Hair and Makeup Trial

March 2nd, 2009 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Crab Cake

Today I was supposed to take my bridal portraits with our photographer, Kristian. Unfortunately, she went into pre-term labor a few weeks ago, and has been stuck on bed rest since. I feel for her; I could not tolerate bed rest. She and the baby are doing well, and she’s no longer in labor.

So, I had already scheduled my hair and makeup trials for today and I went anyway.

I had a little printer malfunction (no colored ink) and wasn’t able to take any inspiration photos to my hairdresser. But, I was able to verbalize what I wanted, and I think she did a pretty good job.

1

‘Sup? Here I am with no makeup… eew. Solid proof that I love the Hive.

2

3

4

So, there’s the hair. It’s not as vintage as I wanted, but I love it anyway.

5

And the makeup. I think my eye makeup is a little lopsided. That’s okay, it’s just a trial. This was a great experience, and I’m certainly glad I did a trial. She listened to everything I had to say about what I thought I wanted. It felt a little heavy, but I think it was because I was wearing jeans and t-shirt and it made me feel like I had too much on.

As I sit here writing this post, I’ve napped on that hairstyle and I’ve cleaned house in that makeup and it’s all (mostly) still there. Mini CC’s response when she saw me this afternoon was, “Mommy, you look gorgeous!”

Excellent…

So, what do y’all think? Vintage enough?

I love the hair, but the make-up is definitely a bit heavy. Why so much eyeliner?

I love the hair too! But I’m not so fond of the eye makeup. I think it could be a lot softer.

I think you look beautiful! The hair is very soft and natural. I agree with you about your makeup feeling heavy because you are wearing jeans. In your dress, I think you will look very glamorous. Glad you had a good experience!!

I love the hair too! Your makeup is great even though the eye shadow seems really heavy, but it could really be because you are in tshirt & jeans right now.

did they do your makeup there too? i’m contemplating going there for the big day….but it’s kinda the complete opposite side of town from everything, as i’m sure you know!

I think the heavy eyeliner is great and a definite throwback. The red lipstick really adds to the vintage glam. Your hair is so pretty!! Great short-do up-do!! I love that your daughter loved it!!

I think the shadow just needs a bit more blending up top, other than that everything looks fab!
Love the hair!

Your make-up looks great!
I have a hard time with make-up…I feel like it is always too heavy.
But I realize that we need it like that so we will photograph well

I think you look great and I think it will look FAB in your pictures!

i think the lighting and angle might be making your eye makeup look darker than it is.

I loved the hair…I’m using it as inpiration for my own style. (grow, grow grow!) I’ve got a couple inches to go still.

I agree with a lot of the ladies. The eye makeup is a little too dark. I think that with the lovely color of lipstick and the blush, that all you need is a light gold shimmer. It would make your eyes pop. On a more positive note, your hair looks great!!

Aren’t little ones the best. I think it might be the angle but you are right that your eye makeup looks loopsided. Also it doesn’t look like you used flash. Just remember that on camera it will look different.

I don’t think your photos are giving us a very good representation. Taking a photo of yourself inside your car is giving you very heavy shadows above your eyes. It makes your eye makeup look MUCH darker than it probably actually was. If you were to take the exact same photo standing outside, we would be able to see what it looks like much better.

I love the hair, as in really, truly love it.
Mu first thought was that the eye makeup was a bit much, but two things later hit me: I didn’t realize at first glance that you were going for a vintage glam look, in which case the eyes and rid lips are great. And two…you’re in your car in a t-shirt, not dolled up for your wedding, which definitely makes a difference!
I love Mini CC’s comment!

I think you look goooorgeous! I don’t think the eye makeup is too heavy, considering its a random snapshot in your car. You WANT to look like you, all dolled up, for your wedding day. And I think you do!

I think that your lips and cheeks are pretty neutral (because even though your lips are red, its not a crazy dark red), so you want your eyes to pop.

And MiniCC’s comment is as true as they come!

I love love your lip color. It’s so pretty. I feel like the brown eyeshadow is either too heavy or not blended up well. It kind of looks like it abruptly ends. I like the eyeliner though, looks vintage to me.

Thank you all for your comments. I wasn’t terribly crazy about the abruptness of the eyeshadow. I’m definitely going to have her blend it some more.

@Hayley: It’s completely the opposite side of town, but I wouldn’t trust anyone else! Yes, they did my make-up too.

@MagPie518: It’s gingersnap by bare minerals. I loved it too and will definitely be purchasing it.

If you want vintage hair try soft finger waves on the top and have your hair gathered on the side kinda like you have it but to the side. Your eye makeup would look more balanced if it was a bit lighter on the bottom - and add some false lashes to the top. This is very vintage looking. Add some earrings and you are set.

Ooo, your hair is gorgeous. So shiny! I love it so much.

I think that the makeup artist did a beautiful job on your skin - did she use all Bare Minerals products? If so, I HIGHLY recommend using Philosophy’s On A Clear Day underneath. It keeps the powder right where you want it. (Of course your makeup artist has a good primer, I’m sure, but just in case!)

On your eyes: I think that the brown color in the crease needs to be blended more into your brow-bown. I don’t think that it’s too heavy - especially for an evening/dinner event (oh, and your WEDDING of course). However, you might consider not lining your bottom lashes at all but going pretty heavy with the eye-liner on top. The reason for this is that liner on the bottom will make your eyes appear smaller from far away (like in portraits). Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet always do the vintage makeup look well. Check out these photos to see what I mean. Also, any search for Audrey Hepburn will give you some more inspiration. Are you opposed to fake eyelashes? They can look very natural and beautiful when done well, and they’ll definitely make an impact on your wedding day!

Marion Cotillard also does vintage makeup sometimes. She’s got liner on the bottom here, but it’s very light and only goes half-way:

http://makeupbag.net/wp-content/uploads/marioncotillardoscars.jpg

But see how much smaller her eyes look here, when the inner-rim of her lid is lined on the bottom?

Anyway. Wow. I love makeup. Sorry to ramble. You look gorgeous and it’s great that you’ve got some clear ideas of what you want to keep and what you want to improve. :)

You look great!! I think makeup leans on the more heavy side, but for pictures, I believe you need more make-up so you won’t end up looking washed out in photos. I can’t WAIT to do my trial :). I still need to decide on a look!

I love the hair, but think the eyeliner is too heavy, particularly on the lower lids.
