Bridesmaid Dress Freakout

February 23rd, 2009 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Apple Cider

I am having a bridesmaid dress freak out. I want a dress to just speak to me and that just fits with everything. But so far, nothing has done that.

I am contemplating picking a color and letting the girls find a dress in similar shades. I love weddings that have similar shades of dresses. Check out these three weddings. The girls all have different dresses and they look so great!

I am starting to feel the pressure to make a decision, but really want to find the right fit! Some of my girls have expressed that having the same dress helps them to stand out and “feel more special”. I agree that having one dress makes you feel “special”, but I also want everything to look a certain way. AHHHH! (That is me screaming.)

So what am I looking for?

  • Either dark/deep purple, dark/deep pink, or gold
  • Short or long
  • Rustic yet elegant
  • Feel slightly vintage or super modern but not traditional and not typical

Do I sound like “bridezilla”??!! I am afraid I do! :)

Here are four dresses that I love that fit my criteria:

This dress speaks to me but it is grey and sold out. :( The price is only $74.99. If it weren’t sold out I think I would change my entire scheme and get this one.

HELP, HELP, HELP! Which dresses do you like? What do you think? Do you know any that you think I would love? Please share!

The grey one is lovely. But, I guess my first question is what body types you’re looking to dress — that makes a world of a difference, and could possibly help you narrow down your faves!

I think the third or fourth ones down fit your descriptions — and both are cute and totally rewearable!

An etsy seller custom makes dresses like your last one for bridesmaids!

I’m considering wearing it for my rehearsal dinner because I love the design so much, but I hope this is useful!

If you’re worried about your bridesmaids standing out, you can always pick one color from X designer (or X fabric) and let the BMs choose their style. The look will be cohesive yet they will all still feel part of the wedding party. I think the short vs. long decision should be made according to the formality/time of your wedding. I am having an evening wedding in November at a cathedral/museum, so I’m using long dresses.

Ooo, that Vera Wang dress is to DIE for! Personally, I love the look of all different dresses- I’m doing that with my bridesmaids.

If your girls are worried about not looking “special”, maybe give them hairpieces that are all the same. That would be a way to differentiate them, but still get the look you’re going for.

I actually LOVE the idea of tonal dresses. I really wanted to go that route, but J was adamant that he did not like the idea. So, we went with all the same color in different JCrew dresses. There was concern about fit for my BM’s, so it was easier to have them decide which one they preferred instead of squeezing them all into the same thing. The purple is gorgeous, but I do love the gray dress. Too bad it’s sold out! I would have bought it for myself!

I feel your pain Miss Apple Cider!!! Picking out BM dresses and colours has been BY FAR the most stressful aspect of wedding planning thus far. I change my mind on daily basis on what I want.

That being said, I love dress #3 in the photos above, it’s very chic and definately not typical. I think that’s what I love about all the dresses in the photos you posted of real weddings, all the dresses are very current and don’t scream BRIDESMAID!! Good luck and keep us posted on how you make out!!

if all of your girls look great in the same dress i really like the idea of having the same dress in different shades (the ranges or pinks/purples would be gorgeous)
but if your girls are all different shapes i highly recommend picking a mfr then maybe a fabric and/or color and having the girls each get a flattering style in that
either way it will all come together even if someone shows up in polkadots

With so many manufactureres offering the same colors in multiple styles I really think that is the smart way to go!! gives the girls a chance to show thier style and allows continuity in the wedding.

I don’t know if you have a set or strict budget, but you might want to try Bella
Bridesmaids. I think the collections can be a pit pricey, boo, but they have several collections. I like the Anna Elyse Collection. They have so many choices for customizing dress styles and colors to fit each bridesmaid.

I love the look of each maid’s personality shining through, like the first few pics. Why not choose a swatch “range” that you like — send it to the girls, and ask them to try to stick close to the range. I think you’ll be amazed at the beautiful dresses they choose (and they WILL wear them again), and you’ll alleviate a TON of stress that you’re putting in yourself.

We’re going with different colored deep purple dresses for my bridesmaids, and they’ve all found dresses from retail stores. They don’t match in color or fabric, and a couple of them are more of a medium purple than a deep purple. But being matchy wasn’t a priority for any of them or for us. And, I love the fact that their dresses match their personalities, which are so different. From what I can tell from putting their individual pictures in their dresses together, the look will be exactly what we’re going for.
I doubt any of their dresses are what you’re going for, but here is the one that I think would be most universally flattering, and kind of rustic, though maybe not what I’d usually call elegant… (and it is a slightly different color in person).

I’m having all my bridesmaids in different shades of green - any dress of their choosing. My only request was that it be around knee length. I love the idea of them all looking similar, but being able to still be themselves in a dress they pick out. I gave them ideas (pictures of dresses I liked) and let them choose their own dress. I offered to go shopping for dresses with each of them. And of course, I have “veto” power, but all my maids have great taste and I trust them. I’m not worried!

Ha! I love the grey dress best. We’re doing grey BM dresses and every time I find a style I like, it never comes in grey. Dessy, are you reading this? :-) I would like to do 3 different styles for my 3 BMs (one is 5′10″ and skinny, the 2nd is 5″9″ and will be ~8 months pregnant, and the 3rd is 5′1″) but they WANT to wear the same dress. We’ll see…. GL with your search. And I agree with pp, look at the elements of your wedding to decide whether to do short or long.

I love love love those cute group pictures! I would recommend picking one color (purples, pinks or golds - probably not all three), and have your ‘maids choose their own dresses.

Above all, remember - it’s your wedding. Choose what YOU want, not your ‘maids. I really really wanted black bridesmaids dresses, and i let my mom and ‘maids talk me into going the chocolate brown route instead - our wedding was lovely, and lots of fun, but deep down I still wish I had gone with what *I* wanted.

The last one is similar to a dress on http://www.simpledress.com. The dress is called “Aster.”

I myself am in love with this dress from Nordstrom.

Except I have no real occasion to wear it to. I think it matches your criteria too.
