Makeup Trial, Part Dos

February 23rd, 2009 @ 9:28 am by Mrs. Cheese

So after the last makeup trial, I decided to go back to MAC again, this time requesting eyeshadows with not a chance of red pigment in them. According to the woman at Aveda, many women have reactions to red pigments, so staying away from purple or reddish browns might help my itchy lids situation.

Again, no before pictures. Trust me, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to gasp and point and laugh when you see these. Note: when you go in for a makeup trial, WEAR WHITE! I know, duh, right? First I wore hot pink, then I wore blue… as Meatball would say, “No bueno.”

Meh. Not bad, not great. Cheeks are a little, “Hi, how are ya?” Eyes are slightly, “Helloooo there.” Oh, yea, and that pimple on my chin says, “AREN’T YOU OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW NOT TO PICK AT YOUR FACE?” (The answer is obvious, no?)

Then there’s this angle. Um, no. Aside from the fact that I smile crookedly when I’m faking it, it’s just… no. Gray eyeshadow reads blue on my skin and it’s a little too 80’s for me.

So, dear friends, we went from not dramatic enough to overly done. Bummer.

Funny story: we had a crazy day on Sunday night when our older dog ingested a horrible and unknown substance that almost killed him. (This’ll get funny in a second, hold tight.) He stayed overnight at the wonderful University of Tennessee teaching hospital’s intensive care unit. By Monday morning I knew that he’d recovered completely (yay!) so I was killing time before I could pick him up and decided to keep my MAC appointment. Anyhoo, things were nutty around our house after work that day. I was running around getting Beau reintegrated (for some reason every animal who leaves has to deal with being sniffed up and down by every other animal upon their return, cats included) and the mister was doing everything else.

My guy suddenly remembers that he hasn’t kissed me hello, and moves toward me all puckered up, then stops. “Whoa!” he exclaims, all concerned and worried. “What happened to your eye?” Note: not eyeS, eye. He thought it was a bruise! I explain that I’ve had my makeup done and that this is a “classic smoky eye look,” expecting him to reconsider his reaction.

“I don’t like it,” he says. “You look bruised. Can you just look like you do every day?”

HAHAHAHA. Um, no. Sorry, buddy. It’s a sweet idea, but it ain’t happening! I work from home, remember, so it’s a special day if I bother to comb my hair, much less wear real makeup. Most days I use moisturizer, a bit of concealer and some blush. Let’s just say it’s not exactly camera-friendly.

So, it looks like I’ll be doing my own eye makeup; back to Aveda to purchase eye shadow. I will, however, be using the MAC foundation and setting it with a little powder. I bought the newest hydrating full coverage foundation and I really like it.

Will you be doing your own makeup? How have your trials (and tribulations?) gone?

I never thought to wear white either! I haven’t done a makeup trial yet…one more thing I keep putting off!

I haven’t had mine yet but will in about a week. I’m incredibly nervous, mostly because I don’t know how to explain what I want. I like to wear make-up and would love a more dramatic look on my wedding day, but sometimes feel like I look like a clown when I wear too much.

I did my own make-up (or rather, my sister and I did it). We did a “trial” at home a few days before. I’m just not a big makeup person, but I have a lot of experience applying it because I was in theatre for many years. So I knew what I ‘needed’ (eyeliner) and what I didn’t want (cakey foundation). I was really happy with how it looked- I looked like myself (my husband also didn’t want me to look like some mutant freak who didn’t resemble me), but it came out great in the photos. I used a tinted moisturizer (Clinique Almost Makeup) very sparingly, MAC eyeliner, drugstore mascara!, MAC cream blush, and clinique/MAC lipstuff. I think it can definitely be done!

Awww, it’s cute how make-up clueless your mister is. :-) Good luck with your make-up…I’m sure you’ll do much better than the pros did!

I don’t wear makeup at all, so I plan on doing tinted moisturizer for the couple of weeks before the wedding, and then doing light makeup cuz the Mr hates makeup

I usually did my own make-up for the weddings I’ve been in, but I’m not sure what I’m going to do for my wedding when it happens.

I’m planning on doing my own makeup, and probably my mom’s as well. I think you’re making a good decision with doing your own. The gray definitely looks blue in the photos, and I was left wondering what decade it was. You’re a gorgeous girl, and I think you can find the shades that are right for you better than the makeup artist.

Don’t plan on doing my makeup..and it’s hilarious he thought it was a bruise! It looks good, but I liked your other look.

Ever thought about not going to a makeup counter and trying an artist? They are used to knowing what’s best for print work and photo shoots. You can get them to teach you what to do and don’t have to have them on the day once you learn the tricks.

You look great! But I understand doing your own makeup. My SIL is doing mine because my hubby to be likes how my makeup looks on a daily basis.

I agree with you– that eyeshadow color is so 1983! You’re beautiful, you just have to find the right shade. Keep trying….

I’m with bellenga–is there a dept store brand you can wear..and just visit one of those counters for your wedding makeup? Good luck the third time around!

oops, two very different thoughts mixed in.

either try a different make up counter, or try an artist at a salon.

I’m a follower of ebeauty blog and get the best makeup tips from her. Youtube a couple of wedding makeup videos, buy drugstore makeup first that has a good return policy so you make sure the color fits and then upgrade later. I dont trust people to read whats going on in my head or what I really want so I’m learning how to do everything myself- hair included.

@Josalyn: OOh, brave. I don’t think I’ll do my hair, but like you, I generally have the exact picture I want in my head, and it’s so hard to communicate that!

After my first trial the boy told me I had “scary, scary eyes”…so I’ll have round two in a few weeks. I’m afraid that anything they do to my eyes will look scary since I never wear anything in the eye area other than clear mascara.

