Rihanna is My Workout Buddy

February 25th, 2009 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Latte

It’s 6PM, 30 minutes into my weekly Bosu class. At this point, my legs feel like Jell-O and I’m checking the clock every 5 seconds willing it to go faster. I put my head down and press on… and suddenly feel an extra jolt of energy. My arms pump harder, I add a little hop to my step and…what’s this? I’m even singing along to the song coming through the sound system. The source of my new found energy? “Umbrella” by Rihanna.

Yup, I love Rihanna and her umbrella. I know it was totally overplayed back in 2007, and I, too, have fallen victim to the so-annoying-but-ever-so-catchy “ella ella” that you just can’t get out of your head.

(Sorry, I’m sure this is happening to you right now). But I love the song, and it honestly gives me an extra “kick” during my workouts. I’ve used this to my advantage by strategically placing it at a crucial point in my “workout” song playlist. When I’m tired from running (or gliding) up the “hills” on my treadmill (or elliptical), a little “ella ella” takes me a long way.

There are a few other songs that push me along through my workout routine. I thought I’d share with you my favorite workout playlist. It’s about 50 minutes long, which is perfect for a 45 minute workout and a 5 minute cool down. The songs are placed in this exact order to get me through a good workout with a couple of small “hills” and 2 grueling bigger ones.
I will admit that I am a bit embarrassed by some of my song choices, as this playlist includes songs by the Simpson sisters, Miss Duff, and the lovely Britney Spears. But I will push my dignity aside for the sake of the hive. No shame!
  • “L.O.V.E.” by Ashlee Simpson
  • “Crazy” by Britney Spears
  • “Get Right” by Jennifer Lopez
  • “Sexyback” by Justin Timberlake
  • “With Love” by Hilary Duff
  • “Shut Up and Drive” by Rihanna
  • “Umbrella” by Rihanna
  • “Summer Love” by Justin Timberlake
  • “A Public Affair” by Jessica Simpson
  • “Let’s Get It Started” by the Black Eyed Peas
  • “Stronger” by Kanye West
  • “Mo Money, Mo Problems” by Notorious BIG, Mase and P.Diddy
  • “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree
Which songs on your workout playlist give you an extra boost of energy?

I love the upbeat “Killer” songs — they’re just the right tempo for a MagPie-paced run!

Killers are definately on my list too! Black Eyed Peas have some good ones, and the “guilty pleasure” music always makes it on my list — like Spice Girls, N*sync, and Britney Spears.

I love this list! Also, my fiance loves working out to Rihanna, although of course he never admits it to anyone but me.

I like to workout to anything that makes me visualize me in my wedding dress–for me, the soundtrack of Marie Antoinette is perfect. For whatever reason, many of the songs make me think “wedding,” which of course makes me think about my wedding dress, a satin ivory sheath dress, which of course makes me want to work my butt off.

Thank you for sharing your list!

Many of mine are really kind of weird, but make sense when you realize that I am training for a marathon in honor of my mom who passed away in 2005. My first song, which I think might work for lots of people is “Standing outside of the fire” by Garth Brooks. The other one which I think may only work for people in my situation is “You Can’t Lose Me” by faith Hill.
Also on my list
Mambo #5. I know chees-sy, but what can I say, It is up beat
Also almost anything by Fergie makes my work out go by faster. Funny how those poppy songs make working out easier.

Old school Stuff is
Manic Monday,
Material Girl.

All “older” badass girlie stuff - loads of Britney, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Christina, JLo, etc., etc., etc.

I downloaded a bunch of the more upbeat songs (including the one that just won an Oscar) from Slumdog Millionaire. They have such a great beat, they really keep me going!

Anything by Mz. Spears or Mr. Timberlake (including his earlier stuff with N*SYC)

Oh and cheesy Club Booty music, like Shake dat Azz Bitch or Time for the Percolator really get me in high gear!!!

OOPS… can’t forget the southern rap of the early 2000s… not going to lie, Lil John, Luda, and Mystical really get me pumpin’ hard :)

My power song was overplayed in its day too!
Survivor - Destiny’s Child
I always think of ex-Bfs and it makes me work harder like “Yeah see? I don’t need you! I’m good enough on my own!!”

I love Rihanna too . Her songs are definitely a staple. But I can’t work out without Beyonce. Her B-day album is killer for cardio.

Stronger by Kanye West is a TOTAL favourite of mine too!
