About Mrs. Glitter

Spiffing Up Groomie

February 25th, 2009 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Glitter

For the past couple of months I have been taking better care of myself and have been trying to prioritize my health and skincare (e.g. cutting out nasty habits like eating junk food and falling asleep with make-up on, increasing my workouts to every other day, and finally starting to take vitamins daily). I have been so busy worrying about myself (how vain!) that I forgot about poor, little ol’ Mr. G!

Mr. G is an accountant, and as every accountant out there knows, it is currently “busy season”. (That wonderful time of year from late January to May when Mr. G works ridiculous hours and I’m lucky if I see him at all during the week.) The high work stress, wedding worries, and everything else, has taken its toll on Mr. G. He has less motivation to work out and has gained about 5 pounds (darn those company provided meals!). His skin has paid a price and he has been suffering from mini-breakouts and stress zits. The list goes on.

Now that we are about 4 months from the big day, I want Mr. G to feel healthy and look his best, too. Plus, I feel bad that he is working SO hard and his health pays the price. We have had a few conversations about how he can make some improvements. His main issue is weight loss, and he wants to lose 15 pounds by June. Here is the plan we’ve come up with thus far.

Diet

1) Before dashing to work, Mr. G eats a bowl of Nature’s Path Flax Seed Cereal and grabs a banana and yogurt for the road.

2) For lunch, Mr. G’s coworkers like to eat out. I used to encourage him to bring his lunch from home (less costly, more health conscious), however, I realized that it cut into social time with his coworkers. He needs a breather. So, he eats lunch out with friends and usually eats half of whatever he orders, and saves the rest for a mid-afternoon snack.

3) For dinner, Mr. G is replacing rich, carb-heavy meals with Nutrisystem food. The food isn’t spectacular, but it is filled with protein and helps him to keep his intake small and his energy up.

His current work schedule is too grueling for him to adhere to the normal Nutrisystem plan of 3 square diet meals per day. I think he would probably pass out if he had to stick to it!

4) It goes without saying that he is drinking TONS of water! He is finding that trips to the water cooler are a great way to take breaks during work hours.

5) I think that Mr. G needs to be taking a good multi-vitamin. Any of you know of a good one for men?

Skin

1) Mr. G shares my problem of going to bed without washing his face. He is currently trying to change that bad habit by religiously washing up before bedtime.

2) As an adolescent, Mr. G had skin issues. He tried several products, but his problems followed him into his early college years. Then, he gave Proactiv a try, and it worked. His skin was flawless when I met him. He was using it up until a couple of years ago. It started to get pricey and we didn’t think he would need it anymore. Well, some of his troubles have resurfaced and now he has decided he will give Proactiv another try.Exercise

1) Mr. G started a running club at work. Although there are only 3 members in the club, they try and get out and run together at least twice a week at night. He also plays basketball and lifts weights one evening a week with my little brother and friends.

2) We prioritize exercise on the weekends. Long walks, runs, and fresh air with our dog, Emma, are a MUST every Saturday or Sunday.

3) He is thinking about incorporating at least one morning workout, as well. We have a tiny gym in the basement of our condo that needs to be utilized more!

Mr. G is still in the beginning stages of his “feel better” plan. His goals are very realistic and he has more of a “baby steps” mentality than me. But I also have more time to obsess about things and, as a woman, I naturally think about it more anyway. Regardless, he wants to improve himself before our wedding and he is on a good path so far.

Is your groom making a few “improvements” before the big day? If so, what is he doing to help himself?

That is great that he’s on board with it. Did you ask him to lose weight?

Mr. MagPie and I are very competitive, so we channel that towards inspiring one another to eat well and exercise!

my fiance works out more than I do, but eats much worse than I do. I hope when we’re married I will get him to eat better and he’ll drag me to the gym!

Doing fitness and wellness together is hard work when you’re long distance!

Way to go Mr. G. The fact that he is taking initiative is awesome. Good for him. Wish I could get FI to take some initiative for his own health. Maybe he will when he realizes e-pics are coming up and the vainer side of his psyche takes over. :) I love him and he looks great to me, I just wish he took better care of his health.

The Mister has started taking vitamins every day, and working out about every other day. Mostly because of my prodding, and he felt guilty because he saw me trying to get it right for the wedding and he felt like he should be, too.

I’ve been working out and trying to eat better for awhile now and would tell Mr. Spin allllllll about it every night on our nightly phone calls. I think he started to feel like he should be making more effort to stay healthy–his school program keeps him crazy busy so it’s easy for him to just eat crap and then unwind while drinking beer with fellow stressed out med students instead of exercising.

