I posted Part 6 of The Story of Mr. and Mrs. Bee over on PRO last night.
According to the American Kennel Club, these are the top 13 most popular dog breeds in America. I’ve listed 13 since we’ll only select either the lab or the golden, and shih tzus and miniature schnauzers didn’t really come up as suggestions from you guys.
In addition to the breeds listed above, here are some more popular suggestions you made:

Pomeranian = #1!!
Gotta love those little fluff balls that are always smiling!
Please have german shepherd. NOTHING is cuter than a german shepherd puppy falling over it’s giant feet.
Shih tzus are the BEST dogs, hand-down. It is a crime that no one has said so already.
I have 2 yorkies and they are hilarious little dogs- always ready to cuddle!
Shih Tzu!!! So smart, wonderful happy personality, adorable little face, and a perfect companion in an apartment. I have never been a dog person before my Bobo, and now I just can’t imagine life without him!
Oh you have to use Dalmatian! That would make the CUTEST icon!
yorkie
golden retriever
beagle
dachshund
poodle
chihuahua
pomeranian
pug
husky
dalmation
We have 2 mini schnauzers and they are the best! Very smart and easy to train!

Here’s my top 10!
German Shepherd
Golden Retriever
French Bulldog
Corgi
Husky
Sheep Dog
Bernese Mountain Dog
Shih Tzu
Chihuahua
Pomeranian
My favorites out of this list are the GOLDEN RETRIEVERS and the CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS. Both of these dogs are adorable and would make the cutest icons!
My other 8 recommendations for the icons are:
Yorkie
Bulldog
Poodle
Pomeranian
Chihuahua
Pug
Maltese or Maltipoo
Dalmatian
These aren’t my favorite breeds, per-say, but I think they would make adorable icons and adorable bee names!!!!
It’s a sign that it’s meant to bee! http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2824118/2/istockphoto_2824118-dachshund-puppy-biting-flower-pot-side-shot.jpg
a pug and dachshund would make adorable avatars!
I would also suggest not choosing both the beagle and bassett hound, as the coloring might make them difficult to distinguish.
My top ten, in no particular order (well, aside from number 1)!
bulldog/bulldawg
lab
golden
beagle
husky
dalmation
pug
boxer
poodle
basset hound
cavalier king charles spaniel!!!! maltese!!! husky!!!!
Love Lab retrievers, but my dog-child shelby is a german shorthair!
i think you only need to have one of the shit zhu, poodle and maltese…and I’d go with poodle!
I’m with Jo on choosing the beagle or bassett hound…and I”d go with beagle.
Dalmation would make a GREAT icon! (especially for a firefighter bride/groom!)
You can even have two types of pugs: black - my favorite and fawns.
Pug gets my 1 to 10 votes!
Sorry…one more! http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2824003/2/istockphoto_2824003-dachshund-puppy-biting-flower-pot.jpg
How could you not pick this little face? http://churchfun.com/images/wp/hotdog.jpg
Or this one: http://nicepetsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/dachshund-resize.jpg
Clearly, Jack Russells are the best dogs ever! Loyal and full of energy!
Since I have two Golden Retrievers myself they’re hands down my favorite breed for my own reasons, but really I encourage you to choose the breed that will fit your lifestyle the best. The life-span, health problems, exercise and attention needs vary greatly between the breeds listed in your top ten, and it’s very important these qualities are taken into consideration when picking your dog. With that said, I wish you guys the best in finding your perfect fuzzy pal! ![]()
Err…I guess I should have said in the breeds listed, not your top ten.
My bad ![]()
We just got a new puppy! He’s a Mini Schnauzer!
SO CUTE!
After owning many dogs over the years (and help with fostering dogs), I suggest:
- bulldog (very loyal)
- sheep dog (affectionate, easy to train, great manners, best with kids IMHO)
- beagle (a little harder to train, higher energy)
Not on the list:
- doberman (not hard to train, protective, and very loving, great with kids)
- Great Dane (dual purpose - mini horse!, great with kids, easy to train)
I love labs (we’ve had 3), but they are block heads.
