Narrowing Down the Dogs

March 4th, 2009 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Bee

I posted Part 6 of The Story of Mr. and Mrs. Bee over on PRO last night. :)

According to the American Kennel Club, these are the top 13 most popular dog breeds in America.  I’ve listed 13 since we’ll only select either the lab or the golden, and shih tzus and miniature schnauzers didn’t really come up as suggestions from you guys.

  1. labrador retriever
  2. yorkie
  3. german sheperd
  4. golden retriever
  5. beagle
  6. boxer
  7. dachshund
  8. bulldog (or french bulldog)
  9. poodle
  10. shih tzu
  11. miniature schnauzer
  12. chihuahua
  13. pomeranian

In addition to the breeds listed above, here are some more popular suggestions you made:

  1. pug
  2. husky
  3. corgi
  4. basset hound
  5. cavalier king charles spaniel or cocker spaniel
  6. dalmation
  7. jack russell
  8. sheep dog
  9. maltese/maltipoo
  10. bernese mountain dog
  11. boston terrier (oops I’m late in adding this one!)
So please help us narrow it down and pick your 10 favorites!

My favorites out of this list are the GOLDEN RETRIEVERS and the CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS. Both of these dogs are adorable and would make the cutest icons!

My other 8 recommendations for the icons are:
Yorkie
Bulldog
Poodle
Pomeranian
Chihuahua
Pug
Maltese or Maltipoo
Dalmatian

These aren’t my favorite breeds, per-say, but I think they would make adorable icons and adorable bee names!!!!

a pug and dachshund would make adorable avatars!

I would also suggest not choosing both the beagle and bassett hound, as the coloring might make them difficult to distinguish.

i think you only need to have one of the shit zhu, poodle and maltese…and I’d go with poodle!

I’m with Jo on choosing the beagle or bassett hound…and I”d go with beagle.

Dalmation would make a GREAT icon! (especially for a firefighter bride/groom!)

Since I have two Golden Retrievers myself they’re hands down my favorite breed for my own reasons, but really I encourage you to choose the breed that will fit your lifestyle the best. The life-span, health problems, exercise and attention needs vary greatly between the breeds listed in your top ten, and it’s very important these qualities are taken into consideration when picking your dog. With that said, I wish you guys the best in finding your perfect fuzzy pal! :)

After owning many dogs over the years (and help with fostering dogs), I suggest:
- bulldog (very loyal)
- sheep dog (affectionate, easy to train, great manners, best with kids IMHO)
- beagle (a little harder to train, higher energy)
Not on the list:
- doberman (not hard to train, protective, and very loving, great with kids)
- Great Dane (dual purpose - mini horse!, great with kids, easy to train)

I love labs (we’ve had 3), but they are block heads.

Hey Mrs. Bee! I fancy myself quite a dog expert, having owned many different breeds over the years. Are you and the hubs getting a pup? If so, keep in mind the NYC lifestyle and how difficult it will be to have a large dog in the city!

My favorite breeds are the pug, springer spaniel, king charles, rottweiler, and of course, my little rescue mutt Bruce Banner who is half chihuahua, half minpin. :)

Hmm.. I would definitely stay away from the hyper breeds and the work breeds since you live in the city. Lots of energy + close quarters and no yard = lots of chewing and hard to train.
Also consider some other behaviors. I have a bulldogge and he is super stubborn.. it’s a charming quirk about their breed. If you don’t have experience with dogs this would be a negative. Also consider shedding. All dogs shed but some shed more than others. My childhood dog was part German Sheppard part malamute.. I’ve never seen a dog shed so much as he did. It was insane!

I could write a novel on the merits of why the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be selected for the next Bee, but I will spare any cat lovers the intimate details of my love of this dog breed (you’re welcome!). I am the proud owner of two affectionate and intelligent Cavaliers that, at 15 and 19 pounds, still maintain the audacity to try to protect us from any large dog that comes near our home from their perch at the front window. The only problem? Most of the time they sneak in a nap while on guard duty. Cavaliers are curious, (see one of my monsters at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HRBnGSrF8g), sensitive to others, and overall, excellent in long-term committed relationships :-) Just like a Cavalier, Miss Cavalier would be similarly warm and loving, thrilled to be curled up on the couch, catching up her faithful readers on Weddingbee.

In case it isn’t clear, my vote is for the Cavalier… for now I will continue to dream of eventually becoming Miss Cavalier ;-)

I know that no one could change your decision but I would recommend looking into English Bull Terriers. They are amazing dogs. There is a great breeder that I could put you in contact with if you were interested.

We have a 3 year old male and he is by far the best dog i have owned. We are thinking about getting a second one. They are very smart, loving and well tempered dogs.

As a proud golden retriever owner, that’s my choice. They are versatile, active, funny, loyal, WONDERFUL with kids and other animals, do well in just about any environment, and a great friend. I was always a ‘big dog person’ since I grew up with a German Shepard mix and a Golden Retriever. My fiance and I live in an apartment right now so we picked a french bulldog and she certainly has a big dog personality in a small dog body. She comes everywhere with me because she is so small (19 lbs) and still runs with the big dogs at the park. She’s a little ball of muscle. Frenchies have the best personality and are so loveable! Pick a frenchie!

Since noone can argue that mutts make the best dogs, why have to narrow your choice down to one breed? Try to find a combination of some of the “most voted for” breeds. Its easy on http://www.petfinders.com. The website links about shelters around the country and you can search by breeds. Its how I found my baby……border collie/bernese mtn dog mix. p.s. Can’t believe border collie didn’t make the list. Smartest and cutest by far!

I think the more distinctive-looking the breed the better.

A little late to the party but…

A dalmation icon would be soooooo cute!!!! but I’m a little partial. We had 2 when I was growing up :)

I like the beagle, bernese, corgi, boxer, daschund, yorkie as well.

I would say from personal experience, a lab or a German Sheppard. Both are extremely obedient smart and good with kids. Plus, they are good companions and walking dogs. My littlest one (lab) is extremely playful and cute think marly and me without the extreme hijinks ^^!
