While browsing the internet for wedding thank you card ideas, I stumbled upon a photo that I immediately fell in love with.

Amazing, huh? After seeing the photo, I had to have a photo like that. There was one little catch though: there was no way that I was going to pay over forty dollars for a painted paper parasol. So, I did what I do best, and made one for under ten dollars.

So, I recently did a wedding cake “round up” of some of my favorites on the web - cakes with a modern twist and the ability to really showcase black and white in a great way.
Also at top of mind is how to really make our cake topper shine - I mean, it’s a mini version of us up there, so we must have the most fabulous pedestal around!

Our cake tasting is scheduled for mid-March at Chicago’s Sugar Syndicate. I continue to hear nothing but raves about the cakes that are created there… so I’m already drooling!
But most importantly, I can’t wait to have a bit of a brainstorming session after the cake has been pushed aside (or, you know, devoured… whichever comes first).

I’m a girl who’s gotta have a backup plan under the best of circumstances, and leaving the details of my bouquet to the whims of our rose garden (I say “our” with a bit of irony, since our only contribution is likely to be that we manage to kill them weeks before our wedding) makes that doubly true.
Plan B was always to beg our neighbors to let us have our way with their flower bushes, but I think I’ve found a better backup plan, and they deliver.

Yea, baby, I’m sending myself flowers!
I love clutches. I obsess over them. Much like Miss Stiletto, who found a great wedding clutch on Etsy, I have been looking at clutches both for myself and for my bridesmaids.
The bridesmaid splurge: if I could afford it, I would buy each of my bridesmaids one of these clutches from the Etsy shop of Red Ruby Rose. They are $75 each and are amazing.

Earlier I left off having left Mon Amie and stopping for a much needed lunch break.
The next store we went to was The White Dress in Corona Del Mar. I’d say between Mon Amie and The White Dress, every designer you could possibly think of is covered. Maybe not… but very close, if you are looking to cover your bases in two trips.

The White Dress is a beautiful store. The sales people were very friendly and I was quickly greeted by Ariana. We browsed dresses, and picked many different ones to try on. Many of the dresses were at the higher end and beyond my budget (Vera Wang), but I still appreciated oohing and ahhing over the dresses.

I will never forget the first time I received flowers (sorry Mr. J, but they were not from you). It was a lush bouquet of peach roses lightly tinged with pink. Even after they wilted, I picked off all the petals and kept them in a jar (hmm, maybe this story is more about the boy who gave them to me and less about the flowers themselves). Anyway, flowers have always been meaningful to me and I knew they would play a special role in our wedding. It was a challenge, however, finding a floral designer who shared our vision and worked within our budget.
We were so lucky to have Eddie of Commerce Flowers. Our online research returned glowing reviews of Commerce and the proposal they provided was well within our budget. The best part, however, was working with Eddie. He went above and beyond to make me and Mr. J happy– I truly felt as though he cared about our wedding. Even with the vague and constantly shifting guidelines I gave him, he produced magic on our wedding day.
My wedding bouquet: pure white peonies tied in thick white satin. I’m so glad I went with an all white bouquet. It didn’t compete with the rest of the florals or the colors in my lengha. The soft peonies just shone all on their own.
What to do, what to do. I’ve been in two weddings and had my makeup done for each. I have the crease-less Asian eyes with microscopic eyelashes. What throws some makeup people off is the downward slope of my eyes when I smile. They usually apply heavy eyeshadow toward the outer edges to achieve the upward illusion. In most cases, it’s a tough sell for me because I come out feeling as if I’ve been punched in both eyes.
I take the Amy Winehouse black eyeliner approach to achieve the illusion of bigger eyes. It kinda works. :D So here are the before and after pictures of my makeup experiences. The second one was the best smokey eye application ever attempted, but it was a still a bit heavy for my taste. For what it’s worth, it came out great in pictures. The third picture is my first (and only) experience with fake lashes. I wasn’t a fan of the yellow eyeshadow, but the lashes I likey. They’re so much fun!

So for all you makeup experts out there, what advice can you offer to creaseless girls like me? ![]()
I guess it’s safe to say that I’m feeling a time squeeze right now, especially since this is the number staring back at me on my super-duper, 100-day wedding countdown desk calendar from The Knot:

Yep, 89 days to go and I have so much stuff to do!
But today, I didn’t get too involved in thinking about all the tasks I need to complete. Instead, my thoughts turned to this question: Who will be there for me in my time of need?
It’s 6PM, 30 minutes into my weekly Bosu class. At this point, my legs feel like Jell-O and I’m checking the clock every 5 seconds willing it to go faster. I put my head down and press on… and suddenly feel an extra jolt of energy. My arms pump harder, I add a little hop to my step and…what’s this? I’m even singing along to the song coming through the sound system. The source of my new found energy? “Umbrella” by Rihanna.

Yup, I love Rihanna and her umbrella. I know it was totally overplayed back in 2007, and I, too, have fallen victim to the so-annoying-but-ever-so-catchy “ella ella” that you just can’t get out of your head.

WHERE WE HAD LEFT OFF:
NOTE: As usual, my recap photos are from a variety of sources (father, family, friends, florist, me, and some from the “photographer”). All post-processing has been done by me with each individual’s consent and permission. You can see an example of a “before” picture here.

Gingerly stepping over the pre-wedding debris littering the stairway and every floor, we picked our way downstairs. Already doubting the skill of my photographer (he was chosen, long-distance, on the recommendation of a friend at the very beginning of my engagement when I didn’t know any better), I selected the living room and asked my bridesmaids to open all of the blinds and curtains on the lower floor. Light is SO important to photography; I knew that if I was going to have a chance of saving the photos after the wedding, I was going to have to combat the increasing gloom outside first. I asked our ’photographer’ if we could do some of the getting ready shots that I had suggested in previous emails (complete with sample photographs). He looked at me blankly. Someone hadn’t done his homework. I asked him to take some photos of my bridesmaids doing up the buttons on my dress, and he obliged, peppering his workflow patter with sexually harassing comments.
