Makeup Trial, Part I

February 12th, 2009 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Cheese

Let’s talk about sensitive skin - AND HOW IT TOTALLY SUCKS. At the slightest irritation, my eyelids get nasty and dry and scaly. Sexy, I know. If the reaction is really bad, the corners of my eyes suffer the same fate. And while the rest of humanity (okay, okay, women in first-world countries) love, love, love mineral makeup, I get clogged pores. Fabulous.

A makeup trial was in order.

I started with MAC, playing hooky (ssshhh) one afternoon to drop by for a consultation. While it looked beautiful, thankyouverymuch, I had itchy eyes and flaky lids within an hour, so I didn’t take any pics before I washed it off. Bummer.

Plan B: Aveda. I heart Aveda. Ready? Here are the pics (yes, I’m a dork). And no, you don’t get before pics. One: why would it matter what I looked like before? Two: I forgot.

Our Photographer

February 12th, 2009 @ 11:29 am by Mrs. Apple Cider

Picking a photographer was quite the task. I thought about it for months (before I even was engaged). I drool over photographers’ blogs and dream of their pictures.

There were a few musts for me when choosing a photographer. They had to be creative, quirky, and non-traditional.

We had quotes from 10 photographers after only 2 weeks of being engaged. (Obsessed?! NO.) The prices were tough to handle… they ranged from $4K to $8K, and I didn’t know what to do. I really wanted to spend that much, but then the economy took a turn, and so did I.

It’s All In the Timing

February 12th, 2009 @ 10:59 am by Mrs. Meatball

I have a question. How do you time out your processional music, if using popular tunes?

I mean, as it stands, we’re thinking of using one song for the bridal party/families, and another song for my grand entrance.

Our aisle is probably all of 20 seconds long to walk.

So, how does it work? Do we fade it out when it’s time to switch tunes, and then fade it out again after I reach the altar? Do we genetically alter the songs to be xx minutes long? But then, what about the fact that my walk is only going to last all of 30 seconds of a 4 minute song? Should I just suck it up and do one song for the whole thing, so my song doesn’t seem so… piddly?

Tell me, wise ones. How do/did you do it?

That Wedding: Bridesmaid Cake Pull

February 12th, 2009 @ 8:33 am by Mrs. Avocado

Throughout our planning process I kept hearing of this thing called a cake pull. From what I understood, it was a Southern wedding tradition, and it happened at the bridal shower. Charms were buried inside of a cake and pulled out by a ribbon, with each charm corresponding to a fortune. I loved this idea, but I wasn’t having a bridal shower where all my favorite ladies would be present.

My solution to this dilemma was to incorporate the tradition into the wedding day! Sounds like a great idea right? Well, it was in theory, but it didn’t quite work out as well as I would have hoped.

Since we had a cake buffet (lots of yummy cake pictures to come!), I simply asked the catering staff to stuff my charms directly into the cake right before the event was to happen. I’m sure they were all standing around in the back talking about the crazy bride (that is the kind of thing I did when I used to cater weddings).

And So It Begins…

February 11th, 2009 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

We’ve been planning our wedding for almost a year now, and we still have about 7 months to go. Through this time, the plans have been growing and changing, as we’ve gone on a rollercoaster ride from themes, to favors, to guestbooks. The one thing that has stayed constant throughout it all is our color scheme.

I wanted something that Mr. Stiletto could jump on board with. No “dusty rose” or “perfect peach” for us. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good shade of pink, and sometimes when I see a picture of a lush pink bouquet, a little bit of jealousy creeps in. But overall, I wanted to keep it high contrast, fresh and modern. And, of course, on a small budget, a black and white color scheme works wonders. There’s no need to be matching certain shades of a specific color that only I really care about. What’s there to match when it comes to black and white?!

