Honeymoon/Minimoon/Babymoon?

March 4th, 2009 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Kitten

Because of Mr. K’s school and Army obligations, he can only take one week off for our wedding. And because we wanted to be able to spend the wedding week enjoying the Cayman Islands with our friends and family, we planned the wedding for the last few days of his break. The only problem is that this doesn’t leave us room for a honeymoon! Mr. K and I will have a grand total of two days and two nights alone together before we go back to the real world. In order to get the most out of this time, we are staying in the Cayman Islands and have dubbed our little vacation our “Minimoon”.

Napa–a perfect minimoon destination for Californians!

The Minimoon

A minimoon is a weekend or long-weekend length vacation for newlyweds (or even for couples that need a getaway due to the stress of the wedding!). This is a great option for couples who either can’t afford or don’t have time to take an extended vacation after their wedding. Usually the minimoon destination is near the couple’s hometown, making it a convenient and relatively inexpensive alternative to a lengthier and more extravagant honeymoon. Because Mr. K and I are getting married in the Cayman Islands, our minimoon won’t require extra travel, making it an economical option for us. And even though it will only be a few days long, we are really looking forward for those lovely, calm few days where it will be “just us”. Minimoons have been increasing in popularity over the past few years. Considering our country’s current economic state, I expect 2009 to be a popular year for minimoons!

The Honeymoon

In contrast to the minimoon, a “honeymoon” is the more traditional, longer vacation taken by newlyweds to celebrate the start of their married life in isolation. Popular honeymoon spots for Americans include Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, and Italy. Although Mr. K and I are taking a minimoon after the wedding, we are also going on the traditional honeymoon as well—about a month after the wedding. We decided to wait until Mr. K’s classes are over so we can take a two week vacation. Shortly after this vacation, Mr. K and I will be separated while he spends the summer training with the Army and I study for the bar, so it was really important to us that we take some time to get away before the summer-long separation. We will be going to Italy, and because neither of us has ever been before, I think two weeks will be the perfect amount of time for us to take in the sights and rest up before I start studying for the bar in mid-May!

The Babymoon?!

No, Mr. K and I aren’t planning a “babymoon” any time soon! But the concept of a babymoon has been brought to my attention during the wedding planning process! One of my close friends will be six months pregnant when we get married, and she is coming to the Cayman Islands with her husband for their “babymoon”. A babymoon is a vacation serving as a “last hurrah” for expectant parents, allowing them to relax and reconnect as a couple before entering (or re-entering) parenthood. My friend will be at the end of her second trimester when she comes to the Cayman Islands, so after the trip she won’t be allowed to travel by air. Our wedding weekend will be her and her husband’s last chance to go somewhere exotic before they have the baby! I love the idea of a babymoon! Why should newlyweds have all the fun?!

We’re mini-mooning, and honeymooning!

I know it sounds a little excessive but after our wedding near Chicago, we have 4 days before we leave on our honeymoon flight to Italy. Mini-mooning in either Saugutuck, MI or Grand Haven, MI is cheaper than staying downtown for 4 nights, and it’ll be the perfect little relaxing time before we head out sight-seeing and traveling in Northern Italy.

Due to time constraints like you, we’ll be mini-mooning in the gulf islands of Canada right after the wedding! Then next year (when we have more vaca days saved) we’re going to Morocco, Spain, and France for a month or two ;)

I have a few “dream” honemyoon spots, I’f we could do anything, I’d like to do two weeks, a week right after the wedding in the carribean, not sure where, just somewhere with a beautiful beach, to help us relax, then a week in Disney for some fun before going back to the real world. FI has limited time off too, so I don’t thin we could get time for the wedding weekend (he works weekends), plus two weeks.

I’d also love to go to Greece, Germany, Lithuania, or Turkey.

I like the babymoon idea too!

We would love to go to Fiji for our honeymoon. But budget wise that just cant happen especially if we want to get a house. So instead we are doing a 5 day cruise and then driving to Vegas and to Grand Canyon

We will probably do a minimoon too! We will probably do our honeymoon about 5 months later because of taking time off of work and timing of our honeymoon. We are going to Nepal to the annapurna trek, and since our wedding is in the winter we have to wait until the summer to go there.

BTW- good luck on the bar exam :) Good idea to get married right before it. I couldn’t imagine doing it shortly after the Bar. I would be distracted from studying with wedding thoughts! (although it would be a nice bar-vacation).. I went to Vegas with my Mom :).

we are taking a “familymoon” It didn’t seem fair to leave the kids after becoming a “family” So we will be taking a night to ourselves after the wedding, but then the kids have to be at school Monday morning, and with a family business to run I will need to be at the office Monday morning as well. The tentative plans are to leave town Wednesday morning and head to DISNEYLAND as a family. We will spend Wed-Fri with the kids there, then they will go to their Dad’s for the weekend and Mr.B and i will have a couple days at the beach before we head home.

@Miss Ballet Flat: cruises have rules about being pregnant on their ships (and babies under 6 mo). so make sure to check those out in a few years!

Is it bad that we’re not married yet and we’ve already decided about when we’re going on a babymoon? :p He wants to take me to Hawaii, but I’d be just as happy exploring the West Coast or backpacking in Europe. Not entirely realistic for a preggers lady, I suppose, but it would be fun to go on one last adventure before our family expands :)

We are also doing a minimoon, or 2 days of stress free relaxation as I like to call it! I am in grad school and for some reason (what were we thinking!?) we decided to get married in October, which is the middle of my semester. We are going to Asheville, NC, which just a couple hours from my where my wedding will be. Hopefully we will later take a trip to South America after I graduate!

Can I minimoon today?

We’re honeymooning at an all inclusive resort in Jamacia because it’s really important to us to be able to relax (and budget for how much we will spend).

I love the idea of a babymoon. . . in a couple of years!

I am doing the minimoon. We only have a week we can take off work-wise, and we’re getting married across the country from where we live- so our wedding is in the middle of that week. We are just going to spend 2 days, 3 nights near the wedding location. Later though, we will be taking an actual honeymoon, which is exciting. All of our vacation time is spent visiting family so to be able to take a “real” vacation is soooo exciting!

We were going to go to Italy as well but like you said, times are tough and money is non-existent. So instead, we are going local and spending a week by the sea, and then next year we will go to Italy for our 1 year anniversary.
