Make My Eyes Pop!

February 25th, 2009 @ 6:09 pm by Mrs. Piglet

What to do, what to do.  I’ve been in two weddings and had my makeup done for each.  I have the crease-less Asian eyes with microscopic eyelashes.  What throws some makeup people off is the downward slope of my eyes when I smile.  They usually apply heavy eyeshadow toward the outer edges to achieve the upward illusion.  In most cases, it’s a tough sell for me because I come out feeling as if I’ve been punched in both eyes.

I take the Amy Winehouse black eyeliner approach to achieve the illusion of bigger eyes.  It kinda works. :D  So here are the before and after pictures of my makeup experiences.  The second one was the best smokey eye application ever attempted, but it was a still a bit heavy for my taste.  For what it’s worth, it came out great in pictures.  The third picture is my first (and only) experience with fake lashes.  I wasn’t a fan of the yellow eyeshadow, but the lashes I likey.  They’re so much fun!

So for all you makeup experts out there, what advice can you offer to creaseless girls like me? :)

Hi!

You have the same eye makeup issue! Have you seen Mrs. Bee’s photo from L.A. (recent post)? She also has mono-lids and her makeup artist did a beautiful job.

Smokey eyes don’t work for me, but clean eyeliner and long, lush lashes is the way I am going based on her post pics. Would rather look natural than punched in the eye or older because of the heavy eyeshadow.

Miss P!!! I love your false lashes! I will also be wearing false lashes for my big day, I absolutely love the “Lush Lashes” by Taylor Pham. Google it! It’s wonderful!

I think color all over your lids will be romantic and elegant. If you like a smokey look, you can do a darker shade at the outer corners and a medium color all over.

I LOVE YOUR POSTS!!! <3

I don’t know but you’re adorable. That photo montage is the cutest. You’re far more talented that I, with a makeup brush :)

Piglet - I am going to do a blog in the next few days about this. It isn’t difficult to do an Asian eye and I will show you how to add definition (pop) the right way. I just had a conversation with Mrs. Bee about this!!!

You look great the way you are! For longer lashes, try Revitalash, NeuLash or Enormous Lash…all three help promote eyelash growth after 1 month of use. My friends are hooked!

i have inner folds (sohk ssang ka pool) that gives the appearance of being monolids. being obsessed with make up, i’ve spent too much money playing with various looks and i’ve found that the best way to accentuate these eyes is to do a light smokey eye with browns (comes out less like you’ve been punched in the eyes), with a light cream base color (MAC: rice paper) and heavier browns used very lightly at the outer crease but with fake eye lashes. Overall, they give off a very pretty polished look and definitely don’t look like panda eyes. if you want pics of what i’m talking about, feel free to message me :)

I love the falsies too. What a difference they make. I have considered extensions for like big day (and the few days before after since they’re semi permanent.)

@ Amy I don’t understand what is special about Taylor’s lashes. Perhaps you mean when she applies them?

I kind of like the yellow shadow - it seems to really open your eyes up. The fake lashes look awesome!

Try applying “Lilash” mascara. This mascara will stimulate growth and your eyelashes will surely “POP”

The first thing I was taught when I was learning makeup design was highlighting the inner corners of the eye will create an illusion of visibly widening the area between them, in turn putting shadow in the inner corners will in fact pull the eyes closer together. It goes the same way for lining your lids. Try playing with highlighting instead of shadowing. Think of it this way, shadow = minus highlight = plus. If you smoke out your eyes and you don’t have a lot of crease to play with you might end up making your eyes look smaller however, it can be done. Try focusing on just the outer corners only and DO NOT line your lower lid anywhere into the pupil area. I’ve lined the outer corners of the lids only with really great results on asian women.

Of course you want your eyes to pop so here’s a some tips to play with. Try a light base shadow all over the lid. Usually it’s best to try something a shade or 2 lighter than your natural skin tone. You can also do this under your lower lash line. Line your top lid with a softer brown or even plum since it looks like you have brown eyes, purple shades contrast nicely with brown eyes to create even more pop. Get as close to the lash line and keep it thin and blended (but it looks like you’re already doing this). Use a darker liner and smoky shade on the outer corners only.

For the lower lid I have a few suggestions. Try not lining it with a pencil at all, just use the smoky shadow (lightly) and don’t go into the area of your iris with it, stay in the white area. If that still doesn’t look quite right try extending the shadow into the pupil area but don’t take it all the way across. There are some great thin angle brushes you can get I use the Sephora Professional line small angle brush because they’re not super expensive and they’re actually really nice. Use the same technique with a pencil just make sure to blend it with a brush so it doesn’t look too thick or dark. After that apply your fake lashes and mascara. Try using mascara on just the outer corners of the lower lid or none at all instead of using mascara on the entire lower lid (but do use it on the entire lash line on the top lid).

I’ve seen some good results with lining the inside corners of the lid with a lighter color like pale lavender, pale pink or even white, this makes your eyes pop but its also tricky and requires a lot of blending. One final tip when trying to make your eyes pop don’t line the part of the lid that touches the eye above the lashes (I think MAC makeup people call this the water line), this will definitely close your eyes up big time!

