Bee Generations

March 3rd, 2009 @ 2:03 pm by Mrs. Bee

We often get questions about how we decide on new Weddingbee generations, so I thought I’d go into how it all started. :)

We first started with the insect generation since I’m a bee.  When we started to think about future generations, we tried to keep these general rules in mind:

  • variety of color/design so the characters are easy to differentiate (herbs and leaves for example would be confusing)
  • categories where we could have at least 10 characters
  • characters that we think users would want to be
  • characters that are somewhat wedding related (we finally broke this rule with the most recent generation of baby animals)

With that in mind, generations following the bugs included: flowers, fruits, gemstones, vegetables, candy, birds, desserts, tropical/exotic fruits, beverages, hors d’oeuvres, shoes, makeup, and baby animals.

In the past, we thought Bees selected specific characters because they were cute.  Based on the feedback we received on the shoe and makeup characters, we thought they would be wildly popular.  But Bees that weren’t super into shoes or makeup opted to choose characters from the previous beverage and hors d’oeuvres generations instead.  I absolutely loved the stiletto character and was surprised that it took so long to be snatched up.  But when I thought about it, I’m definitely not fierce enough to be a Miss Stiletto, so I realized that Bees were selecting characters based on how they could identify with them personally.

We’ve already mentioned that dog breeds are going to be our next generation, and I’ve been receiving emails from readers asking me to “reserve” a certain breed for them because their wedding is too far for them to apply!  I think it’s so sweet!

So instead of asking you what our next generation of characters should be, please tell us… if you could be any Bee character, what would you want to bee?

There should be more sweets! Desserts are so wedding-y, in my opinion.

Also, sauces and garnishes like olive oil and honey (hehe) would be cute — little glass bottles or cruets could each be a different shape/size!

I would want to be Miss Ribbon. I’m obsessed with ribbon and bows and ribbon is EVERYWHERE for our wedding. Plus, who doesn’t love a good, colorful sash ;)

I would love to be a bee! Mine would be a platano or a pilon, some congas, etc since I”m from the Dominican republic. I would have fun with it.

I would love to be Miss Starfish, or something beachy. I think it would be fun to do seasonal items, a set with about three options from each season?

How about kitchen appliances? Miss Stand Mixer would be representing (in my opinion) one of the best registry items!

Geographic terms would work well, but I think you’d have to be careful that no one ended up with Ms. Continent or Ms. Swamp….!

Good question! I would be Miss Eyelet, or one of the shoe icons already being used, like Ballet Flat or Peep Toe. So cute! Surprised no one has taken Miss Mascara yet…

Have you considered destination characters? Bees could choose their honeymoon locations, like Miss Paris, Miss Bermuda or Miss Mediterranean!

Anyway it wouldn’t apply to me cause I’ve been married for 4.5 years.

I’m not sure if you guys have done fishes and sea creatures yet, but I don’t mind to be mrs. crab

I love to bake - it’s so obvious! I’d love to stay as Miss Rye Bread ;) (I promise I’ll bake fresh sourdough rye bread for everyone ;) )

This is a great post. Hands down I would be Miss Maltipoo!! I always say she is the best “purchase” I have ever made. There is nothing that brings us greater joy than her little squeaks, sounds and her huge personality. My FI even complained there were more pictures of her in my cube than of him!

If I had to pick a dob breed, I would be Ms. Fench Poodle. This breed is so lady like. I am such a lady, it fits me perfectly. If I could chose any name, it would be Ms. Justice. I am a second year law student, so my career aspiration is to fight for justice for all.

If I were to choose my own I’d want to be something sporty/outdoorsy like Miss Snowshoe. But I don’t think that would make for a very popular series…Miss Paddle, Miss Hiking Boot, Miss River Raft? Miss Tent? Miss 70L Pack? Those aren’t exactly attractive names.

But seriously, a snowshoe icon would be soooo cute!

For your beachy theme you should put in Miss Hammock. How cute would that be?

I loved the suggestion of fabrics/materials a while back - I think names like Miss Silk, Miss Satin, Miss Organza, etc would be so cute!

I’m too far along to be a bee but I would have Miss Sparkle since I love anything that sparkles!

I would so be Miss Seahorse if you did sea creatures! I used to be obsessed with them. Oh well, too late now!

@Newport Nuptials & @Mrs. Bee: I also vote for Beach Items :)

@MagPie518: Totally was going to recommend kitchen appliances too!

I had no idea there was a system. ^_^ I totally just thought Bees picked what went with their personalities or wedding best.

I like the food ones, best, honestly, because they say so much about the Bee. ^_^ I think I would be Miss Barbeque. Or Miss Hot Wings. lol.

But I like the beachy theme and dog breeds ideas! Cute.

I love food so seriously miss cheescake since I it has a sweet and savory element to it. Like a ying and yang, it was the first thing that came to mind and its one of many fave desserts and I can relate to the two different elements but they go well together.

You know Mrs. Bee, I honestly would not want to be a dog breed. I’m just not much of a dog person! I’d rather be a wine (Miss Bordeaux!), or a pattern (Miss Argyle!), or a color (Miss Pink or Miss Burgundy!). There are still a few months left before I apply though…maybe all the dog breeds will be used up by then? :P
