Plan B (Not the Contraceptive)

February 26th, 2009 @ 10:55 am by Mrs. Cheese

I’m a girl who’s gotta have a backup plan under the best of circumstances, and leaving the details of my bouquet to the whims of our rose garden (I say “our” with a bit of irony, since our only contribution is likely to be that we manage to kill them weeks before our wedding) makes that doubly true.

Plan B was always to beg our neighbors to let us have our way with their flower bushes, but I think I’ve found a better backup plan, and they deliver.

Yea, baby, I’m sending myself flowers!

I love Proflowers. Unlike many online florists, they don’t pawn your order off on a local flower shop. Instead, they deliver your flowers via FedEx/UPS (I can’t remember which)… right to your door!

They come in a spiffy little box like this:

I’ve used them quite a few times for gifts and each time the recipient has raved about the quality of the flowers. And their customer service is FANTASTIC. I made the mistake of sending my mom flowers without making sure she’d be home, and just my luck, they were headed out of town for a long weekend. When I called ProFlowers to beg them to hold the shipment, I was too late — but they sent her another bouquet a few days later for free. Seriously. I didn’t lie, fib, or bat my eyelashes, either. They’re just that cool. {Note: I’m not getting anything from them for saying this. Swear.}

I’m leaning toward a hot pink bouquet, but I’m not sure yet. If I do, I’ll order these happy carnations to make mini-bouquets and bouts.

Total cost with shipping is about $70, which is a steal for a bridal bouquet. The flowers are already “designed”, they deliver to your door, they’re relatively inexpensive… just my style. Call it almost-DIY, but I think it’s a great idea (even if I do say so myself).

Anybody else being creative about your florals?

Oooh, pretty! I’m partial to the purple, orange, red and green bouquet — since it’s very close to my color scheme.

I’ve received proflowers and they were GORGEOUS! I totally recommend them! (Plus it’s free glassware for your reception if you find the right vases!!)

I don’t have a backup plan, but after some blogs about “flowers in the freezer” (is that really common????) I’m seriously worried!!

A good “green” alternative to have as a back-up plan: if your wedding’s on a Saturday, there are probably local farmers’ markets with pretty flowers for you to grab! Especially for spring/summer weddings. Also, you can always check upscale grocery stores, like Whole Foods for gorgeous “Plan B” flowers.

Since the only flowers we’ll be having will be my bouquet, I just plan on going to a few local grocery stores the day before and seeing what they have. I’ll throw together my bouquet the morning of the wedding and be done with it. I dont plan on spending more than $30. They’ll be dead by the end of the day anyway. Especially in August heat at an outdoor wedding.

Yours is a great idea though, I hadn’t even thought of that!

That’s a great idea Miss Cheese!! Especially for locations where another “option B” doesn’t really exist (such as our small rural location)

Just a note. Have used pro flowers before sending flowers to my mom and grandma and they turned out great, but T sent me a dozen and a half roses from them on Valentine’s Day and they were tightly budded, never opened even a little and died.

Just had to say. I know fifty flowers does great wedding work too! And inexpensive!

You do have a great idea for a plan B.

It sounds very romantic to send yourself flowers, but it’s a plan B with a pretty big carbon footprint, I think. If you want a simple bouquet, featuring predominantly one type of big bloom (especially something like carnations, which are hardy and available year round all over the place) why don’t you try working with a local wholesaler (they’re usually the ones that supply the grocery store floral departments, and are usually cheaper as a result). I promise it will be cheaper than $70, and the earth will thank you for it:-)

Pro Flowers is great! My FI always uses them when he sends me flowers at work. They always come in great condition. Your plan B is a great backup plan! :)

I hate Pro Flowers! I’ve gotten flowers from them a few times, and everytime I do, they are dead when they arrive or die within two days. I’ve heard from lots friends, that this has happened to them also.

I’d be careful using them as your back-up plan!

My now DH sends me Valentine’s flowers every year from ProFlowers. They always last so long cause they don’t usually bloom for 3-4 after receiving the flowers. I still have the Stargazers Lilies he sent me for V-day this year!!!

