About Mrs. Powder Puff

Hi hive, Mrs. Penguin here! Last night we launched our “Honeymoon in My Hometown” series with Miss Peep Toe’s amazing post on San Francisco!  Throughout the next couple of weeks, the Bees will be sharing with you all the awesome things that their hometowns have to offer.  I’ll let Miss Powder Puff take it away with her great post on Western Michigan!

~~~
There is a serious of commercials out right now that make me tear up every time. No, I’m not talking about the Sarah McLachlan, tug-at-your-heart-strings-with-cute-puppies ASPCA commercials. I’m talking about the Pure Michigan commercials.
Huh? There are advertisements promoting Michigan, of all places? You betcha! Grab some tissues and check it out:
OK, it might be just me that gets teary-eyed by these, but I love my home state! Many people don’t realize how absolutely beautiful Michigan is, especially Western Michigan. So, if you’re looking for a place to relax with your honey before or after the wedding, you’re in luck! We are creeping up on the perfect time to visit. And being the Midwest, things are cheap, cheapy cheap! Hooray!
So, here comes Miss Powder Puff’s official guide to visiting Western Michigan!
Where to Go
There are a lot of beautiful cities in Michigan, but one of my favorites is Grand Haven. It’s about a two-hour-drive from Chicago, and has a quaint, artsy feel. It’s right on Lake Michigan, and has some absolutely beautiful beaches. In fact, the movie American Pie II was set in Grand Haven, and they filmed a couple of scenes there. I have also had some good times there…
Among other things, Grand Haven is a fabulous place to DANCE!
Where to Stay
Grand Haven has some absolutely fabulous beach cottages and charming little bed and breakfasts that are within walking distance of the beach and downtown.
Boyden House Inn
I would recommend visiting the Pure Michigan Website for more information on hotels in the area.
What to Do
Of course, the beaches are a major draw. They’re beautiful—soft, clean sand, miles of shoreline, fun boardwalks.
Grand Haven boardwalk. In the summer, little ice cream stores and cute shops are open all along here.
Shopping downtown is also fun. There are a ton of cute shops with handmade items by local artists.
In the evenings, local bands will play in the little grandstand area right on the water. Once nightfall hits, the most interesting feature of Grand Haven comes out to play- the musical fountain. What’s a musical fountain? Well, simply put, it’s a fountain that puts on a light/spraying water show to music. Seriously, this is a weird attraction that can only be appreciated in person.
Performances begin in May, and they’re free, so if you’re in town, you should seriously check it out.
If water and music aren’t your thing (maybe you prefer alcohol and music, eh?) then there are some cute bars/restaurants that might catch your eye. The Kirby Grill is a great place. It features fun atmosphere, with local bands performing on the weekends. There’s an upscale chophouse side of the place called The Grillroom, if you’re interested in more of a romantic evening out. The food is really yummy (the company that owns these restaurants is catering our wedding, in fact!).
If you’re looking for more of a dive bar, the Tip a Few Tavern is fantastic! It features cheap drinks, GREAT Mexican food, and a very diverse crowd. We head over there every time we’re in town.
So, to review: Michigan is awesome, and you should definitely visit!
Are you planning on taking a minimoon with your fiance before or after the wedding?
These are my all time favorite commercials!! I can’t believe someone else is also getting teary-eyed at them. I’ve even contacted the puremichigan to tell them how great I thought they were (Yeah, maybe I’m crazy). But in case anyone is wonder the soundtrack is cider house rules and Tim Allen narrates most of them (hehe).
But, my fiance is from traverse city- another beautiful spot in Michigan and our first date included the grand haven light house! Cute Post. Thanks!
Yay Michigan! We are so much more than cars and La-Z-Boys. Northern Lake Huron is absolutely breathtaking, and the UP has so much to offer for a quiet, romantic vacation.
I love Grand Haven, and we are planning our minimoon for either there (or Saugatuck, Miss Taffy!) before the honeymoon because I LOVE MI in the summer and we have four days to kill between the wedding and leaving for Italy!
yay for Kirby’s Grill…I was there this past summer, yum.
