About Mrs. Pineapple

Hi hive! Long time, no see! I owe you all a thousand recaps of what was a truly amazing day for Mr. Pineapple and me. Unfortunately, my photographer still owes me the hundreds of images required to share our day with you. We have received our watermarked and low-res proofs, but they are just not high enough quality to share. I hope to get the full-res photos very soon, for your sake and mine. :)

If you want to really honeymoon in my hometown, you are welcome to pitch a tent by the lake on the farm where we live. However you will be limited to eating what you can cook over a fire, or traveling 15 miles to dine in at McDonald’s. Clyde, PA may not be an ideal honeymoon spot, but there are wonderful getaways outside of Pittsburgh in rural western Pennsylvania.

One of my favorite spots to spend the day or weekend is Ohiopyle State Park. There is something for every couple at Ohiopyle: camping, whitewater rafting, and hiking for the adventurous, and resorts, tours, and fine dining for those looking to be pampered.

Just outside the state park is Frank Lloyd Wright’s famed Fallingwater. This home was designed and built for the Kaufmann family. After you take a tour of this stunning example of American architecture make sure to stop by the cafe. “Why?” you ask. “Do they have amazing food?” you wonder. I don’t know, I’ve never eaten there, but I did design a large exhibit about Fallingwater that is permanently installed in the cafe. :)

Where to stay:

If you are looking to camp and truly have a honeymoon with just you and your honey, in Ohiopyle there are a variety of sites, from very primitive, to “modern” ones, with electricity and restrooms/showers. You can find more information on booking a site on the Pennsylvania State Park website.

If you want somewhere to stay that has a bed and a roof, here are a couple places near Ohiopyle and Fallingwater:

The Summit Inn Resort has been housing guests since 1907. My friends are getting married in the barn at Fallingwater and have reserved a block of rooms here.

After our minimoon in Cleveland, I have become a big fan of Bed and Breakfasts. The Stonehouse Inn looks lovely and romantic.

If you really want to be pampered, you can check out Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Nemacolin has a spa, golfing, skiing, fine dining, shopping and more. Really, you would never have to leave the resort.

Are you planning a rustic honeymoon?

My parents love visiting Falling Water and the other Frank Lloyd Wright houses in the area (that are open). I’d love to see the Nemacolin in person one day :)

I love Nemacolin Woods and FLW’s Falling Water! We actually stayed at the boutique hotel on grounds called Falling Rock, and it was amazing! You get your own butler! The spa is also fantastic!

Mr. Bucknell and I went to Nemacolin for a retreat with his company, and it was absolutely beautiful. I only wish we had had more time to spend there!

Fallingwater and Nemacolin are awesome! For my fiancee’s b-day we headed out to hike Ohiopyle, took a tour of another FLW house (Kentuck Knob), had lunch at Nemacolin (a little more cost effective than dinner), and then visited a local winery for a tour (Christian Klay). The whole weekend was a blast - I really recommend it! There are a ton of neat B&B’s in the area too, and a great French restaurant, Chez Gerard.

I may be visiting pennsylvania this summer, so it’s good to see a few highlights. I’m not sure how close it is to the area, but the Fallingwater is a palce I have read about and always thought it would be cool to see in person!

We’re honeymooning in rural PA! Unfortunately … I handed the job of planning it over to my FI and now he won’t tell me anything! All I know is that it’s in PA and near some body of water, and likely near a theater. I wonder if I can’t weasel some more info out of him as the wedding gets closer ;)

I am so excited to see this! I spent a lot of my childhood just 15 minutes away from FW and Ohiopyle. In fact my mom lived at Ohiopyle when SHE was a kid, before it was a state park. If anyone visits the area, I would strongly recommend the tiny town of Confluence, about 20 min away, and a beautiful drive. They have a wonderful restaurant where you can eat on the porch, and an antique store where you can get AMAZING stuff.
