Put a Veil On It

February 25th, 2009 @ 3:28 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

The first veil I ever tried on was around $275. But it was a long, cascading veil, right? Wrong. It only went to my elbows. $275 for a piece of tulle on a comb that barely hit my elbows?! I started to panic at that moment about whether or not I really needed to do this whole getting married thing. Should I be expected to pay so much for something so little just because “wedding” is attached to it?!

Since I’m not the beading/crystal/lace type of bride, I knew that my veil needed to be simple at best, because simple would match my dress perfectly… as well as my personality.

I told my mom that I had found some veils on Etsy that would only run around $30. A deal! Fantastic. She seemed slightly skeptical, but she’s not yet smitten with Etsy the way that I am.

And, of course, as I looked through them all, I was completely overwhelmed with the options, especially the different veils that “cascaded”, and were “2-tiered”, and this, that, and the other. How is a girl to choose?! I flagged a few that I liked and kept on going back to the pictures until I knew I had a favorite. Bella Bridal Veils on Etsy had a simple 1-tier veil with a pencil edge that they would do in diamond white. Best of all, they know how we brides are with decisions, and allow you to return your veil within 10 days if it’s not quite right.

No, this is not me in the pictures… as I’m not made of plastic.

At $24, this is probably one of the best deals I’ve gotten for our wedding. Since I didn’t want all of the bells and whistles that a veil could possibly offer, I couldn’t imagine investing much more for something I’d only wear for an hour or two.
I can’t wait to have a picture of myself in the dress and the veil (and the shoes, and the jewelry… and the list keeps on going…) and see how it all pulls together!

I was also shocked at the price of veils. I couldn’t believe my simple veil was going to be 1/4 the cost of my dress. I actually ended up going to “budget bridal salon” (it actually had budget in the name). They had a smaller selection, but I found exactly what I needed for half the price.

Wow, this makes me feel SO much better. A friend of mine told me the other day that her veil was SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. Seriously, six hundred bucks for something she wore for twenty minutes. At that point, I figured I’d just put a pillowcase on a haircomb and call it a veil, but now that you’ve shown me the way of $24 veils, I’m MUCH, MUCH happier…

@Nothing But Bonfires:
I think we so often feel like we HAVE to spend a lot of money on certain things and that guilt makes us spend crazy amounts of money on things we normally wouldn’t!

For me, a veil just wasn’t worth the money and fuss…instead I’m able to invest more in hair and makeup rather than have to go “bargain basement” for it…all about priorities, sista ;)

I love veils!!! I on the other hand wanted all the bells and whistles! I fell in love with a mantilla veil before finding my dress. So I worked backwards I had a style for my veil but needed a dress to go with it!!
Plus Etsy how can you go wrong with that amazing website!!!

For some reason, I didn’t even think of Etsy! I’m about to start my veil search (over the next few weeks), so this is very timley!

Anyone have an idea how much a chapel or cathedral veil runs on Etsy? :-)

@MagPie518:
Just type it in and you’ll probably have more options on Etsy than you’ll know what to do with :)

I just ordered my veil from the same etsy shop yesterday. I had to re-think my veil options when the one I fell in love with at the store (cathedral length with bead borders) was $400+! I had to gasp for air! Almost as much as my dress! Dear no. So to etsy I turned. I ended up getting this one: http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=14106378

BTW, in your dress post I love the ring pillow!

@pailoflove:
Great choice!

Be forewarned, it took her a little time to send my veil to me, and it came in what looked like a shirt box you’d get from a department store, lol. It was a rainy day so I was worried, but it was VERY well packaged and in pristine condition! But seriously, who can beat the price?!

I bought my veil from her about a month ago also! I love it- it’s the bubble style veil on her site. But, like Miss Stilleto, it took quite a while for it to get to me. She has poor communication with my mom, who ordered it. She never replied to a single email! It also came in a cheap shirt box, and I was worried because it was wet and dirty on the outside, but my veil was neatly tucked in a thick plastic bag inside. It is exactly what I wanted and still worth it!

My mom bought my veil for $80 from the shop before I could protest. It irks me that I know I could have gotten a better deal, but I suppose I didn’t have to pay for it, so I can’t complain too much.

I, too, was totally confused by all of the different types of veils.

i always planned on wearing my great-grandmother’s veil, which many women in my family have worn (and it is gorgeous!) but a couple years ago my 2nd cousin wore it for her wedding and it mysteriously vanished afterwards (which no one figured out until now when i started asking about it). so….i’m still really hoping it will turn up somewhere because i would really love to wear it. but if it doesnt i need something else obviously and i too am overwhelmed by the choices and prices of veils!

I ordered my birdcage veil from Connie too! Although it was slow to ship, she communicated with me and the veil was very simple, but well made. I think almost all bridal accessories can be found on Etsy at this point. I’ve found my sister’s birthday present and almost all of my bridesmaid gifts there!

I’m with you on the crazy prices of veils! Sheesh — it’s just a piece of tulle!

Since I’m going for such a simple dress I wanted an ornate veil. Something with lots of lace!! But until I find the dress, I can’t buy the veil!!

I ordered mine from Candi Merle at Crowning Glory. I just sent her pictures of veils that I liked and she did a great job with my veil. So much cheaper than the bridal stores. I can’t tell the difference between a $400 veil vs. a $50 one, so it wouldn’t be worth it for me to spend a lot!

I actually bought a veil on the Weddingbee classifieds! I hope it works the way I want it to, but now I’m wishing I had a simple pencil edging on my veil, and the one I bought has a plain cut edge… :-/

Thanks for the info, Stiletto! I’ve been putting off looking for a veil because of the price, but I’m definitely going to check out this Etsy find!

Ebay sealed the deal for me in a very similar way! I think I paid $12 plus shipping! And our veils are very similar!

mine came from weddingveil.com and was very affordable ($135, with shipping).
i wanted a mantilla so badly that i didn’t care what it looked like with my dress. i was a little nervous about ordering since i had found them on my own. if you check it out, don’t be scared by the website. it’s not very slick but their customer service and price more than makes up for it.
my veil was perfect and i was able to enjoy wearing it until i took my dress off that night.

The bridal store I went to had a cathedral-length veil with blusher (no edging, which is what I want) for about $130. Not too bad, but I think I’m still going to try making my own. :)

If I’m feeling particularly saucy I’m going to try attaching teeny tiny swarovski crystals throughout it.

I got the same veil!!! It arrived a few weeks ago and looks great with my dress. I could not believe the great quality and low price, considering that so many veils I saw at bridal shops were in the hundreds of dollars.

Enjoy your veil!