But don’t forget about the Coast Guard Festival!!…the best thing about Grand Haven :-)
Girl, please, you are not the only one who tears up watching those commercials ;) I’m not always proud to be an American, but I’m always proud to be a Michigan girl! Pretty sure I bleed Great Lakes water ;)
Oh, and for all you bees out there who are into camping, da UP (and upper West MI) has some of the most beautiful, clean, and fun campgrounds in the states! Message me if you want recommendations!
Somebody should do a spotlight on Mackinaw Island. For people from Michigan, it might seem over-rated, but people from out of state seem to love it.
@Miss Taffy: Ooo, Saugatuck is super cute! You’ll have a great time!
@LatteLove: LOL! How could I forget about that!? The Coast Guard Festival is almost deserving of its own post. Good times, good times…
@diorable: I’m glad someone got it! I love me some Sufjan Stevens!
I’m a Michigan girl thru and thru! My fiancee proposed on the pier at Grand Haven so it has a special place in my heart! My family vacations every year at the very tip of the thumb in Port Austin- it’s nothing fancy, but I love it. And you can see the sun rise over Lake Huron and set over the Saginaw Bay standing at the same spot on their amazing pier. There are so many great beach towns here :)
If you’re looking for a tiny town with a lot of mini-moon appeal, I’d look at Bete Gris (pronounced Bay da Gree), Michigan. Cute touristy stuff to do but also small and just very majestic.
Go Blue! :) It’s nice to see Michigan shown in a positive light for once! I adore Grand Haven. My FI and I try to go at least once a year to get away and relax. We are getting married on Mackinac this May :) Michigan will always have my heart!
@Victory B.: The great mitten of the north- LOVE it! One of my friends calls Michigan “America’s high five” which I love as well. :)
@Kara: It’s a great state, isn’t it? I miss home a lot too! Here’s hoping you come back soon! :)
Michigan is the best–my hubby and I are both from Michigan and were married there. We live in California now and I hate when people think Michigan is just another flat, midwestern state. It is so incredibly beautiful, and I think many of the beaches rival those in California!
I also adore the state of MI. My husband and I did a Lake Michigan circle tour for our honeymoon. We spent 2 nights at Boyne Mountain (it was in December); 1 night in Sault Ste Marie, MI; 2 nights in Marquette, MI; 1 night in Sturgeon Bay, WI; 2 nights in Milwaukee, WI; and 1 night at Notre Dame, IN before coming back to Muskegon, MI (our starting point). The best part about not have to pay for expensive flights is that we got to splurge on the nicest rooms/hotels and eat at wonderful restaurants.
Yay for Michigan! I was just there three days ago. I grew up in Holland, MI so I’m very familiar with the western part… Grand Haven included!
Hooray, Michigan! I grew up in the Detroit area, am currently living in Lansing, but my heart will always rest in the Grand Traverse Bay area. Two weeks every summer for the first 19 years of my life and I left a bit behind every time I left. I haven’t had a chance to go with FI yet, but I’ve made him promise to take me soon!
We’re actually planning on visiting a part of Michigan for our honeymoon! We’re going on a road trip to Chicago to Milwaukee to Green Bay and then to Mackinac Island! I was there once before when I was 7 or 8 and have always dreamt about going back. It was so pretty and I loved the fudge (the things a little kid remembers…)!
I love love love Michigan, I’m from IN but my family has been going to northern western michigan every summer for twenty years. The Petosky/Harbor Springs area is my favorite, beautiful views with lots of things to do, take a drive or ride your bike up the Tunnel of Trees, be sure to stop at the Goodhart store and go all the way to Cross Village and Legs Inn. Tons of cute little B & Bs, and a lot of the area is very secluded, check out Blisswood Lodge, and the Blisswood Music Festival in the summer.
Mackinac Island is wonderful too, Beaver Island is cool but much more secluded.
Ah I cannot wait to go there this summer!
I have to say- I think Tim Allen and those Pure Michigan commercials are the best thing that ever happened to the Mitten state (as I like to call it). Those commercials make me want to turn my car around and head up north right that moment! I have seriously been on the verge of tear! LOL Score one for Michigan!
I’m very proud of my home state and I too get teary eyed when I hear them on the radio. I always want to turn my car north. Good thing I’m only 4 hours from the Michigan border in Cincinnati Oh but I’m a long 9 hours from the UP, where I spent the first 20 years of my life.
Getting married on Mackinac next Oct. Should be in the height of fall colors. Think I’ll put this ad on our wedding website.
