Anemone Anticipation

February 27th, 2009 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Stiletto

It’s slightly ironic that anemone flowers can signify anticipation, a sweet sentiment when you think about holding a bouquet of them right before walking down the aisle. They can also mean “forsaken” and “a dying hope”, but I choose to ignore those meanings.

I had never heard of an anemone flower until recently. Our florist and I were throwing white flower ideas back and forth via email earlier this month, and she threw out this as an option, but with the understanding that they may not be in season for our wedding (September is a little early for them to be in season).

Swoon! I of course love them more than any other flower I’ve ever seen, and I love the contrast between the snowy white petals and the black speckled centers. Could any other flower be so perfectly made for a black and white wedding? I think not. Needless to say, I’m left in anticipation, wondering if I’ll get the perfect flowers for the perfect day.

Anemone flowers are just as beautiful in some of their other colors, including this great shade of blush. Learn more about anemones, and scroll down to continue swooning right along with me.

Take a guess, ; )
I’m hoping for white tulips for my BM’s and peonies, hydrangeas, tulips and a few roses for me. (all white). The gals will have the blunt cut tulip bunches wrapped with a fabric ribbon in our wedding green, I may use my FI’s family tartan as a wrap for my bouquet.

I wanted anemone flowers for my October wedding but the florist said they would not be available. They are gorgeous!

I would love to have peonies, but all of the florists are telling me that July is not the season for them. (Even though in my yard in July the peonies are going off!)

I think I might be doing garden roses and anemones with a few calla lilies instead :)

TULIPS!! They stand for “perfect love” and what could be more perfect for a wedding!! I’m a little worried too because they are just out of season in July, but I’ll be using Ice tulips! I can’t wait!!

Oooo, I’m jealous! I so wanted these — black is one of our accent colors — but they won’t obviously be available in late August!

@Miss D’orsay:
It will be a slim chance, at best! I was a little bummed when my florist suggested them, I fell in love and then she’s like, “Oh that’s really early for their season”..ummm. So i’m keeping my fingers crossed, white dahlias I think are my second choice…. :)

I’ve never heard of that flower either; they are very pretty. Kind of remind me of a kiwi’s center :)

Miss S — please PUHLEASE let us know immediately if they are available for your big day! I’ll be dying to hear!

These are pretty. I didn’t know what these flowers are called before this post. =)

You know, if these flowers are not in season, maybe you can ask Diane from dkdesignshawaii to see if she can make them for you. She had done them recently in clay. See picture on:

Good luck!

I have no idea what flowers to do for ours, thats a task I’ll tackle this summer (were not doing real flowers so we can do whatever we want). I agree with HappiJoyce, an alternative is to do a fake version if you really must have anemone, which I think are gorgeous and may have in mine now!!

I was also suffering from anemone anticipation (hence my avatar pic)! However I decided not to take the chance, and I’m ordering artificial anemones instead so I can be sure that I’ll have them. They are real touch, which I’ve heard look and feel VERY real! So that’s always an option if you’re as die-hard about the anemone as I am :)

I am still waiting for my florist to give me a quote for anemone bouquets for the bridesmaids… I hope that they don’t cost an arm and a leg! Good luck on your side as well! :)

Our florist said that she’ll have “no problem” getting them for our May wedding (we met and booked her back in May of last year). I walked into her shop with “I want ranunculus and anemone, and that’s it.” and she’s guaranteed they’ll both be there. And, the anemone are only $4/stem through her. Other florists were quoting us more than double that.

I didn’t realize when I booked that they are becoming such a popular wedding flower!

Keeping my fingers crossed (on my left hand) for you, Miss S! The fingers on my right hand are already crosssed for my peonies. :)

What flowers is your florist suggesting to be in season? I am also a september bride. Right now I am mostly going with dahlias since they will be in season and I get them from local growers. Since I am doing my own flowers I don’t know what else I can get locally and in season.

@caeebe:
Bear in mind that we’re doing white and green so we’re not getting too crazy with the flowers! :) But I just looked at my contract and these are the flowers she outlined we may or may not work with:

-Dahlias
-Anemones (if available)
-Roses
-Hydrangeas
-Cimbidium Orchids
-Dendrobium Orchids

If I can’t get anemones, I’m probably going to use Dahlias…they’re such a fun flower with a great shape! And that’s great for you that you can easily get them locally :)

Ahhh! I’m having my girls carry a bouquet of anemones and lisianthus (sp?). Gorgeous! They are so fabulous I can’t even take it! I wish I knew how to attach photos on here, I’d share with you the fabulous photo that I have. :)

I LOVE anemones- I knew I’d found the right flower the second I saw them in Brides and Blooms haha! Don’t discount them too fast- I’m worried cuz I’ve been told they wilt fast, so I’ve been considering getting in contact with DK Designs to see if she could do them- I know another bee used her, and have heard that the prices are about on par with live flowers- just a thought!

Anemones have such a cool, chic, retro look! I wish they came in colors other than white.

Iris - not only do they come in purple (my favorite color) and coordinate with our lavender & platinum color theme, but a fleur-de-lis is a stylized iris, and being from New Orleans, it’s an easy way to incorporate that into our wedding in a subtle way.

Miss Stilleto - When are anemones available? I’m also doing a black and white wedding and was considering on using them for my bouqets. I haven’t decided on my accent color. I’m torn between green, fushia and teal….maybe I will do all of them! haha. I’m getting married in December.
