Broadcasting Your Wedding

Have an ideal guest list that doesn’t fit your budget? Or perhaps you have too many family and friends that can’t travel to your wedding locale. What if you could invite them all to share in the magic as it happens… and broadcast it LIVE through the internet?

I’ve seen the idea floating around the web for quite a long time, but today it became a reality when one of my favorite online personalities, Gwen Bell, announced the live-streaming of her nuptials today at 3PM MST. She’s using UStream to share her ceremony and reception with anyone who wants to join in on the happy event… and I’m sure you could easily translate the idea for your own event.

What if you sent out a small postcard to everyone that declined an invitation with a link to your broadcast? Or sent and email far and wide to everyone you know a day before the event, just to spread the love? Heck, you could send out a Tweet or update your Facebook status and let everyone share in the love!

While I’m sure some this idea might not be for everyone, if you’re one who’d love to have the world at your doorstep to share in your love, it might be the perfect solution! :) Showcasing the wedding video months later just doesn’t quite have the same effect.

Would you live-stream your wedding for your guests that are unable to attend?

I totally wanted to do this, but then I was like “Man, we’re in POLEBRIDGE… like there’s INTERNET.”

Turns out, eheh, they have wireless… so we could have. Welp.

We’re doing a DW and a few of our loved ones can’t come, so we are trying to work this out with the resort right now. I love the idea of being able to share our moment with them in real time, even though they can’t be there.

When me and the Mr where meeting with videographers…one made mention that they began broadcasting ceremonies for couples who had important family members who where unable to attend the wedding wether it be due to them being sick or unable to travel. I thought that it was really sweet and a cool idea.

My brother is in Iraq right now, which is why we are getting a videographer. Turns out he wont be home for the wedding. So, I thought of streaming the video, but I am not sure how that will work with his internet connection.

Such a brilliant idea!! I had been really concerned about Mr. Merriment’s grandmother being unable to attend, but this is a great option to consider…thank you!!!

They have this option at the Grand Old House, where we are getting married. I need to ask them about it! It would be great for those relatives who can’t come all the way to Grand Cayman!

What a great idea! This would be great coz most of my family are from the Philippines and they can’t come to the wedding. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is possible with my venue and all.

my boss’ niece did this. apparently she and her now husband eloped in Vegas and the place they were married actually offered the live stream service to where you just sent the link to your family and friends!

I really want to do this too. Especially for my fiance’s sister who will practically be giving birth 3000 miles away. I have noticed that several videographers have this as an option (for a fee). Does anyone know how to do this on one’s own? My location does have wireless internet.

I love the idea, but I’m not sure it’s for me. Unfortunately there are some people (like my son’s crazy biodad) who I wouldn’t want to see it. But if it was password protected then we might consider it! I love the thought of doing that for our friends who might not be able to make it. Anyone know how secure we could make it? It’d probably be way out of our budget… :(

@mixingmommybride: Actually, UStream lets you password protect your broadcasts, it’s just a simple option when you are setting up your feed.

I LOVE this idea! How did I not hear of this before? Under what rock was I under? I especially love the idea of sending an invite to people who couldn’t make it to the wedding. I am definitely looking into this. Thanks Mrs. Lemon!

Not a bad idea. I’m not sure my budget allows for live video streaming..but it’s pretty cool anyway

This is such a fantastic idea! It could be the solution to the half of my guest list 2.5 hours away that can’t/won’t travel. :)

Mrs. Lemon, thanks for posting about this. Here are a few things to keep in mind that I found from livestreaming our wedding a week and a half ago.

- it’s free. Ustream.tv requires little more than sufficient upload speed and a webcam to broadcast your wedding. The folks at Ustream were very friendly about making sure we had the necessary bits in place to make it a success.
- it’s true that _anyone_ can watch. We weren’t doing anything “private” at the reception. We were going to stream the ceremony, as well, but the Boulder weather was merciful and pretty on 03.06.09 so we decided last minute to do it outside - wifi didn’t reach out there. It was a sacrifice I decided to make.
- it’s easy to publicize. We had a Facebook page set up and people RSVPd to the livestream weeks in advance.
- we also set up a “hashtag” on Twitter (#gwen+joel) and people left comments and well wishes for us - pages of sweet, daily reminders we’ll have forever, from friends around the globe
- we had more than 1k people participate in some way (mostly virtually) with our wedding so it’s not for everyone. PR/new media and the intersection of tech and humanity is what I do - so it made sense for us. He’s a Computer Scientist.
- if you want to read more on it, check Corilyn’s piece at the chron - http://www.chron.com/disp/discuss.mpl/moms/6296159.html?p=2
- whatever you decide to do, go for it - people stream less important things than their weddings all the time (granted, those shiba inus are cute…)- if it works for you, run with it! <3
