“The engagement party is the official celebration of your decision to spend the rest of your life with your fiance.” (from atoasttoyourwedding.com)
Our dear friends P & T threw us an unbelievable engagement party. We had the party quite a few months after we were engaged, but who’s counting?
What matters is that we were surrounded by friends, family and love (and great food!). T is a chef extraordinaire and this night was no exception. She was flawless with her presentation and hostessing. If only I could be that calm and collected with all of those people in my house…
Exquisite food was enjoyed by all (T even made Mac-n-Cheese bites for me):

I have seriously been thinking about how to reduce the clutter at home and was also inspired by Mrs. Bee’s post on Weddingbee Pro about organization. I have a confession to make: Although we moved over a year ago, Mr. Canary and I still have a room (meant to be our office) that is stacked to the brim with stuff that we keep shifting around the apartment because we, a) don’t know what to do with it, b) are too tired to deal with it, or c) started to work on, but never finished it. The room is at the point where we have to move about three boxes and then climb over a few other items in order to get something. There is no room to work. Ultimately, we deal with it by shutting the door and ignoring it until it starts to bother us again and we attempt to organize it some more, but we never manage to get the job done.
Despite having very specific interests, we accumulate A LOT in keeping up with our collections. My vices include: Etsy finds, paper/stationery, shoes (I own over 60 pairs!), and books. I realize a lot of this has to do with me and less so with Mr. Canary who only has a few dear possessions (CDs and books) and is very nice and never scolds me on my purchases. When I am overwhelmed and try to organize, I tend to see it as an opportunity to go nuts at the Container Store and purchase more junk to hide the stuff I should be getting rid of. It’s a vicious cycle!
And it’s not about being clean or messy. Mr. Canary and I are super clean. We even caved and hired a house cleaner who visits every two weeks, but that didn’t help the office situation much. The bottom line is that although we have a clean home, we just never make the time to really tackle the “stuff” we don’t need or want.

Balls. My ring has a pair of balls. I’m sorry for the vulgarity, but it’s true…

Why, you ask? When Mr. D and I finally found the perfect ring, I had tried on hundreds of rings. Seriously, hundreds. All the settings were a size 6, which was just a bit too tiny for my finger. By the time I tried on my ring, my finger was red, puffy, and very swollen. The sales manager sized my finger for the ring and we guesstimated that although I was measuring in at a size 7, that I was actually a size 6.75. He told us that we should only resize a ring twice to avoid damaging the metal.
Once the ring was on my finger, we realized it was a bit too loose.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
When it comes to DIYing wedding invitations, I have to say that those made by using a Gocco machine are pretty awesome. If you’ve been around the hive for a while, surely you’ve noticed a lot of Weddingbee bloggers have used this handy dandy machine to create invites and other fun projects. (Mrs. Penguin, Mrs. Lemon, Mrs. Lime, Mrs. Gummi Bear, Mrs. Peppermint, Mrs. Tiramisu, Mrs. Cupcake, Miss Dumpling, Miss Champagne, Miss Ballet Flat and one talented WB reader, to name a few.)
But there is one teenie-weenie problem with the Gocco: Production of these machines and the accompanying supplies has been discontinued. (OK, OK. Maybe that’s not so teenie-weenie. That stinks big time!)
I came so close to buying a Gocco last year when Paper Source was selling them through their website. In a way, I’m glad I didn’t. They were about $150 and probably would have needed to buy at least $50 in additional inks, screens and bulbs to make our invitations. Without any idea of how I would do our invites, spending $200 back then was unreasonable. Soon thereafter, the “no more Goccos” announcement was made and the supply hoarding began, which increased the price on remaining supplies. Goccos are hard to find now and, from my understanding, so are the bulbs and the screens.
I figured it would only be a matter of time before another company launched a product in hopes of making ANTG (America’s Next Top Gocco).
I guess that day has come, thanks to Provocraft. Introducing the YUDU:

We’re patiently awaiting the arrival of our cardstock to start churning out the Save the Dates, but lord knows, we have tons more to do in the meantime. The ladies and gents in the bridal party were starting to ask when they should arrive in Hawaii, and because of this, another project was born. Our party is geographically dispersed, with some in NY, PA, Vancouver, VA, and CA. That said, we decided to pig-ee back off of other bee innovations (Mrs Lily, Mrs. Jelly Beans, Mrs. Eggplant) and created a newsletter. ![]()
I picked up two wedding magazines on our coffee table for inspiration: The Knot, and Pacific Weddings. After flipping through the first couple of pages, I decided to replicate the layout of The Knot’s Table of Contents. I’m super simple, so the layout remains the same throughout and only the images and text change.
The Cover: Wherever possible, we’re trying to include our engagement photos with Inhar since we love them that much. We had already introduced our bridal party via our wedding website, so the newsletter’s focus was logistical information, bridal party attire, and a brief snapshot of what the Pigsters have been up to since the holidays. Do you see the hibiscus?
The barcode on the bottom right corner also includes the wedding date.

