Mrs. Sea Breeze's Picture
Mrs. Sea Breeze, Vancouver/Dominican Republic Age in 2008 and Occupation: 30, Communications Manager Fiance's Age in 2008 and Occupation: 29, Experiential Marketing Director Engagement Date: October 6, 2007 Wedding Date: November, 2008 Blogging Since: July 17, 2008 Venue: Majestic Colonial Resort, Punta Cana About Me: Planning a destination wedding by the sea should be (oh no she di-in't…) a breeze (…*sigh* yep, she did) but when you've never been to the Caribbean, your powers of imagination are really put to the test. Luckily, I'm 90% resourceful, creative optimist (and kooky, neurotic practicalist-if-that's-a-word for the other ten). About Mrs. Sea Breeze

DW in the DR: Mazel Tov!

February 27th, 2009 @ 1:28 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

When we planned our wedding day, we wanted to make sure we incorporated at least one Jewish tradition (Mr Breezy’s side) and one Polish tradition (my side).

We decided that one thing we definitely had to do was the Jewish breaking of the glass.

1

There are several interpretations of what this tradition symbolizes:

  • Temple: Breaking of the Jewish wedding glass is a reminder of the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem.
  • Superstitious: A loud noise is thought to drive away evil spirits.
  • Sadness/Joy: A reminder that even in times of great joy that there is sadness, and that life will bring sadness as well as joy.
  • Hymen: A breaking of the glass represents symbolically the breaking of the hymen, and the consummation of the marriage.
  • Fragile: The glass symbolizes the love and relationship of the couple and is fragile, so it must be cared for and not broken.
  • Broken World: A reminder that although the couple came together as a single union, the world as a whole is broken and needs mending.
  • Marriage is Forever: A broken Jewish wedding glass is forever changed, likewise, the couple are forever changed by the marriage and take on a new form.
  • Be Fruitful: A hope that your happiness will be as plentiful as the shards of glass…or that your children will be as plentiful as the shards of glass.

Source

In our ceremony, the symbolism was a hybrid of the temple meaning and the sentiment that life is fragile, and will be forever changed after that day.

He placed the glass, which was wrapped in a linen napkin, on the ground. And after one false attempt, Mr Breezy put his foot down for the last time.

2

Brian, the non-official (but officially awesome) Officiant: By the power vested in me by you, you and a website I found on the Internet, and by the power of your love and the commitment you have made to each other, we all pronounce you husband and wife.

3

You may now kiss the bride.

4

One of the songs that makes us happiest in the world - Higher and Higher - started playing, and we triumphantly exited the gazebo.

5

Of course, we couldn’t leave our own party, could we? We turned around and marched right back in there and were instantly engulfed in a sea of laughter, smiles, hugs, and champagne.

sbsmall1

We spent an incredibly joyful half hour just… being happy together.

6

Of course, there were pictures, pictures, and MORE PICTURES. I love that we have a katrillion photos of all our family and friends.

sbsmall2

And just when everyone thought they were all pictured out, we started herding everyone down the path and back into the lobby…

7

I had my heart set on a group shot and somehow, despite the chaos, Photophil made it happen.

8

Surrounded by love, we were married! Our ceremony was over but there was much fun still to come.

Did you incorporate any cultural traditions into your wedding day?

Photos by the splendiferous Photophil Steingard and wonderrific Michael Steingard. Our two brave friends Todd and Dave caught the whole thing (and then some) on tape, for which we are eternally grateful.

I think my fav pic from your whole wedding is the kiss, TOTALLY AMAZING!! I’m polish thru and thru, so we’re going to the apron dance, the silly hat dance (not sure what its really called), and probably the salted bread and wine after the ceremony. And I agree, MORE BREEZY WEDDING!!!

Another amazing Breezy recap! Your cocktail hour looks like EXACTLY the type of feel and photography we want from ours. Our photographer said that most pictures from my wedding should have me in it, but I’m going to bookmark this post and send it to her to show her the type of memories I want her to try and capture.

Was it hard to get everyone together for a group shot or did you leave this to Photophil entirely? I want one too!

@Miss Meatball: Aw Meaty, you make me sniffle. It’s the happy glow - you will have it too!

@dogcatrabbit: Our Polish tradition? To be revealed in a future post!

@lreighard1: @MrsSl82be: Ha ha, awesome! Don’t worry, there’s LOTS more coming. I guarantee you will totally be 100% sick of me by the time I’m finished.

@LatteLove: Isn’t it the greatest song?! It just makes my heart soar.

@West Coast Bride: I told Photophil from the get-go that our wedding was not to be just about us but about all our friends. So he was well prepared and as a result, we got SO MANY awesome shots of them without us in them. As for the group shot, I also told him from the beginning this was the plan and he figured out the perfect time of the day to do it. He and Michael all helped herd everyone into the lobby for it. I admit, I may have shouted a bit impatiently at one point but hey, no one wanted to leave the gazebo ’cause we were all having such a good time there! I’m super happy it turned out so well. We have a few different ones, even.

I love the group photo!! I’m hoping to get a good one at our church because we have a choir loft that can get a great shot of everyone from above…. hopefully it will turn out as wonderful as yours! :)

I think that is soooo sweet, I loved how much you incorporated your guests into the action, I especially love that group photo!
I wish I could fit all 200 of my guests in a group shot! lol

This was my favorite recap of yours thus far. I teared up at the B&W shot of you all hugging. Probably my favorite wedding picture to date. You can tell so much by that one shot.

Congrats.

We’re incorporating our two cultures too!! I’m Hawaiian and he’s Scotch Irish, so we’re playing Ke Kali Ne Au for our ceremony, and we’re doing a handfasting!! Yay fusion!
