Save That Date!

March 4th, 2009 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

We knew that we wanted to use a photo from our engagement shoot for our save the date postcard. We knew that we wanted it to be urban, edgy and cool, and, as it turns out, to include a mural. We like to go big with sharing our wedding date with the world! ;)

Source: Laurie Peacock Photography

We LOVED this shot in front of this mural in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. This was taken in September 2008, pre-Election, when the excitement was continuing to build here in Chicago and across the country!

To keep political messages and endorsements to ourselves as this is about our wedding, Mr. S used Photoshop to remove the “Elect Obama” message from the wall and add our information. I love the line in the arrow above us that says, “Often Imitated, Never Duplicated.”

We used Overnight Prints to order our 4×6 postcards. The great thing about this vendor was that we were able to upload files for the front and back images, so Mr. S designed the information to go on the back. A lot of vendors I had sourced out did not provide us that option, but rather forced you to use a template and their font choices.

Mr. S also had a $10 off coupon, so we got 100 postcards for around $40, including shipping!! The print quality was really great and the cardstock was heavy and of good quality. We are really pleased.

For those of you who are thinking about how to word the information on your save the dates, after a lot of searching and playing around, we came up with this:

Make plans to join NAME & NAME
as they start the first chapter of their lives together
DATE
City, State
formal invitation to follow
Visit www.________.com for all of the information you’ll need
Accommodations are available at [hotel name]

I love that our save the date is distinctly us. It represents us, our city and our aesthetic. Now, hopefully everyone is saving the darn date!

They came out great! I am still looking for STD ideas, but postcards with the engagement pictures is one of my top choices. The place you used sounds great. I’ll have to look into them. Where’d you get the coupon?

Those are cute! Maybe I’m just saying this because I’m sitting in the classroom where I teach, but the sign kind of looks like a blackboard now. :)

I love Overnight Prints. I used them to buy and design my business cards. Your Save the Date couldn’t be any cuter (in an edgy sort of way.)

I can’t decide whether we should have Save the Date cards or not. I don’t know that the budget can handle the expense, but most of our guests will be out of towners… Plus, cute designs like this make me WANT them. :)

LOVE the STDs that you made! I’m working on designing my STDs right now, and have been looking for a company that I could upload my design for a full bleed print out…having trouble working around templates. So I LOVE that just when i was starting to look you offered the best post to help me out. Thank you and you did a GREAT job on them!

@slspears:
Yay I’m glad that this helped! Overnight Prints was SOOO reasonable and it was great having the flexibility to design how we wanted.

@Newport Nuptials:
Mr. S has bought business cards from there before, so I think he’s on their mailing list and happened to get a coupon emailed to him right before we ordered, how convenient!

@driftslikesmoke:
Honestly, this was a $60 investment for us (ordering 100 postcards and I think we bought like 80 postacrd stamps)…SO reasonable to do these, and it’s a nice extra touch if you can swing it, especially if you have a longer engagement like we do!

Hi — just came across your post while searching the hive for postcard STD’s. I went to Overnight Prints and did you do the glossy or matte finish? Did they arrive to your guests in OK shape? Thanks!

@Sharona: We did the matte finish and they arrived in good condition! We used them for another project (a map that was an insert in our invites) and there was a handful - maybe 10 or 15 of 100 - that had some discoloration on the edges that we were unhappy with, but we didn’t need the full 100 so we were able to not use them. However, for the price, it was great!

We also just ordered some from Zazzle and the quality was good there as well, although I don’t know what the price comparison would be for larger quantities (we just ordered 15).

Miss S — thanks for the prompt reply. I was just worried about the cards running through the post office machines and getting magled, but that’s great to know!
