Rose Ice Cubes - Great Idea!

March 1st, 2009 @ 11:00 am by Mrs. Apple Cider

How amazing are these? Should I make them for our wedding? Wouldn’t they be great for a shower or bridal luncheon? Found on the amazing Vintage Glam blog, these ice cubes incorporate spray roses and are made with your typical ice cube tray.

(original idea by Jonathan Fong Style)

For detailed directions check out this post on Vintage Glam’s blog. Imagine the possibilities!!

(Jonathan Fong Style)

What you’ll need
(per ice tray):

  • 12 spray roses (the small ones)
  • Budget Tip: spray roses can be pricey. Consider using small silk flowers from the Dollar Tree.
  • 12 twist ties
  • 2 wooden skewers
  • 1 ice tray
  • Floral tape

Check out the directions here.

How could you incorporate these into your wedding? Do you get as excited as I do about new DIY projects?

So pretty and versatile! Bring spring and summer warmth and color to a cool-weather wedding, or winter’s cool icy blast to a warmer season!

Oooh. Nice in concept. Might be a leeetle scary in person. Like a garden in your glass. Gardens can have bugs, thorns, dirt….eeek.

LPC, I wouldn’t use them in individual drinks - I think they’re meant for an ice bucket for champagne or white wine, like in the picture.

I really like the idea of using a rose-ice bucket as an alternative to floral decorations in a buffet line, for example, or as a casual centerpiece alternative.

You can buy food grade rose petals, they are grown without pesticides. I used them when I made rose flavored truffles they came out well. I also saw on food network the other day someone who used them by coating them with pasteurized egg whites and then coated them in sugar and then put them in an oven that had been heated and then turned off. So it was like candied rose petals.

Here is the link to the food network recipe, it appears down a little on the page.

Those are very cute! Lovely idea for a DIY honeymoon champagne bucket! (We can’t all afford the Ritz!)

These could look really pretty floating in a clear vase! I am not sure people would be open to drinking from a glass with flowers in it once they began to melt though.

I am not sure I’d want this (albeit lovely) floating in a glass of mine.

Now I did a few years ago for a party an ice bucket/wine holder with pansies in it. Pansies are edible btw.

Or maybe a sprig of mint frozen in an ice cube? Be fabulous for a mint julep!

Putting raspberries in is a great, similar colored, edible alternative. Using distilled water helps it freeze clear, as does turning down the temperature on your freezer so it freezes more slowly! (Oxygen and other gasses dissolved in water getting trapped causes white or cloudy ice)

Aha. In the ice bucket. I get it. Thanks for clearing that up!

Pansies would be lovely.

That is such a pretty idea! I think the raspberries, mints and panseys are great additions too!

Don’t use silk flowers from the Dollar Tree! That’s just not a good idea. You don’t know what chemicals those flowers are manufactured or coated with, and you certainly don’t want your guests getting sick!!!

Use the mint idea, pansies, or nasturtiums or food-grade roses.

The last thing you want is to poison someone inadvertently.

Roses are edible as well.

Maybe so but a thorn isn’t. And the blooms are so much larger..I wouldn’t really want a large flower in my glass. A small rose is still larger than a tiny pansy (not the large variety mind you).

They look cute, but they aren’t practical. Are people really supposed to use them in their drinks. They may be legitimately edible, but that’d be completely unappetizing to me. If you just want to use them as decor on the drink table or something of that sort, I think they’re awesome.

I love the frozen roses!
That is so creative.
That would be perfect to surround any dish with appetizers that you want to stay cold.
I bet you could use different kinds of molds to get even more creative. I think they have different shaped silicone ones that might be easier to get the ice out of.

Brady is right. Drinking anything with fake plastic flowers in it is disgusting and unhealthy, not to mention tacky. Might make a nice addition to a punch where people can avoid putting petals or flowers in their drink if they want.

i don’t think the ice cubes are meant to be used in drinks. strictly for decoration only.

I love this idea!! I think the ice cubes would compliment a Bridal Shower! If you plan on making them for your wedding, the good thing is you can make them months in advance
