Luckily, I'm 90% resourceful, creative optimist (and kooky, neurotic practicalist-if-that's-a-word for the other ten). About Mrs. Sea Breeze

Ah yes, the vows.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted Mr Breezy and I to say our vows to each other in our own words. (Mr Breezy wanted it too - he just didn’t know it.)

So you’d think a year would be enough time to think about it, right? I mean, I don’t know about you, but I’d seen plenty of wedding movies where the bride and groom were hastily writing their vows moments before the ceremony and I couldn’t help going, “Pffffffttttt!!!!!!!! COME ON, people. What, this day happened as a complete surprise to you, hence you couldn’t prepare? How pathetic!”

Well, guess what we were doing the night before?

Although we have our reasons for it, which will become a funny memory one day, it taught me something very important: you are ready when you are ready. And when it comes to your wedding vows, in the end, it’s not ‘when’ that matters, but ‘what’.

1

I went first and did a pretty good job at remembering what I had practiced that morning (in the shower… where I alternately said my vows, hummed “Going to the Chapel” and cried… joyfully, of course).

2

The groomsmen are touched but they’re hiding it with their smiles. At least, that’s my theory.

3

4

Of course, my emotions got the better of me and I started to waver (along with the female contingent of our wedding guests and a few males too, I’m told).

5

But Mr Breezy, in true Breezy fashion, cracked a joke to make it all better.

6

7

Then, it was his turn.

8

And omigosh, it was so funny we all almost totally lost it.

9

But there was also a sentimental side to it too. Aw Mr Breezy, you can’t fool me, you big ball of mush.

10

11

Once we had said our own personal words, Brian guided us through the “traditional” do-you-take-this-woman/man vows.

That is, as “traditional” as it gets with the Breezys. This is just another one of many funny moments.

I Do from Mrs Sea Breeze on Vimeo.

Then it was time for the rings. Here’s the one and only shot I have of the DIY shell ring holder I made. It’s filled with sand from the beach just a few steps away.

12

13

As Mr Breezy grasped my band I realized, “Oh crap!! I forgot to take off my engagement ring!” Oh well, no biggie. I just took it off right then and there.

14

I just love that our photogs caught that moment. It was so real. See? Weddings aren’t perfect! And no one noticed or cared anyway.

15

I didn’t have time to turn around and hand my e-ring off to my girls and it doesn’t fit on any other finger, but I shoved it on halfway, anyway. It was either that, or stuff it down the front of my dress. (Can you spot it?)

16

Et voila. We’d vowed to be each other’s forevermore. Well, almost. Just one more laugh to seal the deal, mmm?

17

Are you planning on saying your own vows during your ceremony? If you did say your own, were you prepared well in advance or did the words not come to you until the day before?

Photos by the lovely Photophil Steingard and his sidekick, Michael Steingard. Videotaping by our wonderful friends Todd and Dave.

Love the e-ring moment. Mine doesn’t fit on my right ring finger either!

Also, your dress looks AMAZING in the first picture!

And your day-of shower confession is so cute!

We wrote our own, but they are still being fed to us/recited with our officiant because they’re in the format of traditional vows. We wanted it to be in our own words, but we wanted to preserve the vowiness of it all.

We wrote our own vows. Mine were done maybe a couple of days before; there are pics of DH writing his *just* before the ceremony. Both were wonderful. Also, I think waiting until just before is fine — it’s in those last few days/moments that it all really hits you.

We are planning to write our own vows, and hopefully memorize them as well. However, we are talking about writing them collaboratively, so they will be the same/very similar, but we will have worked on them as a team.

I also just wanted to take the opportunity to tell you I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog posts (and your dress was beautiful).

I know I’ve said it fifty times before, but I LOVE your recaps and I hope they never end :)

We wrote our vows and I was supposed to memorize them ahead of time. Um, yeah right.
One of the funniest parts of our ceremony is when I turned to my MOH and she handed me my cue card. My husband about died laughing at me. But I knew I couldn’t remember it all during the moment…I was way too emotional!

I want to write my own vows but I’m terrified that I will sound cliche and silly. My FI has a great bilingual repertoir and he writes the sweetest things, but I sound like a total hack!

Thanks for including the picture of your shell ring holder - now that I’ve seen yours, I’ll definitely be making something similar! Beautiful pictures, by the way - I love all the laughing!

I wish our Catholic ceremony allowed for vow personalization! We might have to have some vow action at the reception or something!

Thanks all. I’m glad you all thought it was funny too (and I’m not just some big weirdo.)

@Melissa: I think you got it: it really does hit you just a couple days before. Maybe that’s why the words flowed more easily.

@West Coast Bride: Aw, that’s nice! Yeah that’s why I’m glad we did both the free-style and official vows.

@yelli: My MOH held my cheat sheet too, just in case.

@Mrs. Green Tea: Get OUT, girl. Thumb wars?!? That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. I love it.

@piggs2002: You’re so welcome. It’s not worth posting a DIY on it as I basically bought a shell and glued a ribbon on it to tie the rings but it was cute.

@sorry: That’s because we did get married! :) Even though we signed the legal documents back home, to us, the marriage was all about sharing that special moment with everyone we loved. We were so happy to have been able to do that.

Mrs. Breezy - I continue to love and read all your recaps! You are hands down not only one of the most beautiful brides on the outside, but your enthusiasm and spirit are even more beautiful, and reading about all the humor and personal touches in your wedding is great. Your guests must have just had the best time.