1. Yorkie
2. Shih Tzu
3. Pug (or Puggle!)
4. Maltipoo
5. Labrador Retriever
6. Bulldog (or French Bulldog)
7. Golden Retriever
8. Poodle
9. Pomeranian
10. Miniature Schnauzer
I have to vote for the Boxer! We have two, and they are the most fun dogs! So silly!
We have a corgi… we love him, but he’s VERY energetic! If you’re interested, be ready to be running around like crazy!
Aww I love puppies! Ok, here is my Top 10:
1. Dalmatian (apparently it’s -ian, not -ion?)
2. Chihuahua
3. Bulldog (or French Bulldog)
4. Poodle
5. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Cocker Spaniel
6. Beagle
7. Pug
8. Golden Retriever
9. Yorkie
10. Boxer
After #1, there is really no order. I just think a Dalmatian pup would be so cute!
labrador retriever
german sheperd
bulldog
poodle
chihuahua
pug
corgi
basset hound
dalmation
sheep dog
Hey Mrs. Bee! I fancy myself quite a dog expert, having owned many different breeds over the years. Are you and the hubs getting a pup? If so, keep in mind the NYC lifestyle and how difficult it will be to have a large dog in the city!
My favorite breeds are the pug, springer spaniel, king charles, rottweiler, and of course, my little rescue mutt Bruce Banner who is half chihuahua, half minpin. ![]()

1. Labrador Retriever (yellow :))
2. Miniature Schnauzer
3. German Shepard
4. Beagle
5. Dachshund
6. Dalmation
7. French Bulldog
8. Dalmation
9. Yorki
10. Jack Russell
I can’t wait to see what is chosen!
I like the second list of 10 with the minitaure schnauzer, yorkie, golden retriever and pomeranian in place of the basset hound, bernese mountain dob, sheep dog and corgi.
My top 10 (for potential cuteness of icons):
shih tzu
labrador retriever
beagle
dachshund
poodle
chihuahua
corgi
basset hound
cavalier / cocker spaniel
dalmation
Hmm.. I would definitely stay away from the hyper breeds and the work breeds since you live in the city. Lots of energy + close quarters and no yard = lots of chewing and hard to train.
Also consider some other behaviors. I have a bulldogge and he is super stubborn.. it’s a charming quirk about their breed. If you don’t have experience with dogs this would be a negative. Also consider shedding. All dogs shed but some shed more than others. My childhood dog was part German Sheppard part malamute.. I’ve never seen a dog shed so much as he did. It was insane!
I vote for Bernese Mountain Dog! I’m a little biased, I mean my Stan is the most handsome pup - check out my avatar - how could you say no to that face??!!
1. poodle
2. maltipoo
3. pug
4. labrador retriever
5. golden retriever
6. beagle
7. french bulldog (a lady with a bite!)
8. shih tzu
9. pomeranian
10. dalmation
Lab (chocolate), pug, and beagle!!! I think a pug would make a really cute and easily identifiable icon ![]()
Dachshund! Since Boston Terrier isn’t there, the rest I’m not too worried about. But I do agree with LatteLove that only one of certain types of dogs should be picked.
Why are some people commenting as if you want to BUY one of these dogs? Did I miss something?
Here’s my fav~
1. Golden retriever
2. Labrador retriever
3. german sheperd
4. shih tzu
5. pomeranian
6. husky
7. corgi
8. pug
9. cavalier king charles spaniel or cocker spaniel
10. maltese/maltipoo
You have to have pug and frenchie in the list, they are adorable and have short names.
German Shepherd (I’m biased, as my sweet baby dog is a G.S. :))
Yorkie
Beagle
Dalmatian (would be a super cute icon)
Dachshund (also SOO cute!)
Jack Russell
What??? No westie???
