Underthings

March 5th, 2009 @ 12:16 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

So, my first dress fitting is today!! I am so nervous.

It won’t actually be my dress, but a muslin of my dress made to fit my body!! While I have been working extra hard to get my body into shape (I’ll post on this soon), I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have some extra under-roo help.

So, I went looking for the holy Mecca of underwear shapers—Spanks!!!

With the help of the woman in the undies department, I grabbed a few shapers and headed to the dressing room.

First up, the Spanks shaper and smoother.

source

I hate to go against the grain, but I didn’t love the Spanks! They were totally comfortable, and they made everything smoother, but it didn’t feel like anything was sucked in.

Here’s the winner of the trip, a surprise contender: Wacoal

source

It is totally comfortable, super thin, and it feels like everything is put in the right place.

I only tried on two shapers, so by no means am I an expert.

Anyone have a shaper undergarment that they recommend?

I got Dr. Rey’s Shapewear and it’s awesome!! Wayyy better then Spanx! It also goes all the way up under your bra and made me lose 2 pants sizes! I love it!

I was just going to recommend Dr. Rey’s shapewear too! I bought it for my wedding dress, and it is definitely way better than Spanx! It can be purchased at dept. stores and at http://www.hsn.com

ooh this is the post I’ve been waiting for! I saw both of those at the store and didn’t know if I could try them, but now there is Dr. Reys too. hmm. Which one is better out of those? ah decisions. Anyway, Mrs. Peep have a great first fitting!

I have never tried the Wacoal, but I definitely like Dr. Rey’s better than Spanx - Spanx smoothes, but doesn’t really such in like the Dr. Rey’s. And I actually got a bodysuit from Dr. Rey’s (the low plunge halter body suit, I have a halter dress - I bought it at HSN online), so it’ll be both my bra and my body shaper all in one!

I like the spanx that come up all the way to under your boobs, but I can see by just looking at the wacoal that it looks like a great product!

Dontcha just love how they put those spanx on models that don’t need spanx… I mean I get it (they do that with all clothes) but if I really wanna believe in a product, show me some cottage cheese thunder thighs before and after! :)

I haven’t tried anything yet but I LOVE Wacoal. It’s the only bra brand that fits me right.

So true Mrs. Penguin. I haven’t tried the Wacoal shapers, but I swear by their bras. It’s all I wear now. Sure, they look like granny bras, but my god do they make the twins sit up straight!

Couldn’t agree more with Mrs. Penguin! We all have our insecurities but don’t sell us a fat girl product on a skinny girl!

I have a pair of the up to the boobs Spanx, and it’s so true that they smooth but don’t suck it in as much as I’d expected (maybe I just have a size too big?)

Ha! Not to give TMI, but I have those Spanx on right now under my work clothes! :-) They don’t suck me in a ton, but they definitely help everything fit more smoothly.

Duct tape.

HAHA, J/k!!

I’m always scared to buy something that sucks you in but doesn’t go all the way down to your knees and up to your ribs! Cuz where they stop all my flab pours out and you can see how big my thighs REALLY are!! LOL!!

I’m dying laughing because I was going to write about the skinny model wearing spanx and then I saw Mrs. Penguin’s posted and busted out laughing! It’s so true - those skinny 6′ plus models don’t need to wear Spanx - lets see some girls in need sportin’ Spanx to see what really happens! I can say that I do have a couple pairs and besides the bathroom issue (I’m sorry the little pee hole or WHATEVER you want to call it just doesn’t cut it for me) they are quite nice!

I am on the search now for a super sucker-iner for my dress fitting in two months. Whenever I do wear a dress or dress pants I put on Spanks. But I agree that the Spanks do hold a lil bit in but I know there is something stroner our there! I think I need to go try on Wacoal and see its intensity.

Hm they seem to only have larger sizes in stock. Perhaps they are just out of other sizes right now?

The only reason that I’m a sucker for Spanx is that I have yet to find another brand (and PLEASE let me know if you know of something) that is…ahem…crotchless, which means no having to peel off that sucker to use the ladies room!
But I do agree, while they do smooth everything out, they’re definitely not the best sucker-inner (whatever. it made sense to me)

That’s great that you were able to compare both companies and see which one was best for you. I always just assumed that spanx were the best from everyone’s rave reviews. It’s nice to know the other options available as well.

My first fitting is in a few weeks as well. Do any of you that rave about Dr. Rey have a recommendation on which of his products work well? The ones I have looked at of his seem to have poor reviews. I need something that will suck my waist in but not show panty lines. Thanks!

Just wanted to chime in with a recommendation for Body Wrap shapewear. I haven’t tried Wacoal or Dr. Rey’s, but it works much better than Spanx!

