To Top it All Off…

February 23rd, 2009 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Taffy

The night before Valentine’s Day, Mr. Taffy and I started hunting for our cake topper. We love Ann Wood’s work, but we couldn’t fit those birds into our budget, even if she had cute canaries for sale. More than birds, we really wanted a vintage bride and groom, and found this one on ebay. It just came this weekend, and we are very happy with it! It’s not only cute, but a green and economical choice as well. ;) Here is the link, as the ebay seller had more than one topper for sale, along with an inexpensive “buy it now” option, so you don’t have to go through the bidding process.

The dress is huge and hilarious. It is so big, there’s a hole in the side that the groom fits through! Can you imagine if real wedding dresses had that feature? It’s like a groom trap! ;)

I have to admit, I am more than a little tempted to modify the skirt to look more like my dress. It would be easy and I have all of the materials on hand. (Yes, I have yardage of tulle and organza and lace trim somewhere in the house at all times. I knew my sewing obsession would come in handy at some point!) I will probably make a little skirt and see how it goes before I would ever alter the original. I would keep the veil the same. What do you think?

The topper will look super cute with our traditional cake, which will look even more “vintage” with three tiers and butter cream frosting. ;)

from In Style Weddings Spring 2008 issue

For now, I’ve put the topper on our mantle with all of our valentines. :)

If I do decide to modify the skirt to look like my dress, I will have to put the topper in hiding so Mr. Taffy won’t get any clues. ;)

Did you use a vintage cake topper, or did you fall in love with a new one?

we didn’t use a cake topper, we rested two Schwartz calla lilies on top, but we did have the same cake. i fell in love with that cake design from instyle. my baker said it was one of the easiest cakes to decorate with the highest ooooh, aaaahhh factor she’s ever made. i applaud your taste!
p.s. looooove the cake topper. i couldn’t find one i liked and i was not going to use the precious moments one my aunt offered.

We aren’t having a cake, but I desperately wanted to do a cake topper, so we’re having ours stand on the top of the cupcake tower.

Why did I care so much about a cake topper when we’re eschewing so many other traditions? Because how many opportunities do you get to use Dalek and Cybermen action figures from Doctor Who in your wedding? My Dalek is getting a hair flower and necklace which I am making and if you know anything about Doctor Who, you know how amusing this is. I think the cake toppers are a place where you can have a lot of fun.

I think I’m actually using my grandparents cake topper, which is similar to yours. My mom thinks it’s weird that I would want to use it, but I really like the vintage look and I think it’s a nice way to have something of theirs at the wedding since they are both deceased. I really do like the vintage toppers though, and I agree that the puffy skirt is hilarious!

I’m contemplating using the topper that my parents had on their cake in 1956. My mom has told me that I can use it if I want, so I think I may do so secretly so that it will be a surprise to them on our wedding day!

We haven’t even broached the subject yet! I was thinking we may use something island themed. I love your choice, and definitely think it would be a sweet touch to modify the skirt to mirror yours. Fun!

How rediculous CUTE!! Love it! I, too, loved the birds but couldn’t justify the cost…and then had a lot of people asking me when I showed them pictures of what I wanted - “Really? Birds?? I don’t get it.” Ha.

Love your vintage find!

I like the idea of a topper, but we haven’t been able to find anything we like (that doesn’t break the budget).

I love the groom hole! The topper is actually pretty cute. I really like the vintage figurines over the one’s Wilton and others sell today.

LOVE your cake topper. I think they’re a great way to show a little of your personality and whimsy. Groom trap..ha!

We fell in love with a new one, and it’s perfect for us. It actually even looks like us. There’s even a little flag that says “just married”. It’s from REI, you know, the place that just screams wedding cake toppers ;)

I can’t wait to get our cake topper (minies of us with our dog and cat) but we won’t be able to see it til the wedding day, since we won’t see what each other is wearing til that day anyway. :(

Your cake is adorable!
We’re using Amy & Kiff from Futurama for our topper. It’s not the norm, but neither are we so it fits! :)
LOVE the groom trap! I think the topper is great as it is, but I think making it look like your dress will add some extra AWW to it!

Yeah, I definitely agree that you should alter the dress to look like yours. It would just the extra touch of personality, and you can put the cake topper somewhere special in your house afterwards. That way, instead of pulling your dress out every other day to remember what a wonderful wedding you had, you can just look at your little cake topper! :)
Me and the FI are more modern. I think we might just go with the ever popular initials. I like they way they look, and I could totally see me hanging them on a wall somewhere in my house.

I think we’re just being boring and using flowers.

Just FYI - my mom did wedding cakes in the 70’s & 80’s using toppers similiar to the one you purchased and she always made new skirts for them. Mostly b/c she didn’t like not being able to fully wash it between uses (many brides just wanted to borrow one of her toppers)…and they ALWAYS included the “groom trap” ;)

hahaha the skirt is awesome =) I didn’t think about toppers but did ask our wedding cake designer and said with our outlook no cake topper would be best. Instead I’m getting cute grooms cake!

We’re not doing a cake topper, but I LOVE that vintage topper! I think it would be totally cute if you modified it to look like your dress. Go for it!

@chemchopity: That’s awesome! I love it because it is so traditional, but very graphic and whimsical at the same time. :)

@MegK: That’s so fun! I agree, you can definitely get creative when it comes to the cake topper.

@Sunflowers13: @Strawberry Gal: I wish I had a vintage topper from my family, but my parents used flowers on the top of their cake.

@Miss Piglet: @grumpybear722: @kabuckenroth: @ggsb: @MightySapphire: @Miss Spring Roll: @tessabella76: @Lillindy: @AliCherri1: I am so excited to start working on the skirt! I went to the fabric store yesterday to get some ribbon and found some lace trim that is a really small scale, better than the larger trims I have around the house. I also got a teeny blue ribbon to put as the sash. I can’t wait to get started! :)

@ready2bmrsd: @linzella: Your toppers are adorable!

@Grnmel: That is so fun and unique! I’ll have to show that to Mr. Taffy. :)

@bellenga: @kabuckenroth: I do love that you can reuse the initials! :)

aww this is so cute. I would love to find a bride and groom topper for our cake. We are having the hardest time finding one with a bride that has brown hair and a groom that has blonde hair. I think personalizing the skirt is a great idea!!

@doublemint921: I know what you mean! Mr. Taffy is blonde, and we could not find a brunette bride with a blonde groom. We couldn’t even find a blonde groom at all! (I would have painted the bride’s hair darker) So we did kind of settle, but because the tux is so similar to what Mr. T will be wearing, we think it’s ok.

I am a little late this this one, but I really wanted a vintage topper. I looked around online and then I thought to myself, why not use a relatives. So, I called my relatives to no avail. Then I called my future mother in law and she said that she didn’t have one, but she believed her parents had one. We are now the proud owners of a 1940s cake topper. Unfortunately my mother in laws father died in October. It is really nice that we are going to have a piece of his wedding day at ours.