The “Perfect Pair” Bridal Shower

February 11th, 2009 @ 5:48 pm by Mrs. Duckling

I recently went to probably one of the best and cutest bridal showers I have ever been to! My cousin “K” got married in November, so we had her shower a month or so before. The shower was thrown by her mom’s book club and was one the most creative showers I’ve seen yet. These ladies are amazing! I took lots of pictures knowing that I would just have to share them with you!!

The theme of the shower was “The Perfect Pair”. I received a cute pink and white invitation detailing all the shower details with little cut-outs of an athletic shoe and a high heel pump dangling off the main invitation. This would be the overriding theme that was carried out so well through the whole event.

When you walked up to the front door you were greeted with an athletic shoe and high heel hanging off the door.

That’s Not My Name…

February 11th, 2009 @ 5:21 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

They call me Stacy… okay, well no one actually calls me Stacy, but I don’t know what I want to be called after August 2009. After Miss Cheese’s name change post, I tried really hard to avoid thinking about our own situation. Since I haven’t made the decision yet (though I have reserved all possible email choices) I thought I’d share what other people in my life have done in regards to the name change situation.

  • My friends Holly and Mike were recently married and went through the same debate as most couples have gone through. She wasn’t sure about changing her name, and he wanted them and their future children to share a last name. They both decided to hyphenate their last names to become Holly and Mike Jones-Smith
  • Possibly the most original idea I’ve ever heard is to make up a last name. MOH MB’s friend’s last name is Posil. His mother’s last name is Polovvy and his father’s last name is Silverman. Get it, Po-sil? They each retained their pre-married names and their child received a combination of their names. I suppose you could always create a family name for the two of you, as well.
  • My friend Stephanie married into a culture where you take your husband’s first and last name. Which would make her Stephanie Jay Kapadia. She really likes her middle name (her first name was chosen by her mother, her middle name was chosen by her father) and she didn’t want to get rid of it, nor did she want her husband’s name as her middle name. She ultimately decided to take on her husband’s last name and keep her own middle name. Since she was able to retain her middle name, she didn’t feel as though she needed her maiden name.
  • My sister kept her maiden name because she felt it was such a hassle to go through all the paperwork required to change it. She says she’ll change it when they’re ready to have children so their whole family will have her husband’s last name.

As for us?

***This is NOT a test of the emergency Bee-roadcast System. This is for real.***

According this article, the price of stamps will go up by two cents in May.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that the price of a first-class stamp will rise to 44 cents on May 11.

That gives plenty of time to stock up on Forever Stamps, which will continue to sell at the current 42-cent rate until the increase occurs. They will remain valid in the future regardless of rate hikes.

While the new 44-cent rate covers the first ounce of first-class mail, the price for each additional ounce will remain unchanged at 17-cents.

I’m thinking that two cents won’t break anybody’s budget, but forgetting and having all of your bee-oo-tiful invites returned for insufficient postage would be… ugg, horrible. So do take note!

***This concludes this Bee-roadcast System message.***

Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

I used to think, “I’m not a conventional girl…” (Mainly because I’m a 36 year old woman.)

But perhaps I’m turning into a version of her: That girl. That girl of lusciously buoyant dresses, ginormous icey rings and sticky sweet frosted cupcakery.

But I’ve never been that girl. I mean, I don’t even like shopping (have you heard?) or anything too sweet (macarons are the extent of it), and have NEVER SEEN an episode of Sex and the City! What?! Now hear what I’m saying, there is nothing wrong with Thatgirl (T.G.). Nothing at all, I think she’s wonderful and fanciful and delightful. All those sweet confectionary things. I love grand flourishes in artwork, concepts, and theory… even touches of it in decor… but not so much on my person, you know?

Well… after Mr. P and I got engaged last Spring, that resistance to T.G. softened (for a short period of time, at least). I got all confused about myself and who I was… I had to see the SATC movie, especially after this email exchange with my friend, M:

I am currently obsessing over boleros right now.

I always find great things on Etsy.com and discovered the shop of Bonzie months ago. How amazing is Bonzie’s work? I love this white bolero.