Has anyone tried the Dr. Rey’s Shapewear™ High-Waist Shaper Brief (http://fashion.hsn.com/dr-reys-shapewear-high-waist-shaper-brief_m-10036159_xp.aspx?web_id=3701452&sf=fa&dept=fa0031&cat=fa0035&attr=5061&ocm=fa|5061|fa0031|fa0035&prev=hp!sf!5061!dept!cat&ccm=fa|5061|fa0031|fa0035)? I’d never heard about them before and was just going to go with Spanx, but this post and the comments have been so helpful! I want something with a lot of sucking power and, ahem, no need to remove everything when you have to go to the bathroom!

Now I am totally feeling the need to check out Dr. Rey’s. I guess that will be post wedding dress fitting. Anyone know if they are available at places like Macy’s or other department stores?

And Pengy, so right there with ya- what is with all the size 2 models putting on shapers??

ok i have a question. how do you get the shapers to not roll down? when i wear my spanx, it is pulled up a few inches under my boob but when i walk around or sit or what not, it rolls and you can see the creases it makes. am in the only one with this issue? am i wearing it wrong?!

I was sooo unprepared for my first dress fitting 2 week ago!! I didn’t bring a proper bra (it’s a corset open back). I totally didn’t remember that the back would be open meaning I couldn’t even wear a strapless bra. I ended up going to Victoria’s Secrets afterwards and got the gel-cups stick ons and they were 50% off! So I’m hoping in 2 weeks when I go back to try it on again it will be perfect.

I wear Spanx pretty regularly and they are comfortable and provide a lot of smoothing and some shaping. When I want a lot of smoothing and a lot of shaping, I do what my mother always pestered me to do: I wear a girdle. They still make them. They are not as comfortable as Spanx but they are not as uncomfortable as you might think. And they work absolute wonders. I have two of them, a regular waisted long-leg and a high-waisted long-leg that gives you a perfect figure. They’re made by a company called Rago and I get them at a very nice lingerie site called secretsinlace.com. If you want real shaping, you owe it to yourself to check these out.

I’ve only ever tried Spanx, but now I’m tempted to try some of these other slimmers I’m reading about! I didn’t even know anything else existed!

I found the perfect bra at a local lingerie shop (seriously, best thing ever) but wanted some shapewear to suck in the stomach and give me better posture. I went to Dillard’s not expecting to buy anything and ended up buying this miracle not-moving-a-friggin-inch shapewear - TC Fine Pull-On Waist Cincher! I was surprised but it goes all the way to my bra and eliminates the under-the-bra tummy bulge I didn’t want to happen. Plus I don’t have to navigate the ‘underwear’ portion of the Spanx. Double happiness!

Spanx are awesome, but I think it’s time for me to upgrade to the queen size because the ones i have are starting to cut off my circulation.

I’m loving all the recommendations in this post and thank you Peep Toe for bringing this topic to the table! I have various versions of Spanx and have been looking for something with a little more “suction” if ya know what I mean! I’m excited to try some of the suggestions in this post.

@LzzNYC: You’ll be able to tell how the shaper fits yourself and if it’s comfortable. @Cherie: Very interesting. Might have to check it out!!

PS A trick the seamstress told me yesterday- put the shaper over the bustier. That way the line of the bustier isn’t shown when wearing the dress and the shaper doesn’t roll down.

I think I’m going to have to go try some of those things on. I don’t really need them for my wedding dress, but I will need them for my rehearsal dinner and bachelorette party dresses. Gosh, I love having so many excuses to by dresses!

OK, ladies, I did some research. Dr. Rey’s is available at Sears, but to my knowledge is not available at any other department store (the other stores I checked were Macy’s, Lord and Taylor, Nordstroms, and Bloomingdales).

I went and tried some on this weekend and I fully expected to like the “Dr. Rey’s Shapewear High Waist Sculpted Bottom Brief” best. However, when I tried the “Dr. Rey’s Shapewear High Waist Step In,” I found that it definitely sucked me in a little more. It takes a couple minutes to put that sucker on, but wow, once it’s on…. It seems to me that it stays up much better than Spanx (I also have the problem of it slipping down) and it has the weird crotch fold thing, so that when you have to go #1, you don’t have to peel the whole thing off again. I haven’t tried that yet, so I don’t know how well that works yet! The one thing I will say about the brief one is that it could definitely leave a panty line, so if that’s a concern, go with the one that goes to mid thigh.

Also, it’s only $40 at the store, and for some reason it’s $47.50 online (plus shipping). Good luck everyone!!

I bought Spanx to wear under my dress at my brothers wedding in April. I planned on wearing them under my wedding dress as well. However, it occurred to me that if I have to go to the bathroom my entire dress would have to be undone in order to do so. (The spanx I have are the shorts ones that go up to your boobs and my wedding dress is a corset back.) So I have obviously decided against wearing them when I get married. My wedding dress does a really good job of hiding all my bumps anyways since it’s a corset back. But I’m still going to need to find something. I have big thighs and have problems with chaffing and the spanx I have would have prevented that but like I said, I can’t and am not going to wear them. So now the search is on for something else.