Of those, here are the 10 I’d pick in no particular order: Lab, Yorkie, German Shepherd, Dachsund, Poodle, Mini Schnauzer, Pomeranian, Husky, Corgi, Maltese
does this change your mind?
http://www.zazzle.com/my/images
Lab
Corgi
Maltese
yorki
beagle
pomeranian
jack russell
dalmation
german shepard
husky
Just sort of funny that the bred the Obama’s picked (portuguese water dog) isn’t listed in the top 10 or in people favs. Usually the prez picks a popular breed.
Dalmatian! Esp. if either of the couple happens to be a firefighter =) Yorkie, Beagle, Jack Russell, Siberean Husky, Pomeranian, Mini Poodle, Maltese and Pug top my list
yorkie
golden retriever
dachshund
french bulldog
shih tzu
pomeranian
pug
husky
cavalier king charles spaniel
maltese/maltipoo
=) ahh i just love dogs
You say we didn’t suggest shih tzus, but we did! And several blogging bees have owned Shih Tzus. That’s my number one choice.
If you had Bernese Mountain Dog, I would really consider breaking my promise not to apply to be a Bee, and would go for it… That’s how much I love them!
Cavaliers are adorable too, but a distant second to my beloved Bernese.
jack russell all the way!! Miss Jack Russell would be so cute ![]()
1. Yorkie
2. Yorkie
3. Yorkie
…..
10. Yorkie.
Can you tell i love my Yorkie!
1. Poodle
2. Yorkie
3. Husky
4. Bulldog
5. Maltese
6. Golden
7. Lab
8. Dalmation
9. Sheep Dog
10. Pug
Cocker spaniels and Cavalier King Charleses–very different dogs!!
I could write a novel on the merits of why the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be selected for the next Bee, but I will spare any cat lovers the intimate details of my love of this dog breed (you’re welcome!). I am the proud owner of two affectionate and intelligent Cavaliers that, at 15 and 19 pounds, still maintain the audacity to try to protect us from any large dog that comes near our home from their perch at the front window. The only problem? Most of the time they sneak in a nap while on guard duty. Cavaliers are curious, (see one of my monsters at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HRBnGSrF8g), sensitive to others, and overall, excellent in long-term committed relationships
Just like a Cavalier, Miss Cavalier would be similarly warm and loving, thrilled to be curled up on the couch, catching up her faithful readers on Weddingbee.
In case it isn’t clear, my vote is for the Cavalier… for now I will continue to dream of eventually becoming Miss Cavalier ![]()
Lab
Yorkie
Pug
Dachsund
Poodle
Maltese
Shih Tzu
Sheep Dog
Pom
King Charles

My Top ten: Beagle, jack russel, husky, pug, boxer or bulldog, lab/golden, dalmatian, poodle, and a big buy- sheperd or mountain dog!! So Fun!
I know that no one could change your decision but I would recommend looking into English Bull Terriers. They are amazing dogs. There is a great breeder that I could put you in contact with if you were interested.
We have a 3 year old male and he is by far the best dog i have owned. We are thinking about getting a second one. They are very smart, loving and well tempered dogs.
Backwoodsbullterriers.com
1. DALMATION with a fire hat:0)
2. Boxer
3. Lab
4. Pug
5. Maltese
6. Yorkie
7. Bulldog
8. Beagle
9. Basset Hound
10. bernese mountain dog
As a proud golden retriever owner, that’s my choice. They are versatile, active, funny, loyal, WONDERFUL with kids and other animals, do well in just about any environment, and a great friend. I wouldn’t trade mine for anything in the world. She makes me laugh and always knows when I need someone to just snuggle with me. ![]()
I was always a ‘big dog person’ since I grew up with a German Shepard mix and a Golden Retriever. My fiance and I live in an apartment right now so we picked a french bulldog and she certainly has a big dog personality in a small dog body. She comes everywhere with me because she is so small (19 lbs) and still runs with the big dogs at the park. She’s a little ball of muscle. Frenchies have the best personality and are so loveable! Pick a frenchie!
