Some Surprises Along the Way!

March 2nd, 2009 @ 5:16 pm by Mrs. Ballet Flat

There have been some things that I’m noticing in my weight loss journey that I really take for granted on a day-to-day basis. I’ve lost almost 20 lbs. so far and 9.25 inches off my body (which is SUPER cool), but besides the obvious, here are two BIG things that I’m watching change pretty quickly!

The biggest thing is my engagement ring. That sucker no longer fits. It will fly off of my finger very easily, and well, we can’t let that happen. I was thinking of just wrapping tape around the band on the palm side to make it smaller, but I discovered Ring Snuggies at Wal-Mart and I’m in LOVE!

Obviously, that’s not my ring, but you get the picture. These little temporary soft plastic inserts take in your ring down a whole size, and right now, even that’s a little loose on me. It’s crazy how I’ve gone down a whole ring size in a little under 20 lbs. lost so far!

Another thing I noticed was at DSW.

I went shoe shopping for some new ballet flats (which I wear everyday to work… hehe). I’m usually a 9.5/10 shoe size and two different brands of shoes fit me in a size 9! I never thought my feet looked fat, but obviously, there was some blubber hiding in my feet! So weird!!

Have any of you brides noticed any surprises in your weight loss journey that weren’t scale or tape measurement related?

I have the ring snuggies, too! I have noticed that my ring isn’t as tight, but while I’m sure my slight weight loss is part of the reason, the cold weather makes my fingers shrink. I wear the snuggie if I’m going to be out in the cold or need to wear gloves. They work very well!

Oh, there’s definitely fat pads on your feet, so when I dropped a ton of weight in high school, I went from a size 10 to a size 8…in shoes.

With as much weight as you’ve lost, you’re going to need to get measured for a new bra, too–partly from fat reduction on your front, but mostly from fat reduction on your back.

Congratulations!!

Oh Ms. Ballet Flats! That is amazing! Congratulations on the weight loss! More importantly, I think it’s amazing that you are using your wedding as an excuse to live a healthier lifestyle. That in the end is what’s important.

Congrats on the 20!! Woo! I am still trying to loose and it has been going so slow! I totally thought the shoe size thing was weird too. My friend lost tons of weight and all of a sudden we didn’t wear the same shoe size anymore her feet shrunk!! I had no idea these things happen!

Great Job. I to am a dieting bride and my wedding band which we got last April no longer fits and falls right off. I was joking with my mom about how there were a million and one other places i would have loved to lose some weight before i ever mentioned my ring finger.

I too have noticed the shoe thing! I can wear socks inside some of my shoes now (they’re huge!) I’m also worried that I’ll have gone down a ring size, I hope my fat fingers will save me LOL!

That’s awesome!
Are you going to get your ring resized? My FH got my ring initially a little too big, so we took it down a half size. It was done in a day and now fits perfectly!
Keep up the good work!

I have lost about 9″ overall and the samething my ring will just spin on my finger and slip off at night…I had to be the plastic ring guards also just to make sure that nothing happens to my ring.

I wish I had known about those!! I lost my college ring a few weeks ago b/c my fingers have shrunk and it literally must have slipped off somewhere :-( I have been EXTRA careful with my engagement ring since them, I don’t want to get it resized until I’m sure what size I’ll need!

lol i my ring with the snuggie for two months because right after we got engaged was all the holiday parties, xmas, new years, and then i felt lonely when he finally left for iraq, and then v-day. its great, it was pretty comfortable and better then the thing the “butterfly?” it squeezes the ring on the sides.

Congrats! And thanks for pointing out where to get the plastic ring snuggies — I’ve got, um, “reverse hourglass” fingers (read: huge knuckles), so once it’s on, my ring’s a spinner. I’ll be getting “balls” (like Miss D’orsay’s) after the wedding, but want a dot-free ring for photo opps.

Thanks for the tip–I’m having my ring sized down but these would be “insurance” against it slipping off in the meantime. Congrats on the weight loss–your dedication to your plan has really been awesome!

I dropped 25 lbs a couple years ago and noticed the exact things you’re bringing up. I never thought my feet would change sizes from such a small amount. Congratulations on your weight loss- you’re an inspiration to other brides wanting to do the same :)

When I lost a bunch of weight a few years ago, the thing that surprised me most was having to buy all new undies! Even though I was fully prepared and excited about the prospect of buying new jeans, the idea that my comfy cottons wouldn’t fit me anymore never entered my head.

Oh wow!! Thanks everyone for the really awesome comments!! You guys are really driving me towards my goals! :)

@Miss D’orsay: It’s totally OK…you aren’t cruddy! We have weddings to plan, so I understand if you are busy!
@ladybugleon: I’m doing Weight Watchers right now, and also working out 3-5 times/week mixing kickboxing classes with strength exercises and elliptical!
@MoSnow: I will right before the wedding, because I’ve heard too many resizes can make your ring weak. So, I’m putting it off as much as possible!
@Miss Taffy: It sure is!! I’m sure my coworkers think I’m weird since I keep one on my bulletin board!
@Amy: I’m totally excited about regular sized underwear shopping! I keep watching my measurements next to VS’s and just watching those numbers get closer and closer! I can’t wait to be able to shop there!

Oh yeah, I’ve totally noticed that. It’s great to see the little things. Congratulations!!
When I was in high school I was at my peak weight and wore a size 9 or 8.5 wide shoe; not to mention, my class ring was like a 7.5. NOW: years later, 60 lbs lighter [for about the last 7 years], my shoe is a 7 or 7.5, both regular width, AND the last ring I bought for the same finger, is a 5.5. Crazy I tell you!

First off, congrats on the weight loss! Its a great feeling!

I too have lost 20 pounds, and have noticed both the good and the bad.

No more bulge on top of pants - YAY!
No more butt to nicely fill out pants - BOO!
No more back rollies - YAY!
No more boobs to put into bra - BOO!

I guess you cant win them all.

Ps. Congrats once again :)

Ha Ha. Those were exactly the same things I noticed (well, I wasn’t engaged when I first starting losing weight, but in the little bit I’ve lost lately, I noticed it). I went down a size and a half in shoes! How do those wedding heels of yours fit???