… add more stuff!
I was very cautious in making sure that our tables looked decorative, yet not overcrowded and messy. Originally, we were going to use name cards placed on napkins, but after realizing our tables needed an extra thing or two, I added these…

The bride-to-be (pictured below, not above) gets hitched this coming weekend. Who knew the suburbs would have such a thriving nightlife? I thought the only place you could club-crawl was downtown, but I was wrong! A few of the girls drew up a list of to-dos for the evening, which included kissing a bald man’s head, asking the oldest man in the room to dance, asking a guy for a condom… etc.

I’m not crazy about the idea of spending a lot of money on flowers for the wedding. Not only are flowers expensive (especially in Grand Cayman, where everything has to be shipped in!), but they just aren’t very useful and they die! With the ocean providing a beautiful, natural, setting for the wedding, we are going to try to spend as little on flowers as we can. I’d rather spend that money on some other frivolous item, like lounge furniture around the dance floor, or pretty twinkle lights inside the tent.
One idea I have for saving on flowers is buying handmade boutonnieres and corsages off of Etsy. At 13 bucks a pop, I can’t imagine that they are any more expensive than fresh flower boutonnieres. Plus we can either resell them after the wedding (would it be tacky to have someone track down the groomsmen and ask for them back?) or have everyone keep them as keepsakes from the wedding. Here is one I found on Etsy, and it is conveniently in the aqua and poppy color scheme! Isn’t it cute?!

Are you considering non-live florals? Where are you buying them?
Reader hcookma is selling 10 large glass vases. They are 26″ high, 9″ wide, and tapered to 5″ in middle. She is selling them for $20 each or $175 for all 10. Boston area pickup only.

As soon as I saw this post on the blog of Ksenija Savic (who might just have a harder name to say than I do!), I commented and asked her if I could re-post it here. I loved Anne Ruthmann’s post on Weddingbee PRO that talked about this very subject (and in fact, Ksenija’s post was inspired by Anne’s post). Ksenija took things a step further and broke down in hours how long each step of the process takes.
All the words and photos past this point are by Ksenija herself. I hope this helps you understand just a little bit better what it takes to process a wedding.

Why does it take so long to receive my wedding/portrait images?
(Heather & I decided to collaborate on the verbiage for this post!)
While we haven’t had anyone ask us these questions, at times we wish they would! We wonder if people might be asking themselves these questions, or if they perhaps want to know more about the logistics of it all!

Let’s use a wedding as an example! Here are the basic steps of the process we fine art photographers go through the minute your session or wedding is over.

I have to be honest with you all—Mr. Powder Puff is not all that involved with wedding planning. He helped pick out the venue and date, but when his eyes would glaze over while I was discussing shades of white, I figured that he might not be the type of guy to give a lot of input into the nitty-gritty of the planning process. So we had a discussion, he told me he trusted my judgment, and I told him he was released from his taffeta prison.
Lo and behold, after a few months of planning, the mister told me that actually, there was one thing he wanted complete and total control over—our first dance.
Now, if you know anything at all about me, you know that I am, above all, a control freak. A major, uptight, crazy control freak. So when Mr. Powder Puff told me that he wanted to surprise me with our first dance song, I panicked a little. On the inside, of course.
“Um… are you sure about that?” I asked, tentatively.
“Yeah, I really want to pick it. It’ll be romantic!”
“Okaaayyyy…” I agreed. Change is good, I told myself. Surprises are good. This will be good, and I can relax and let the man pick a song. It’s only a song!
Over the months, though, I have not been able to sit back and let this issue go. At all. Every chance I get I “casually” suggest songs. “Ooo, this would be a great first dance song!” Or, the much more subtle, “You know, this would make a wonderful song for our first dance…” Every time, I’m met with a rebuff. “It’s a surprise,” he reminds me, “I can’t let you help me.”
Humph!
Here are my ideal suggestions for a first dance.

We’re bringing the Wiki of the Day back with a snazzy new icon!
Wiki entries have been particularly helpful when someone has a question on the boards about popular wedding items like the candy buffet, or bathroom basket, or out of town bags. It’s really an underutilized resource for just about everything weddings in one place!
Today’s Wiki is photo booth. This has been a popular trend for awhile, and shows no sign of going away because guests get to take home a fun favor, and the bride and groom get to keep photos of their guests! What’s not to love!
Please click on over to the Photo Booth Wiki and share your tips and ideas for our wiki of the day:
If you’re unsure how to get started, check out this wiki article on how to edit a wiki. It’s much easier than you may think — we promise! ![]()
While the guys were goofing off next door, we were taking the matter of getting ready very seriously… NOT.
When the girls came over to our suite around 10 AM, I was already putting hot rollers in my hair. I was crossing my fingers that it would turn out as well as it had in my DIY hair trial, but you never know, so I gave myself lots of time. Plus, call it a sixth sense, but I just knew that there would be some last things to take care of that I hadn’t planned for. I didn’t want to be rushing around too much.
Here I am with my maiden sidekicks (R to L) MOH Pepperpot, SIL and Miss P, soon after they arrived.

Congratulations to the winner Emma S.!
