Because of Mr. K’s school and Army obligations, he can only take one week off for our wedding. And because we wanted to be able to spend the wedding week enjoying the Cayman Islands with our friends and family, we planned the wedding for the last few days of his break. The only problem is that this doesn’t leave us room for a honeymoon! Mr. K and I will have a grand total of two days and two nights alone together before we go back to the real world. In order to get the most out of this time, we are staying in the Cayman Islands and have dubbed our little vacation our “Minimoon”.

Napa–a perfect minimoon destination for Californians!
The Minimoon
A minimoon is a weekend or long-weekend length vacation for newlyweds (or even for couples that need a getaway due to the stress of the wedding!). This is a great option for couples who either can’t afford or don’t have time to take an extended vacation after their wedding. Usually the minimoon destination is near the couple’s hometown, making it a convenient and relatively inexpensive alternative to a lengthier and more extravagant honeymoon. Because Mr. K and I are getting married in the Cayman Islands, our minimoon won’t require extra travel, making it an economical option for us. And even though it will only be a few days long, we are really looking forward for those lovely, calm few days where it will be “just us”. Minimoons have been increasing in popularity over the past few years. Considering our country’s current economic state, I expect 2009 to be a popular year for minimoons!

The Honeymoon
In contrast to the minimoon, a “honeymoon” is the more traditional, longer vacation taken by newlyweds to celebrate the start of their married life in isolation. Popular honeymoon spots for Americans include Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, and Italy. Although Mr. K and I are taking a minimoon after the wedding, we are also going on the traditional honeymoon as well—about a month after the wedding. We decided to wait until Mr. K’s classes are over so we can take a two week vacation. Shortly after this vacation, Mr. K and I will be separated while he spends the summer training with the Army and I study for the bar, so it was really important to us that we take some time to get away before the summer-long separation. We will be going to Italy, and because neither of us has ever been before, I think two weeks will be the perfect amount of time for us to take in the sights and rest up before I start studying for the bar in mid-May!

The Babymoon?!
No, Mr. K and I aren’t planning a “babymoon” any time soon! But the concept of a babymoon has been brought to my attention during the wedding planning process! One of my close friends will be six months pregnant when we get married, and she is coming to the Cayman Islands with her husband for their “babymoon”. A babymoon is a vacation serving as a “last hurrah” for expectant parents, allowing them to relax and reconnect as a couple before entering (or re-entering) parenthood. My friend will be at the end of her second trimester when she comes to the Cayman Islands, so after the trip she won’t be allowed to travel by air. Our wedding weekend will be her and her husband’s last chance to go somewhere exotic before they have the baby! I love the idea of a babymoon! Why should newlyweds have all the fun?!