Top 10:
labrador retriever
yorkie
dachshund
bulldog (or french bulldog)
poodle
pug
basset hound
dalmation
jack russell
boston terrier
My Top Ten:
1. CORGI
2. dachshund
3. basset hound
4. cavalier king charles spaniel/ cocker spaniel
5.miniature schnauzer
6.pomeranian
7.husky
8.sheep dog
9.poodle
10. dalmation
I’ve noticed I’ve only bothered to log in to vote on this particular topic! ![]()
I like the labrador retriever, but I’m biased since I used to have one! ![]()
I’m very partial to beagles! My childhood beagle passed away this past Thanksgiving, and we all still miss her adorable face and near constant howling ![]()
definitely maltese… I have one and they are adorable.
I also like labrador retriever, yorkie, german sheperd, beagle, dachshund, bulldog, poodle, chihuahua, pug, husky, cavalier king charles spaniel or cocker spaniel, and dalmation
Beagle is my top vote!! I also like:
german sheperd
golden retriever
boxer
dachshund
pug
husky
corgi
basset hound
bernese mountain dog
I have a Yellow Lab and I couldn’t imagine anything better. He is the most loving, beautiful baby ever! He always gets excited to see me when I come home, snuggles with me when I need it and pretty much ROCKS!
Jack Russell, Lab, Yorkie, German Shepherd, Beagle, Boxer, Dachshaund, Pug, Pomeranian, Chihuahua
yorkie; bulldog (or french bulldog); poodle; shih tzu; chihuahua; pomeranian; pug; husky; dalmation; jack russell
Since noone can argue that mutts make the best dogs, why have to narrow your choice down to one breed? Try to find a combination of some of the “most voted for” breeds. Its easy on http://www.petfinders.com. The website links about shelters around the country and you can search by breeds. Its how I found my baby……border collie/bernese mtn dog mix. p.s. Can’t believe border collie didn’t make the list. Smartest and cutest by far!
We just bought a wonderful Cairn Terrier! Look into them, they are great dogs, a med. sized breed low shed med. energy and overall wonderful!
corgi, bull dog, shih tzu, cavalier king spaniel, labrador, jack russell, dalmation, pomeranian, beagle, boxer
i can’t wait to see how these look as icons
Dachshund, corgi, and pugs are three of my favorites! They are also fairly unique looking which I think is helpful to keep the characters distinguished!
My top ten:
German Shepherd Dog
Pug
French Bulldog
Daschund
Poodle
Chihuahua
Husky
Dalmation
Basset Hound
Bernese Mountain Dog
My top ten are:
Labrador, Pug, Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Jack Russell, Husky, Dachsund, Poodle, Shih tzu, German Shepherd.
I can’t wait to see which ones are picked!
Awe I vote for Westie (West Highland Terrier) but it not an option… I have 2 and they are super popular in my area.
My Top Ten are:
Westie
Frenchie
Pug
Dalmation
Jack Russel
Yorkie
Shih tzu
Chihuahua
Lab
German Shepherd
Get the best of both worlds, a Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle ![]()
aww why no love for the mini schnauzer? I had 2 and they are the cutest and easy to maintain. A salt and pepper mini schnauzer icon would be so cute!
I also love the dachshund, maltese, pug, lab and jack russel.
yay for cute dogs!
I think Dalmatian and dachshund will make the cutest icons BY FAR. But you also have to do the poodle, pug and sheep dog.
I think the more distinctive-looking the breed the better.
Here are my top ten.
labrador retriever
beagle
boxer
bulldog (or french bulldog)
poodle
shih tzu
pug
corgi
jack russell
bernese mountain dog
A little late to the party but…
A dalmation icon would be soooooo cute!!!! but I’m a little partial. We had 2 when I was growing up
I like the beagle, bernese, corgi, boxer, daschund, yorkie as well.
I would say from personal experience, a lab or a German Sheppard. Both are extremely obedient smart and good with kids. Plus, they are good companions and walking dogs. My littlest one (lab) is extremely playful and cute think marly and me without the extreme hijinks ^^!
