Mrs. Hot Cocoa's Picture
Mrs. Hot Cocoa, Boston/Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 31, JD/PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Medical Student Engagement Date: May 30, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: April, 2008 Venue: Ritz Carlton, Marina Del Rey About Me: I am a professional student by day and an amateur cupcake taster, bargain shopper, and wedding planner by night. I am obsessed with NPR, the Food Network, paper, dance shows, Anthropologie, post-structuralist theory, Weddingbee!, "The Office," and celebrity gossip. When not procrastinating from my dissertation, I spend time catering to Jellyby, our overly anxious shih tzu, and getting to know Mr. Hot Cocoa. We have only been dating for fifteen years, so it's like I'm in love with a stranger! From the East Coast, we are planning a Jewish-Chinese Extravaganza in L.A., where we both grew up.
About Mrs. Hot Cocoa
For Valentine’s Day, I gave Mr. HC a Blurb book, entitled The Hot Cocoas: The First Fifteen Years. But lest you get the misimpression that I’m such the loving fiancee, devoting endless hours to doing romantic gestures for Mr. HC, I should tell you that the book is actually our guestbook. (I’m all about 2-for-1 deals.)

I scanned in ephemera from our relationship, including notes we wrote to each other in high school — my favorite is the one Mr. HC wrote in calculus class, which includes a “Graph of Missing You Versus Time”, followed by a derivative of that graph. Young love between nerds . . . there really isn’t anything as embarrassing.

And no retrospective of our relationship would be complete without our prom photos.

Interspersed throughout the book are Leigh Miller’s fabulous photos from our engagement shoot.

Over all, I was really pleased with Blurb’s quality. I chose the large format landscape size, which is 13 x 11 inches. The cover is the hardcover with imagewrap, and the paper is their premium paper. The whole thing came out to around $65 — a pretty good deal given the end product.
How will you personalize your guest book?

I just made a Shutterfly book of our engagement pictures — but probably won’t use it as a guest book.

I commend you for being confident enough to include photos and items from high school! I would never let my wedding guests get that close to a dorky Miss and Mr. MagPie!

I’m making a photobook too! But I’m not using Blurb. We’re planning to use Shutterfly. Maybe I should use Blurb?

I love how you included ephemera and photos in tribute to your nerd love days.

@MagPie518: LOL. “Confident” is not the word I’d use. But there’s no hiding our dorkiness; many of our guests have known us since high school!

@MissStellar: I definitely like the professional quality of Blurb. I’ve used both Shutterfly and Blurb, and Blurb feels more like a “real” book.

Wow, I really love this idea! I met my fiance in high school as well. However we were just friends who fell out of touch until the end of college.

Your book looks absolutely adorable!

That is so cute! I want to do the same thing and have been stealthily working with FI’s sister to collect photos of him through the ages.

Miss HC, is the paper in your blurb book smooth or textured? I think the smooth paper looks better, but I’m concerned that pen will smear on it so I’m not sure what to do…..

I love it! I think it’s great you put in more than photos and included notes, etc.

How many pages did it end up being? (15 years!!)

So jealous of all your photo memories, I wish FH and I had that many photos… well, you’ve also known Mr HCC much longer. LOVE the book! Great double duty idea :)

@LatteLove: It ended up being 40 pages, but if I had to do it all over again, I’d have spread out the photos and increased the pages; it looks thin, and there’s not that much room to sign.

ok… So this is the most beautiful thing that i have seen… I wanted to give Mr. WW a book of everything, every note, and a several of our favorite pictures as a part of his wedding gift, but I never thought to make it the guest book…

Unfortunately, I am unable to do this because a very close, very single girlfriend of mine decided (when she was helping me unpack) that “I saved too many useless notes.” I was devastated when I found notes in the trash because I save everything from my honey… Needless to say, all of my notes weren’t recovered and I am not sure what to do…

What a cute idea…. This is my fave!

The derivative of a Missing You vs. Time trend….laughing so very hard right now!!! (With you, not at you!) What were the limits???

…So you scanned in the ephemera? Then guests will write in this book during the wedding? Cute!

You just inspired me. So one could conceivably take pictures of the guests, have them write schtuff on a note card and then scan the cards into Blurb and add all the picturs to create a sort of guest book after the fact….

@Futuremrsfarland: The pages are smooth, so I’m also concerned about smudging. Angel Swanson (our wedding coordinator) recommended Sakura Micron pens (from Paper Source); they are archival quality, non-acidic. Probably not smudge-proof, but we’ll see.

@preppydoc: Oh no! I can’t believe she purged your love notes! If you manage to rescue some of them, I think Miss Taffy also posted about her ingenious idea for binding love notes a while back. Otherwise, you can also do the Blurb book idea — just a few will give your guests something to aww about.

@Miss Perfume: Yes, that’s a brilliant idea — and a good alternative to the Polaroid guest book. I should say though that it took a long time to scan the stuff in, but if you had an industrial scanner, that might not be as difficult.

Love the graphs from Calc Class. Too cute. I’m making an old fashioned style scrapbook (with actual pictures and my own page decor) for our guest book. Each page has two pictures on it - all the people who will be at the wedding. Guests will be ask to find their picture and leave us some words of wisdom or advice next to their picture. Our picture is inserted into a little window on the front.

Uh, dorky extrodinairre! I love it… but, could he do the integral of “missing you vs time”?

Great way to make all this stuff present in your modern life!

@NiceWedding: I love that idea, and I know your guests will be so touched to be included in this way.

@doctorgirl: Hahaha. I wouldn’t put it past him . . . .
