Kusudama: Ceremony Decorations

February 24th, 2009 @ 12:50 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Source: Paper Unlimited

Ever since I was a small kid I’ve liked doing origami. I can’t say I’m great, but I can certainly fold a thing or two. I’m going to be integrating origami into our escort cards (I’m hoping to finally be able to blog that soon, it’s been a bit of an nightmare!), but I think there are a lot of other places we can integrate some of my origami skills.

I think that this Kusudama ball is absolutely gorgeous. How cute would it be to find a cool patterned origami paper (or even just plain white, for simplicity) and make up a bunch of these, secure a ribbon in the center of each ball, and then attach them to the end of the pews for the ceremony? Since we don’t have any money in our budget to decorate our church, I think this would be such a fun way to add an interesting element to things.

And, the best thing? It doesn’t take much origami knowledge at all to make these flowers, it really only takes time, which means I can recruit helpers when the time comes! Check out these easy instructions to make your own. This is totally what I’m going to be doing this weekend as I’m holed up, trying to survive whatever awful weather is thrown at us next!

How pretty! I love origami… can’t wait to see your escort cards. the kudusama balls would be great as pew decorations– would you reuse them after the ceremony, too? Mrs. penguin hung up her tissue pomanders at home and they look fab.

@TandM:
They can totally be reused for other things. I just made up a couple recently to integrate into a banner I was making for a baby shower at work, so fun!

AND you put so much work into these things, it’s a pity to toss them after the day :)

They would look great in white — or could be another way to feature your wedding colors!

I made kusudama flower ornaments for Christmas this year, and they were a huge hit. I spent hours working on them, but they were well worth it. I used scrap paper and cut them to size. To add color without spending money on origami paper, I colored the edges with a marker. These would be great for ceremony decorations!

Great ideas!

And the funny thing is, they’re really time consuming, but SO easy :)

I love these! I made one a few months ago and it turned out so cool!

Just a note: The instructions make it sound like you can use any glue to make the petals/flowers. I found that with regular white glue I was sitting there for 10 minutes per petal trying to get them to stay together! I ended up bring out my trusty hot glue gun and it worked like a charm!

@princessa_2004:
Really? I’ve actually done well with just regular craft glue! I have bamboo skewers that were leftover from something and use those to spread the glue on, worked like a charm for me!

@Miss Stiletto: Maybe it was just the paper I was using? It refused to stick together!

@princessa_2004:
I’ve struggled if I’ve used paper other than origami. Origami paper is incredibly lightweight so it works perfectly for this. If I was using anything else, I’d probably go with something a little bit tougher, as you did :)

I *love* these! We were looking at tissue pom pom things for the decorations at the reception, but I just wasn’t loving them. These are the perfect alternative! I love origami too, so I don’t mind taking the time to do them, and they’re gorgeous! Thanks! ^_^

Question, how critical is it that the squares be perfect? I have access to a paper cutter so I could get that part done really quickly if I just bought larger sheets and cut them, but it’s not completely perfect. Do you think that’d matter?

@Liz.smith:
You really do want to be working with perfect squares if at all possible. Otherwise, your folds won’t be perfect and you’ll notice that the tips of your petals don’t quite line up…and well, that may not both you! It just bothers me :)

I suggest making a couple of petals with pieces you’ve cut yourself, versus pieces that were already perfect squares, and seeing what difference it makes. That ultimately will help you decide if you’re happy with the look you end up wtih!

I made these as christmas decorations for my house this year. I dipped the edges in silver glitter. They came out really cute. They take hours to make but it is def worth it.

I love love these!! If you do have room in your budget to decorate at the church I would definetly add these to your pews. Its a great way of adding decor but also having a personal touch!!

I’m using these as pew markers as well! My grandmother (who taught me origami and wanted to help out in some way) will be folding all of the flowers for me.

We’re also going to reuse them as decorations for the cocktail tables, place card table, guest book table, etc.