But now they have a “man-challenge” to see who can lose a certain precentage of body fat (healthily) by the end of the semester. So he’s sailing along and (of course) getting results much faster than me. And of course he used to be a wrestler so he knows how to drop weight. Darn boy and his darn metabolism! Grr. ^_^

Just a quick side note - I used proactive for years and then stopped because of the price as well. When I started to get more breakouts (new stressful job with odd hours) I went back and wasn’t happy. I switched to the Clinique Acne system and it has worked fabulously - I can’t say enough good things about it. My fiance also started using it with very good results. It keeps the skin matte but can be a bit drying at first - after a two or three weeks your skin gets used to it. Anyway - sorry to take up so much room but I thought it might be helpful to everyone out there. Good luck with the “baby steps” miss G!

New Chapter makes a great daily multi-vitamin for men- you can get it at Whole foods or any natural health store. They have a great one for women too and both really boost energy!

My fiance and I are both accountants, so we can feel Mr. G’s pain. Last year was my first ever tax season, and I think I gained about 10-15 pounds. This year I’m trying to be better, so I’ve already joined weight watchers, have been running on my elliptical 3-4 nights a week, and began using ProActiv. It’s definitely a stressful time of year, so it’s good that you are being supportive and encouraging.

I feel like I wrote this post myself! Mr. S is also an accountant and I’m in law school ~ we both gained quite a bit of weight in our 3+ year relationship. I just started to go back to the gym 4 times a week to work off my school stress. He’s at work practically all day during the busy tax season so he eats out with co-workers to take a little breather during the day and tries to pack healthy sandwiches for dinner. We’ve been trying to find good spots to hike in LA on weekends. He also loves flax seed cereal + fruit + yogurt for breakfast/snacks.

@chicagowife: Actually, Mr. G is more concerned with his weight than I am. His parents are very weight conscious and are always hounding him about it. So, I guess you can say they motivate him? :)
@lobstergirl: I feel your pain! Mr. G did not care much about his health until recently. I hope Mr. Lobster gets on board soon!
@SpinningJenny: My younger bro and his friends had a “man challenge” last summer. It worked miracles for two of his overweight friends - they each lost over 50 lbs! Men do shed pounds much faster than women. What’s up with that?!
@Jennifer: Thanks so much for the tip! I wonder why Proactiv stopped working? I’ll let Mr. G know about the Clinique line. Thank you!
@Gypsygal: Fabulous! I will look into it asap. Thanks.
@brighteyes6608: I feel for you and your FI! This week Mr. G has been coming home every night after I’m asleep. It really sucks.
@Ms. Sapphire: Hahaha! We’re leading parallel lives! This is so strange because I was just talking to both my mom and Mr. G about hiking trails in L.A. Mr. G and I found an amazing trail a couple of years ago, and now we both can’t remember exactly where it was. You’ve reminded me to look it up. I’ll PM you when I find it!

GNC also makes excellent multi-vitamins, they come in powdered form too- I take the women’s daily ultra in vanilla powder, but my husband takes their mega-man vitamin in pill form. They are pharmaceutical grade, so they actually dissolve and are absorbed by your body, unlike plenty of over-the-counter vitamins from grocery stores and pharmacies that don’t really do much. Those vitamins at Whole Foods sound good too, I’ll have to look into them!

My FI has been running at the gym and taking the dog out for really long walks. He doesn’t do diets, but I don’t expect him to! He doesn’t have any goals for the wedding, he’s so laid back. It’s totally opposite from me! I’m obsessive, and have set a goal for everything from weight to hair to skin to nails! Poor thing doesn’t know I’m crazy!

if you like proactive, but not the price there are over the counter options for much cheaper.

the active ingredient in proactiv is benzoyl peroxide. if you look at your local drug store you can find products with benzoyl peroxide, there is PanOxyl bar that is 10% benzoyl peroxide. Oxy 10 of course, clean and clear makes a face wash that is also 10% benzoyl peroxide (it is in a purple container).

the key is consistency. using the over the counter products is much, much cheaper than proactiv and it is exactly the same.

-I’m a doctor and have worked with many dermatologists who recommend forgoing the cost of proactiv and using over the counter benzoyl peroxide products. just FYI they will bleach clothing and towels so you have to wash it all off.

thankfully my groom’s less of a slob than i am, so HE’S been the one making sure i shape up well for our wedding!!

Due to my religious checking of Wedding Bee before bed…you inadvertently reminded me to wash my face! I am big on baby steps too, but I understand feeling the need to dive right into it. I’ve tried that before and failed, which is why I decided to take the transition a little slower. I’ve been working on my eating habits for a few weeks so it would become second-nature, and just recently started increasing the focus on exercise. It’s working for me though! As for the skin, I find that just washing my face with an exfoliating wash every morning, and following that up with toner and spot-treatment creams (and mosturizer) ever morning and then the same thing at night (altho with a different cleanser) works fine. I use Biore exfoliating cleanser and Biore Ice cleanser, and I use AcneFree Terminator 10 (which is 10% Benzoyl Peroxide as well) for the spot treatment.
My man (the lucky one) is very fit and has great skin, he mostly just needs to work on eating a more balanced diet, which he decided to do without my suggesting it!
