Cupcake Fever

February 23rd, 2009 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Piglet

Yeeeup, another cupcake bride. In order to avoid the per person cake cutting fee, we opted for wedding cuppity cakes. We’re going with a tiffany blue-ish/canary theme for our wedding, and cannot decide between the two for our cupcakes. I’m not a huge fan of frosting, so all of the inspirational cupcake photos were selected for that reason. Each of the designs would be customized to our liking of course, but you get the picture. Depending on price, we may ditch the floral top pieces, and sprinkle orchids throughout the cupcake tower.

Oh, they’re all great. Any chance you can you do both #2 and #3? A little mix and match with the colors?

@msBlossom: The pictures are actually from a vendor in Australia. I found their pictures on flickr after endless hours of searching for inspirational photos. I am cupcake’d out! They ARE pretty though. I’m deciding between Cake Lava and Tiers of Joy in Hawaii.

@missomally: I love the idea of offering two kinds. My only hesitation is price. I’ll see what my prospective vendors come back with!

@professorbee: I LOVE the rainbow in #1! It screams Hawaii to me.

I totally agree with you Miss Piglet and professorbee, the rainbow just screams Hawaii and I love the blue in it, so bright and cheery. You could always ditch the rose for an orchid or just no flower.

I voted for #3 - but only if you can do the flowers with it … if you decide not to do the flowers, then #1 is my choice for sure!

We are also doing cupcakes and I’m planning on doing them myself. I really like these ideas - right now I’m going to have the rossett of frosting with a little somethign stuck in it - Nothing fancy or anything - I think the simple top with just the letter in it would be very nice and then just put the flowers around on the stand.
It’s a total crime that they can charge you a per person cake cutting fee maybe they will stop once we all wise up and go to cupcakes!!

Love the cupcakes - in particular number 3. Do they taste as good as they look?

I’ve been through your same process and I have to ask you a question. Are you ok with fondant? All those pretty pictures are fondant cupcakes… and I’ll be honest, I don’t like the stuff that much!

So if you are ok with it, then those cupcakes are great, but if not then the bottom picture of the pink cupcakes with buttercream are the way to go!

@doctorgirl: yikes. great point and quite frankly, hadn’t even considered that factor. we had a fondant engagement cake, and while pleasing to my palette, i didn’t hear too much from others. I’ll check with the family on their opinion. thanks so much doctorgirl! always very helpful.

Hey, they are all gorgeous, I would just recommend a couple things:

1) make sure you want fondant
2) confirm that your venue will still not charge you a per person fee even if you go with cupcakes. Ours was called a “cutting fee” but when it came down to it, it was a per person dessert fee so it still applied to cupcakes.

I have never seen cupcakes before with the fondant tops. You may have just opened up a whole new world for me!!!! :)
But my personal favorite was number 4.

I love #3 the best. But if you are going to ditch the flowers, then I would pick #4 because I think you need SOMETHING to add a little ooomf! :) They are all so pretty!

Which one do you like the best?

I agree with doctorgirl. I’ve never met anyone who actually preferred the taste of fondant, but those are super cute I have to say!!!You can definitely do a lot more with fondant than icing for sure, but if you want the rainbow in #1, that could easily be done in frosting. Just an alternative idea (I did vote for #4, but in frosting I think #1 would work better). Can’t wait to see the outcome

To add to doctorgirl’s point, in addition to not being as well-liked by most, fondant is also much more expensive than buttercream. I know you said you don’t like frosting, so what if you get a small fondant cake that you and Mr. Pig can cut (and that’s the only bite you have to eat - or you can cut a whole slice for yourself if you want to, because, hey, it’s your wedding!) and then get buttercream in both colors for the cupcakes that the guests will eat? You can even get the same flavor cupcake, just have them put two different food colorings in the frosting - if you go with a white/light colored buttercream-type frosting flavor, that shouldn’t be a problem at all!

thank you thank you thank you. our engagement party was such a blur, i couldn’t remember what the heck we did with the cake. apparently, they peeled the fondant off the cake before serving. i sent a note to our baker with some of your recommendations. thanks so much, gals! weddingbee seriously rocks!
