About Mrs. Lemonade

EnLIGHTenment

February 24th, 2009 @ 5:26 pm by Mrs. Lemonade

Mr. L and I headed home to SA once again this past weekend. The mission for this trip: to finalize lighting decisions. Surprisingly, Mr. L has been very involved in the design and decision making for our event lighting.

We arrived at Oak Hills around 1PM to meet with the onsite coordinator. It was so bizarre walking through the stately doors into the (usually conservatively decorated) lobby. It was mass pandemonium everywhere as dozens of workers were setting up various pieces of décor for a Mardi Gras themed event to be held that evening. There were beads and feathers EVERYWHERE and the place was covered in purple, green, and gold fabric, heavy on the lame’. Wow. I only wish I had thought to take pictures for y’all – it was so incredibly over the top!

Anyhow, we moved into the ballroom with the events coordinator and immediately got to work discussing ceiling tiles, extension cords, and inconspicuous plugs – snooze. I found this portion of the day incredibly boring, but Mr. L seemed to be loving all the handyman talk as he diligently took notes to report back to our lighting company. I attempted to envision our setup since we don’t make tons of trips to the Club. Unforch, with the festive and bright décor I was having a really hard time picturing our understated ivory and gold touches. Oh well.

Once Mr. L had finished discussing logistics, we moved on to discussing the actual lighting elements themselves. Ahh, then I felt as thought I had something to contribute! After a bit of hemming and hawing and indecisiveness on my part, we think we have our decisions made. Hooray!

Our lighting company will be bringing in various sized natural paper lanterns to hang at varying heights throughout the ballroom (and in the trees for the ceremony - yay!). They will also be bringing in 6-8 up lights with navy blue gels to tie in the navy color and add a bit more drama to the room. Additionally, they are going to place a waterproof blue up light in the fountain in front of the club where the guests enter, and I plan on having our rock star florist, Erin, sprinkle a few ivory petals in the water – drama, loves it! :) Lastly on the lighting front, we are going to have a custom monogrammed gobo shining navy blue onto our white (!) dance floor. All in all, I’m pretty excited about how it’s all coming together. Only 53 days out – gah!

While these aren’t the exact looks we’re going for, here are a few pics of how awesome event lighting can really transform a space:

Oooo, a ton. Our space — a modern art gallery is mostly white marble, so it totally needs our orange uplighting and purple floor and ceiling wash! :-)

Our reception will be a seaside, sunset, terraced dinner party….lighting is a bit part of it, but it will mostly be courtesy of paper and glass jar lanterns and the gorg ocean sunset skyline.

Wow lighting adds so much. I don’t think it is our budget, but I’m still loving all these pictures!

That second pic is fab. We’re not really adding any additional lighting, bummer.

My venue doesn’t need it so we aren’t having it, but oh how I wants it!! We are going to budget that money towards some lounge furniture instead.

Thanks for these pics — I’ll definitely show the purple one to our lighting folks!

I really want lighting too. It probably adds more bang for the buck then flowers in bigger venues. I love the idea of paper lanterns as a cheap alternative to renting out expensive lighting.

diy lighting is very important to our wedding even more than the flowers, i am going to minimize any floral expenses by simply not using any for centerpieces and decorations and focus on the lighting. i want a very dimmed romantic vibe.

my photographers also include lighting in their package, so that will help.

i just hope my historic inn lets us have the freedom i am looking for.

I love the photos, can’t wait to see the results! :) We are not doing any kind of lighting, not even candles. I didn’t realize it until I read you post. eep!

we are using natural light and candles on the tables along with some paper lanterns in hopes of avoiding the wall sconces at the venue but there is no plan and no lighting company.

Wow, I don’t think I ever thought about how we’re going to do lighting. I just plan on having loads of candles and having lanterns on the patio area that is right off the banquet hall. Now I’ve got some ideas cooking!

Gorgeous pics and I’m so jealous that you’re getting paper lanterns! Can’t wait to see them. Our venue has an optional lighting package but we haven’t decided yet. It makes a world of a difference though!

Those second and fifth inspiration pics are amazing! It sounds like your lighting is going to be really beautiful. I hope we can find room in our budget for a little creative lighting! :)

Like driftslikesmoke, i love the second and fifth photos. They give a really lovely intimate atmosphere i think. Unfortunately we don’t have room for the lighting in our budget, so i’m relying on candlelight hopefully!

A lot! We’re going to have colorful candles everywhere (more candles than flowers) to set the right romantic mood. It’s a small reception so it’ll work.

So fun! It’s amazing how much lighting can really add to an event design. Can’t wait to see the final pictures during your recap!