I also have the same eyes. Lucky for my, my cousin is a make up artist for MAC so I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities to play with make up. I also wear black liquid liner on my upper lid and find that I really like wearing a single color (dark plum for me) and going heavy right up on the lashes and fading upward. I use a light ivory under my brows and blend that down toward the plum. Fake lashes also help a lot too. You should do some more trials and post pictures. There’s a lot to play with.

A good down turned eye correction is done with liner (usually liquid)
Apply the liner on the upper lid along the lash line, but only go 3/4 of the way along your lid, then wing the liner out, this will create the illusion that the eyes are not downturned.
I fail to explain this well, so I made a crappy paint illustration…excuse the crappiness…hopefully you get the idea :)

i also have crease-less eyes, and when i do my makeup, or for others, i:

- put a primer down on my lids so that the shadow stays on the lids and not under my eye

- highlight the brow with a light color with some shimmer

-line my upper lids as close to the lashline with any color liner (it’s super fun when you do purples, blues, greens…)

- lightly coat my shadow brush with a corresponding color to the liner you just used (either the same color or one that will look good blended together) and start at the very base of my lids where the lashes are. i press firmly, wriggle the brush and coat the just penciled area with the powder pigment. this will help to soften the penciled line.

- next, brush the from the base of your lashline UP in short strokes, stopping where the top of your eyeball is. this will help further blend the color.

-take another clean brush (i use my contour brush) to gently sweep back and forth right where the top of your eyeball is.

it’ll basically look like your amy winehouse look (i am assuming u mean heavy eyeliner on top to replicate the look of a crease? i don’t know, your picture didn’t show up) but look much softer, and definitely smokey.

if my explanation doesn’t make sense, i can definitely take pictures for you to show! let me know how it works. :)

I would do the lashes and also use a taupe eye shadow to draw in a crease so it gives your eyes an illusion of a crease. Also, try white eyeliner on the inside of your lash line, that will make it pop and look bigger than it is.

@Becks: wow, thank you for all these tips. i tried highlighting the inner corners of my eye yesterday. i think i like it? it’s hard to tell! i need to take some more pixies and get your opinion. :)

@Cole: Fantastic illustration! I actually do this sometimes. I use Laneige liquid eyeliner, and it has a bit of a thicker tip, so sometimes it looks funny. But whole heartedly agree, that technique works!

@jadie24k: I’d love to see pictures! You definitely take about 5 more steps for eye makeup application than I do, so I must be leaving something out. I’d love to see the results!

Hi Piglet!
Sandra Oh also has creaseless eyes. If I were you, I’d try image-searching her to see some pictures of the way she does her makeup for events. A couple of examples:

Here she is with a taupe color to create the illusion of a crease: http://images.askmen.com/galleries/actress/sandra-oh/pictures/sandra-oh-picture-1.jpg

Here she is with a more blended look (which I actually prefer to the former picture): http://images.askmen.com/galleries/actress/sandra-oh/pictures/sandra-oh-picture-3.jpg

Here she is with a bit of the smokey eye look: http://www.makefive.com/images/200848/1d923d733b6cd5bc.jpg

And here she is with fake eyelashes and dramatic eyeliner (I think this is my fave, although the heaviness of the eyeshadow could translate badly in the wrong lighting) http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2008/specials/emmys/beauty/sandra_oh.jpg

But my main advice to you is - don’t try to disguise your gorgeous eyes. I know that a lot of Asian women with creaseless eyes don’t like them, but I think they’re beautiful. Also, with your lovely skintone, having that nice, flat area above your eye will allow you to play with colors and shimmer in a way that no deep-lidded white girl (like me) could! Look at this picture: http://kimchimamas.typepad.com/kimchi_mamas/images/thilushlashes.jpg

Another very sexy lady with eyes similar to yours is Yunjin Kim. Try looking for images of her, too. Here’s an example: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Hv6CD5qP1TI/RrPrRYOYG2I/AAAAAAAAAQY/474WWues5Z0/s400/yunjin_kim_l5.jpg

Finally, make sure that whatever you do, you use a great primer. I SWEAR by Urban Decay’s Eye Potion…it keeps every little speck of eye makeup in place (even when you WANT to remove it). Since you’ll be using eyeliner, this will be particularly important so that your makeup doesn’t migrate throughout the day as you smile and cry and laugh and dance!

@jadie24k: Ladies, this is advice is spot on. This is how I love to do an asian eye (or causcasian eye). It can be very soft using sheer color or you can go deeper.

I am not a fan of the obvious crease color on any eye. Don’t try to create a crease, rather accentuate your own eyeshape subtly. It is also a much more modern look than the overly done crease. Plus, creases are overrated:-)

@Laura Nadeau: loved the post about this today, laura! i agree, this is exactly the same technique i use on all of my friends. i used to do the “shadow-in-the-crease” technique, but it does look kinda silly with an obvious sweep of color about my eye. i think going with the natural shape of your eye, and using the top of your eyeball, and your browbone to guide your brush works best!

@Miss Piglet: i can bust out my camera if you still want to see!?