I used to work at Pro Flowers, so I’m a little biased, but I <3 them. They don’t come bloomed because they are shipped straight from the grower, and that’s why they usually last 2 weeks. :)

Also, a little discount tip: if you type “radio” into the “have a coupon code” box at the top right, you’ll get something for free, usually a vase. :)

Great idea! And Mr. Latte is a huge ProFlowers fan…I joke that he should buy stock in them.

Have used Proflowers for my WEDDING and they were AWESOME!!! My coordinator was really mad when she heard I did this because I didn’t want to deal with another vendor but was completely happy with the quality when she finally saw them - you can actually check out what the big reveal was like as my wedding was featured on Whose Wedding is it Anyway (episode: Love, Marriage, and a Baby Carriage - Hubby and I are the MD couple) - hope this doesn’t seem like a plug for the show so much as I’m trying to plug Proflowers because I’m a fiercely loyal customer of theirs!

i had a bad experience with proflowers. . . the flowers showed up in marginal (at best) condition, and they were supposed to come with candy which didn’t arrive, and when he called, they apologized and said it would be there the next day (but didn’t offer a refund or an upgrade or anything)– it wasn’t, and when it arrived (two days later) it was melted. so, i’d just use caution using them for something as important as your wedding!

Another great idea is fiftyflowers.com

They have lots of options for bridal flowers, and ship them directly to your home a few days before the wedding. I’m planning to use flowers from their centerpiece collection for centerpieces and bridesmaid bouquets, plus I’m ordering my all rose bouquet from them too. They have so many options at great prices, and their customer feedback seems great!

Happy planning!

My finance and I are long distance so I often get my flowers delivered to me. Unfortunately they never look that great, so I probably won’t get flowers delivered to me even though I really want to DIY my flowers and bouquet will be super simple(just red roses…maybe also ostrict feathers and strings of pearls, or white stephanotis)

Their customer service really is awesome. I one got flowers from them that had a little issue, so they sent another bouquet the next day without a problem.

Good idea! :o) One word of caution…I ordered flowers a few weeks ago for my step-mother’s birthday (granted, she lives in Wisconsin and it IS February), and the flowers arrived…FROZEN!

TWICE!
(they even shipped out another bouquet)

I will say that PROFLOWERS was super nice about it and refunded my money - including shipping. They also gave me a discount coupon for a future order, which I will likely use.

Just a word of caution if you are getting married somewhere frigid!

Congrats by the way! :o)

I don’t want to sound like an advertisement, but I did want to mention that FTD also offers carrier delivered items. We do both. :D

@pdxkate: I’m so sorry to hear that. We’ve had several issues with that as of late as well.

warning. my fiance had ordered me roses that came in a free glass vase for Valentines Day.

Not only did the delivery man throw the box up our stairwell and left them out on the porch but the flowers were wilted when they arrived.

my fiance was so disappointed and pissed that they came so late, 5pm on Vday and they were poorly handled and wilted.

I am lifting an idea from a bridal magazine–I am going to get a couple of manzanita branches and wiring a few magnolias to them as my bouquet.

sorry

@beaninca: wouldn’t that the the delivery company’s fault and not proflowers?? Some delivery people just don’t care and exposed flowers (really hot day or really cold) wilt.

I agree that is a great idea!! Looks like all you would have to do is tie a pretty ribbon around them! I love the one in the green vase with the orange roses :)

That’s a brilliant idea Miss Cheese! I’m doing something similar myself, just going to pick up a regular flower bouquet at some florist and make my own bridal bouquet from it. It will save us quite a bit :)

This is a FANTASTIC idea!! I was going to do silk flowers, and I may still use them for the bridemaids’ bouquets, but oooh, I’m selfish enough to want real flowers. Brilliant, Miss Cheese- you get so many props.

I actually was going to do this as well! It will definitely save a lot.

I did visit a florist about a week ago and the pricing is close to the budget we have set forth.

I might use grocery store flowers though for the table arrangements.
