up to FIVE pounds every day, just from regular things like meals, water intake, exercise, etc.

That’s awesome that you are doing well enough that you didn’t feel bad letting yourself enjoy the holiday(s)! Keep up the great work! I feel you on not being at the gym in a week. (I got the cold from hell.) I’m not looking forward to yoga tonight… for once. I know I’ll be sore tomorrow!

I think you are doing great!! You are doing awesome and are an inspiration! I’ve been trying to get myself in a better working out habit and have been failing miserably.
@Miss Stiletto: 30lbs!?! Go girl! How long did it take you?

My goal was to shed 10 lbs for our wedding, and I’ve gotten half way there just by eliminating soda, alcohol, and other calorie-containing liquids from my diet. Now I only drink water or unsweetened tea. I’m planning to pick up my exercise routine soon, so hopefully that will take me the rest of the way there!

You’re doing awesome Miss BF! I have to cheat every once in awhile too, and I cheated on Valentine’s Day weekend also. But like you when I went back to the gym I kicked my arse and now I’m back in the feeeling-good-about-myself-b/c-I’m-being-healthy groove :)

I had my mardi gras indulgence weekend last weekend. We did hung out on the parade route all day drinking my Woodchucks and eatin’ my Zapps! Then we had dinner at Cannon’s!

Now I’m paying for all the partying!

The more reason not to skip workouts. I havent hit the gym since the week of Vday, but since Ive returned from that Gulf Shores weekend, I havent ran since. Probably because of all these darn king cake binging.

Losing weight is a very healthy thing to do, and I encourage you to keep chipping away, but continue to enjoy your life and remember that you’re gorgeous the way you are.

Rock on, Miss BF. I totally agree with Miss Stiletto’s comment that the longer you stay loyal to your groove, the more natural it will feel, with a different kind of gratification (I think it’s the difference between feeling satisfication about accomplishing a goal, and feeling satisfaction about sustainaining a commitment).

I would highly recommend interval or circuit training. It combines cardio and toning/conditioning, so you work out more efficiently in less time. It helps you improve the efficiency of your muscles, and shed fat at the same time (and with toned muscle, you’ll burn more calories, and boost your metabolism, which in turn, helps you shed more fat). As I think I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been on a journey from 300 lbs on down for several years, so I know finding a routine and boundaries with yourself is a very personal part of it. Godd for you!

PS I would strongly recommend that you focus on inches rather than pounds in terms of gauging your success too!

I understand the frustration! I was 203lbs (size 20) and lost about 60lbs and have kept 50 lbs of it off for 6 years- I wear an 8 for most clothes now.

The hardest part is finding your own effective motivation. For me, the change happened when I stopped lying to myself about my true food intake, sleep patterns and exercise. I’d eat only half my meal, but take 5-6 bites of everyone else’s and not “count” it. I’d walk around shopping and say that was exercise, etc. I’d punish myself with bizarre “rules,” then go nuts and eat everything in sight. My food issues are probably different than yours, but anyone who struggles with weight has their own demons. Just be honest about where it’s hard for you and try to find creative ways to change those traps you set for yourself.

For me, I love exercise, but also LOVE to eat! Diet is always the hardest part. When losing the weight, I genuinely hit the gym 5-7 days a week with cardio/weights/yoga and kept a strict low fat, reduced calorie no alcohol diet 6 days a week and ate/drank whatever I wanted the 7th. Maintenance eased up on both those behaviors. Now I’m training for a marathon and need to step it up again.

That may not be your cup of tea, but just find something that pushes you to succeed without pushing you to self-destruct. It can happen- go for healthy, not thin- you’ve already got gorgeous!

Yay for 16 paper clips!! I’m on 12 paper clips! :-) My tips:
1. When you’re hungry, eat.
2. When you’re thirsty, drink water.
3. When you eat, devote yourself to ONLY eating. Don’t combine eating with any other activity like watching tv.
4. Chew your food. Taste your food.
5. Make eating a ritual. Set the table, eat off the good china. Don’t just grab McDonalds!!
6. Cook your own food.
7. When you’re full, stop eating. (This is way easier said than done!! I feel compelled to clean my plate, and I know I shouldn’t!!)

At restaurants:
1. Order a to-go box with your food. When your food comes, immediately put half of it in the box to take home.
2. If it says “the works” it has too many calories.
3. Yes it IS ok to order a diet soda with your cheeseburger! Just because one thing you order is high calorie doesn’t make you obligated to order the regular soda and the fudge desert. :-)

Thanks for sharing this with us! I always feel motivated when I read your posts. Mr. S and I are considering moving up our date from 2010 to 2009, so now that I may possibly have less than 7 months to lose the 40 pounds I wanted to lose, I’m starting to really freak out!

I attend workout classes at 24 hour fitness. The 3 way mirrors and 20 exercising women around me make me less lazy!

Don’t underestimate the weight that will come off as a result of your pre-wedding stress in the weeks before the wedding. It can actually be quite shocking how quickly it drops. In the meantime, give yourself endless credit for planning a wedding and maintaining a weight loss plan!!
