Do-It-Yourself Tiered Stands

March 2nd, 2009 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Stiletto

I swear I think that half of my blog posts have been about this darn candy buffet we’re doing as our favor! It started out long ago as something simple and fun to do, and has spiraled into a point of complete obsession for me!

The other week I found this great black cake stand for a steal on Amazon - I love it and will easily use it post-wedding! Then I happened across an Amy Atlas post where every cake stand/bowl/platter was black, pulling everything together.

Fabulous, true inspiration at last! But where do I find all of these fabulous black elements without breaking the budget?

It seems almost impossible to locate different pedestal dishes and cake plates that will add depth and interest to our display… in black, that is. White, or any other color of the rainbow? No problem. But black for whatever reason does not seem to be a happening color for displaying desserts.

I came across a post on Cake Journal for a do-it-yourself tiered cupcake stand. Coming across this project again has saved the day (well, not this specific day - on this day I’ve cut myself off from buying things for the wedding for at least 24 hours). Round cake boards that are used by cake decorators are both cheap and sturdy.

Source: Cake Journal

On Sugarcraft (where I’ve often ordered baking supplies) you can buy heavy duty masonite cake boards for next to nothing:

  • 8-inch round: $2.59
  • 10-inch round: $2.99
  • 12-inch round: $3.19

Sugarcraft also has styrofoam cake “dummies” that you then can cover with ribbon and use to separate your tiers:

  • 4-inch high x 5-inch diameter: $2.50
  • 4-inch high x 6-inch diameter: $2.99

So for just $15.00 plus the cost of ribbon, glue, and paper or fabric to cover the cake boards, you have a 3-tier stand that matches your wedding colors/theme perfectly! I’m thinking about buying extra black and white damask fabric, which I’m planning on having on the tables, to cover the cake boards with. Since I’m already going to order the fabric for the tables, it’ll be easy just to add on a couple of yards.

I can’t wait to put these together! However, since my mom hasn’t been able to do a lot of projects with me (due to my obsessive I-have-to-do-everything-now nature), I’m going to save this as a project for when I visit in the next month or two. Besides, she’s way craftier than me!

Now I’ll just have to decide what to load up onto the stands… I’m afraid this is turning into more of a dessert buffet than a candy buffet, but since it’s our wedding it can be whatever we dream up! But I think I could easily pile on some bright green candies (I loooove gummy candy) onto the tiers. How gorgeous would that be?

What are some creative ideas for candy buffet display that you’ve seen?

Our candy buffet is going to be nothing about our wedding theme but rather our heritage…all the candy are going to be our favorites from Puerto Rico..The Mr and I both wanted to share with our families and friends the candies that we grew up on! So we actually hit up Pier One and found all different shapes and sizes of jars, candles holders, and bowls on clearance!! I will be jazzing them up with ribbons and other decor items.

Giant martini or wine glasses — I’ve seen them at AC Moore!

Great post, thanks for the tutorial! I have been looking for a black cake stand for our wedding cake, but our baker won’t use anything but a platform, and I haven’t seen a single one in black. I am also looking for a white square ceramic pedestal that is at least 14″, but cannot find anything. You would think it would be easy to find a white square cake stand!

If you type “black cake stand” into the search function on eBay, over 30 items come up, so I would suggest starting there. Black glass and porcelain were a lot more popular in the 40s and 50s, so you should be able to find candy dishes and pedestal stands in antique stores as well. And, if you see something that is a real bargain somewhere else, and is just not the right color, I have two words: Spray Paint.

@suzanno:
Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the prices for cake stands tends to be outrageous!

These DIY stands are so great because it’s a minimal investment, they can be customized, and you don’t feel bad about tossing them after the event ;)

There is a great follow up article to Amy Adam’s recent spread in Food and Wine posted here with a few tips for creating lovley display items. http://perfectbound.blogspot.com/2009/02/what-color-is-your-menu.html

My favorite tip, “When she couldn’t find extra-tall stands for a table, Atlas attached platters to ornate black candlesticks with a glue gun. On the table, she keeps low trays toward the front and higher vases and stands toward the back and sides.” photo here: http://www.foodandwine.com/slideshows/dessert-table-tips/10

Very cute ideas!! You may consider buying the multi-colored tiers that you want and using a polymer-suitable spray paint to make them black. They have different textured spray paints too so they don’t have to look like you’ve painted them!!

Black spray paint! Find any cake stand you like and use black spray paint. I am using spray paint to make a really custom look for my centerpiece containers. Nowdays you can get some really great finishes with all of the specialty paints.

I’m stacking my jars and bowls with styrofoam blocks under a big table cloth.

Here’s my blog post with all the inspiration (inspired by your original blog about candy buffets!) There’s a picture of my setup at the end.

I love the idea of black stands and anything inspired by Amy Atlas is wonderful. Look at this DIY post from once wed on cupcake stands. They are a little smaller, but you can personalize so easily and even add a little bit of a pattern.

They ( I don’t know who ‘they’ is ) make some apple flavored gummi ring candy that is green & white and covered in crystal sugar (more sweet than sour)
Just an example: http://www.bulkfoods.com/pictures/2494.jpg

Also, Do you think it would be realistic or possible to find cheap cake platters in whatever color and paint them black? You could put a circle of black/white damask on top to protect the food from the painted surface.

Our candy buffet is inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we are using that theme in our signage and bags. Your DIY stand sounds great!

I love the Amy Atlas dessert table designs, and overall they seem pretty easy to replicate. That particular table is one of my favorites — I love the yellow and black.
