About Mrs. Spring Roll

Almost Official

March 4th, 2009 @ 12:26 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

Mr. Spring Roll and I are one step away from officially becoming husband and wife. Last week we made the trip to the Clerk of the Circuit Court, and walked out with our license to marry.

I was, and still am, surprised at how easy it is to get a marriage license.

We simply had to fill out our general information, and raised our hands swearing that our information was correct and that we were willingly getting married. We then paid $93.50 in cash, and now have to wait three days to marry.

How much does a marriage license in your state cost?

Ours was $30 in rural-ish Illinois. I imagine it’s more expensive in Chicago.

In our home county in Wisconsin it’s $110! Which was one of the reasons we decided to get married in Illinois instead.

Yikes. In Ottawa, ON Canada I’m going to have to fork out $150 smackaroos for one. It’s valid for a period of 3 months, only. Interesting to know there is such a price discrepancy. :(

In Londonderry NH, it cost 45 bucks. Not sure if it varies by town or county. $94 bucks is pretty damn steep!!

We don’t even need an officiant (Colorado). I was surprised that we could sanctify our own wedding!

In Virginia it’s $35 and you can get it same day. My dad is actually the clerk of court so we don’t even have to go to the courthouse. . just my living room to get our license!

We’re in Denver, and it’s $10… a couple can solemnize the marriage themselves, eliminating the cost of an officiant. I knew $10 was cheap, but til I read some of these other states’ fees, I didn’t realize how good you have it in CO

In Texas it’s $60, and you have to wait 3 days and it’s only good for one month…but, they just started a program where you go to an 8 hour pre-marriage class that waives the $60 fee and the waiting period. While 8 hours of my (and the FI’s) time isn’t necessarily worth $60, I’m hoping the class is full of good information!

I’m from south Africa and we dont have anything like a marriage license. What is it exactly? Permission from your state to get legally married?

What we have to do is take a copy of our ID’s and any marital contract we’ve drawn up and thats it…

In Massachusetts, we thought we had to apply at the county seat where it was $60, but fortunately I did a bit more research and found out we could apply three blocks away from home, for $35. Random! Cheaper than a fishing license, too.