Also glad the pup is going better!

What is it with guys wanting us to do the “natural look” or what we do everyday?? My FI asked me about that! Do I wear a pouffy white dress everyday?? Hello! No…there will be makeup…

I think you would look amazing in warmer tones! Have you tried a smoky brown with a hint of bronze or gold? Dior has some great colors with great pigment so it will go on well and stay on through the night. I’m also a fan of bobbi brown. They’ve got colors that will go so well with your skin tone!

Ditto to what peonypink says, I think you would look fabulous in warm/golden tones that would compliment your beautiful skin and eyes. A bronze eye and champagne gloss with a hint of gold on the lips would be beautiful.

And no, I would never in a million years do my own makeup for my wedding, that’s leaving too much up to chance!!! I tend to have a shakey hand when I get excited….

I’m a fool for makeup, and also a fool about trying to put it on properly, so I will NOT be applying it myself.

However, I would suggest:

highlight the brow bones with an off-white to make them really look sculpted, and also use a dash of yellow-ish white on the very inside area of your eyes. It makes the white look whiter and really opens them up (two fab tips I got at MAC and use for special occasions).

I think the ’smokey” that extended too close to your nose is why the Mr. thought it was a bruise?! Too cute about his response!

Just remember to put on a lot…. When I look at my rehearsal dinner photos (in which I did my own makeup) I am horrified. But the wedding pics (in which my makeup was done for me and seemed too much) I looked great!

I’m pretty sure FH is going to have the same reaction to my make-up trail, so I feel your pain :)

if i were to do your makeup, i would suggest champagne, gold, and bronze on the eyes with a brown liquid liner (more dramatic than your regular day-to-day pencil liner, but the brown keeps it much more subtle than going with a black liquid liner) as well as NARS orgasm on the cheeks (seriously, this is the best blush out there!). i think you’re right, the gray is looking very 80’s blue, especially paired with that shade of blush and bluish-purple lip color you have on. i think going with more bronzed colors will help make you look like your normal, natural you sans makeup but make you look healthy and glowing through the photog’s lens. believe me, you can do a smokey look withOUT using grays and blacks!

Hmm…I have to say the color choice is off here. You’re looking a little my-little-pony with the pastels. A bronze for the cheeks would look much more natural. For the eyes, gold/brown or some kind of darker color like deep purple or green blended with gold tints.

Yeah, don’t always trust that the people at MAC will know what they’re doing. MAC’s standards for their employees have gone waaaaaayyy downhill in the past few years…(wow, don’t I sound like a jerk?)
You should DEFINITELY consider the brown/gold tones with a peachy blush and a gloss…I think that’d look fab on you!

Little hot piece of cheese… Meatball, does that make her melty cheese? ;)

You look great! I am going to either do it myself, or ask one of my bridesmaids to do it. :)

I did my own wedding makeup for my portraits and for my wedding day. I did my own hair for the portraits, but on the day of the wedding, I had someone else do it because I wanted to feel pampered. What a HUGE mistake. HUGE! She took two hours doing a simple updo that I did in 30 minutes. It was very upsetting.

Some tips about doing make up - Start with a good primer. If you have redness, use green concealer first. if you have dried, darker pimples, use yellow. After the primer and concealer, apply a breatheable liquid foundation (I find this holds the best) and then set it with some powder that matches your skin tone. I’m one of those fanatics that cannot stand it when a person’s skin appears whitish or purple against their natural skin tone. Finding a great foundation that matches is hard. Nars and Prescriptives are my favorite.

After the foundation is applied, put on your blush (this obviously comes before the setting with powder because setting the make up should be last). I’d recommend trying a cheek stain to make it last, but be careful!! Expert use and/or experience is required to use this well. Do not use taint’s cheek stain. It doesn’t actually stain. Get a straight up liquid and not a stick!

As for eyeshadow, I did a classic smokey eye using BLACK, PURPLE, and SLATE BLUE colors. Sounds like a weird color combo, but it works! I then applied eye liner with a pencil and traced over it with a waterproof liquid eye liner to make the line crisp. I used Ardell’s eyelashes (#109) last and then I used bronzer to shade my wide and round face. The bronzer I used is MAC’s Golden. Brush it lightly around the edges of your face and around your jawline carefully blending it.

Set your face with powder and put your face over a bit of steam *but not the burning kind… plug up the sink and turn on hot, hot water and put your face over it. It will help set the make up INTO your skin. Just do this really quickly. Then spray your face with Model in a Bottle (my secret for all day long make up with no touch ups).

The eye closed picture so you can see the combo: http://xa3.xanga.com/9ccf157573532215490556/b168495274.jpg

Eyes open and face head on (it’s cropped because I was showing my hair with extentions and without - Yes, I do my own hair extentions, too, so if you wanna learn, just email me): http://x03.xanga.com/eeac93e779430214354125/b167499214.jpg

Check my facebook for tons of pictures of my make up and how it lasts through the day. I didn’t reapply anything and did no touch ups all day. I swear by model in a bottle. Christine dot Le at gmail dot com

If you’re going for a classic look, that’s what i went for on my wedding day, then i think my make up suggestions should do the trick.

aw, the bees might be a little biased. they always think everybody looks lovely no matter what (Not that you don’t miss cheese, I swear!)

I also think (maybe because of your sweater) that your color palette would side towards the warms. Brown, gold, rose. That silver looks a lot like blue not bad but not wedding either.

I agree with others that say you would look better in warmer tones. The grey really does look blue.

Good tip for wearing white to the makeup trial though!!

I am still on the fence on whether or not I should do my own wedding makeup :/
