Florist & Flowers?

March 4th, 2009 @ 9:27 am by Mrs. Duckling

One of the things I’ve been working on is researching florists for the wedding. I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to flowers, so I’ve been slowly learning and researching more. Yesterday I was reading Weddingbee PRO and came across this great post by Nancy from Nancy Liu Chin Designs. She broke down all the different components of flowers that you need and how to best research what you’re looking for. She also talks about how to approach florists.

Here’s a blurb from the post:

A floral arrangement is a hand crafted, custom product and it varies in price. The components in pricing wedding flowers are:

  • Creativity
  • Quantity and quality
  • Seasonality of flowers
  • Color of the flowers
  • Holidays - supply of certain flowers during peak holidays increase
  • Fixed costs of a business
  • Labor and design costs
  • Delivery and setup
  • Materials
  • Props, rentals, containers, supplies
  • Customer service
  • Exclusivity of a designer
  • Travel costs

This was exactly what I needed, since I’ve been researching florists recommended by Courtney and other sources all week.

I wanted to know more, so I commented on her post with this:

“Thanks for sharing all this information. I’m currently researching florists and have no idea where to start when I contact them. Would it be a good idea to send an email and answer some of those questions when I initially contact the florist?”

Sure enough, I checked my email later in the day, and Nancy had emailed me back! How amazing is that? I was so surprised and grateful! Here is what she said:

IMO, I think that all brides should do some research. Go to the websites that I recommended. Look at the flowers. Flip through magazines. Get some idea of what you are looking at.
Then, search the florists in your area. Look for the details. Pinpoint 3 to 5 florists that you want to meet with. I personally think that meeting with more than 3 is just too many. When I got married, I saw 4 people, and that was confusing enough. I might have contacted 5, but I only made an appointment to see 4 of them. And frankly, I could have only seen 3!

Afterward, call or email them and ask some general questions… first:

1) Are they available?
2) Is anyone else looking at the date? If you don’t ask, you might miss out on someone really great.
3) Make a floral consultation. And don’t miss it. Be courteous.
4) Bring information to your meeting
5) Look at their work not to see if you find something you want, but for their capabilities
6) If you like them, ask for a written proposal.
7) Ask them how long the proposal will take.

Finally, if you really really like a florist, try to build a great relationship from the beginning. Don’t try to “nickel and dime” them. Because just as you have a choice in selecting a floral designer or florist, they have the right to work with whom they want. It’s one of the hardest lessons in life, but one I learned early. Be kind. Be nice. Be direct. If you cannot afford the florist that you want, be honest with them and tell them where you need to be. Make them try to find a creative solution, but don’t do it in a way that they think you are negotiating with them.
Also, try not to pick the florist that you want b/c of price unless they meet your criteria… I have had many friends who selected their florists b/c of price, not because of their creativity. It took more energy to explain what they wanted in the end. Ultimately, they might have gotten the flowers at a great price, but the look was just not right.

Thanks Nancy!!

Looks like I have some work to do, right? I’m definitely using Nancy’s tips and I will keep you updated with how it goes. I just thought I’d share the useful information and show you just how awesome the wedding blog community can be when you ask a question.

Have you found your florist? What was helpful in your search?

Another tip I learned is to find florists who specialize in events/weddings, rather than a brick-and-mortar florist shop. Often event florists have lower overhead and are able to give you better rates.

my florist is my aunt…who’s been a hobby florist/gardener for most of her life! She asked if I wanted help and grow almost all the flower I’m looking for, in her backyard! (we won’t use all her flowers…but it’s good to know she’s worked with almost everything I’m looking for).

The best part is she knows me and understands firsthand the inspiration I’m looking for in my wedding!

Hope you find the perfect florist! (and when you do let me know so I can pass it on to my FMIL for my San Diego 2nd reception!)

I found a florist, but she said her supplier wasn’t able to get tulips because they were out of season. I offered her my alternative (and online wholesaler I love) and now I’m able to have the florist I love with the flowers I want!!

My fiance’s aunt, a florist / landscaper in Chicago generously (GENEROUSLY) offered to do the flowers for our wedding as her wedding gift to us. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with!

I’ll admit though, the process has been a little awkward. When someone is gifting you a service for your wedding, it’s hard to balance asking for what you want, versus being grateful and understanding about what they can actually do. But it’s worth it in the end to have someone close to us be such a meaningful part of our day.

We found our florist last summer and our very thankful we did. Originally we met with one florist and her price was RIDICULOUS!!! Plus everything I said that I wanted she did not do! Our quote came back with a bunch of ridiculous items that we didnt want and the things that we really wanted were not there!

I did some searching on my own and even looked at Silk Flowers. When we met with our florist we just clicked! She is amazing and her work is unbelievable!

I can not wait to met with her before the wedding to have our final meeting.

@Duckling- I just found my florist! It was one of my more stressful negotiations, actually. I feel like flowers make or break the decor, and so many of these talented folks have their own vision that seemed to be superceding mine.

Plus, florals are expensive! I put this task off until the last minute (with 4 months left), which I wouldn’t recommend to anyone… but I lucked out and got an amazing florist with amazing prices!

Flowers are my #1 stressor, for some odd reason! I have no idea what to do. I don’t want to spend a ton of money, so that’s not helping things…grr…

I’m planning on using the floral design teacher from my old high school, where my mother also works. She’s done many weddings for the other teachers’ kids, and she only charges for the materials. My mother says her work is beautiful and creative, but I haven’t seen it or met with her yet, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out.

I went last week to a friends wedding, and the arrangements were amazing, green orchids even decorating the cake, I was amazed, and I called her to ask where did she bought the flowers and she said that she bought on line, through a company called Fiftyflowers, so I will definetely call them

@Miss Quiche: i’m right with you. they stressed me out like crazy! i didn’t know that flowers would be so expensive, but when you multiply 1 centerpiece by 15 or 16, it makes sense.

thanks for posting nancy’s tips. i ended up going with the florist that really GOT my vision. she suggested different ideas and options that i loved, without me having to spell it out for her. makes me feel at ease knowing that i totally trust her to create something i’ll love for the wedding.

My parents have been in business for years and so our hometown florist is giving us a great deal. . . like flowers at cost + design fee!

She was upfront and honest with us and told us that most florist mark up flowers 305%!

I did what Nancy said - I found some florists in my area and made appointments to see them.

I think your first impression of a florist is very important. The first appointment I went to left me feeling extremely uneasy…we had the meeting at an old wooden table with dirty chairs in the MIDDLE of her workroom! The floor was littered with water and dead flowers and stems. It wasn’t great at all. I told her my budget and 2 weeks later I was quoted almost double what I could afford.

Thankfully in the meantime an online friend recommended her florist to me and what a difference that meeting was! We sat outside, have a cup of coffee and she actually had a form with set questions that she asked me - from what feeling I wanted for the wedding to how big my bouquet should be. She was fantastic and I booked her the next day.

I must say, when I got her quote (well within my budget) I was overjoyed and so excited to see what she comes up with!

Have fun and MOST importantly, trust your instincts!

Great and helpful post Miss Duckie, thank you!
Did I miss this or did you book your florist yet? If so, may I ask who since our weddings are so close?
