Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!

Pretty Packaging from Laura Hooper

Our wedding invitations arrived just short of two weeks ago. Why am I just telling you about them now? Because I am crazy and a masochist.

I ordered these lovely invitations from Laura Hooper. Laura designed our STDs and I was extremely happy with them. I loved her invitation line, but sadly it was out of my budget (sigh–how I love letterpress). But Laura worked with us to design an invitation suite that we could squeeze into my budget.

Source

We decided on white cardstock with aqua lettering and tan icons. The colors remind me of the beach! To save on costs, we opted for thermography instead of letterpress, and a postcard instead of an RSVP envelope. The postcard allowed us to save in three ways—no extra envelope to buy, no need to print addresses on the envelope, and postcard stamps are almost half the cost of regular stamps! Plus, USPS has cute tropical fruit postcard stamps that are perfect for an island wedding!

Original Front and Back of Postcard

When we were in the process of designing the invitations I asked Laura about the cost of printing on both sides of the postcard. She let me know that printing on the other (non RSVP) side of the postcard was going to increase printing costs, and I just couldn’t fit that into our budget. But for some reason, I didn’t love the idea of sending postcards out with blank backsides. I asked Mr. K and some of my friends about this, and of course they all thought I was crazy. And I know it was totally irrational and the postcards looked BEAUTIFUL just the way they were, but I just couldn’t fight the temptation to decorate the backsides of those little suckers!

k3

Decorate me!

Of course this delayed the sendoff of our invitations, but I just really wanted to do it! Stay tuned tomorrow to see what I decided to do to them!

How did you have your guests RSVP? Would you decorate the back of our postcards or leave them blank?

I am DIYing all the invites and doing RSVP postcards as well. We are putting an engagement picture that shows off the beautiful setting where we are getting married (10 acres of oak trees and big rocks) on the “backside” on the RSVP card. We do realize that we are getting these back, but we chose two different pics for variety and plan to display some at the wedding (somehow).
I am excited to see what you did to your “backside”!

What a great idea! From using std post cards to thank you notes on post cards, this is another post card idea I will have to adopt for my own invitations. Imagine all of the money brides save by going the alternative post card route. Cannot wait to see what you do with the blank side!

Those look cute!

We’re just doing the standard blank card in an envelope. I wanted to do postcards but ended up changing my mind!

How great is the packaging?! I love Laura! She’s great down to the smallest detail. I wish I had another event to plan so I could work with her again!

Those are beautiful! I can’t wait to see what you did with the other side of the postcard. It’s a blank canvas!

You’ve given me the courage to do RSVP postcards too. I’m anxious to see the responses about what to do with the back!

It is a blank canvas, but YOU don’t have to fill it up…put a note at the bottom asking your guests to write a note or draw a picture for you when they RSVP!

They are beautiful! We are doing a starfish theme and I have been eyeing Laura Hooper’s work. We have a low budget for invites, so I may be making them myself, her’s are going to be my inspiration.

I can’t wait to see what you decide, I think I’d be the same and need soemthing as well, reven though they look gorgeous the way they are.

I put a picture of the Bellagio where we are getting married! Nobody wanted to send them back because they were so cute!

I’ve seen some people intentionally leave the back of their postcards blank and ask respondants to write them a note/draw them a picture/whatever on the back! It turns into a really cute keepsake and makes getting the RSVPs back even more fun.

I recently saw the idea of putting fabric on the backside of the postcard and LOVED it! There is a machine you can buy to give one side an adhesive backing. I can’t find the original source right now but will add it if I find it.

I love your invitations. Our themes are so similar. Mine is Aqua, Starfish and Ivory. I can wait to see how you complete the cards.

I *could not* send out a blank post card like that. That would bug me too!!!

I ordered picture postcards from Moo.com, but I still have to decorate the back when they get here!

@Brandy: It’s the Xyron! ^_^

I would have the worst time sending blanks as well, without at least writing a note that says Leave a note or doodle for the happy couple. :)

We did postcard RSVP for the same reason too! It just seems so practical to do it that way. I can’t wait to see what you did with the back!

What’s a cool idea, RSVP as postcards, Awesome! They look adorable too. I would definitely decorate the blank side, depending on how many you are sending I would sketch a little sea horse or fish, anything that goes with your theme. Or, you can just write a nice personalized note.

I put the place for them to write their names and the check boxes with an image on one side and just our return address (and a stamp) on the other. I though that was how they were always done… shows what I know :) I do like the idea of putting a note asking guests to write or draw something themselves.

I love the idea of having guests doodle or leave a message! I have a feeling most of our guests wouldn’t notice the request, but I’m sure that the ones that did would produce scrapbook-worthy results!
