Daddy and Daughter Bust a Move!

March 6th, 2009 @ 2:21 pm by Mrs. Joey

I saw my Dad over the weekend and he said he had a great idea for the Father - Daughter dance. I have to admit, I felt like his choice of song would be so bad it might make me cry (not really). Maybe a little Englebert Humperdinck? Yes, I remember a time in the ’80s where my Dad listened to him a lot and my sister and I would hide from embarrassment in our own house.

But it wasn’t Mr. Humperdinck he longed to boogie to. Then I thought it would be something a little more Sri-Lankan. Perhaps this?

I couldn’t find the song I was looking for, but the verse my sister and I used to sing and laugh to was, “Welcome, welcome, to Sri-Lanka. You’re most welcome to Sri-Lanka.” It wasn’t the song that used to make us laugh. It was the sight of my Dad prancing around the house to it.

“Welcome to Sri-Lanka” wasn’t his choice of song either. What did he decide? Well, he wants to do the Twist. And you know, I might do the Twist with him. I think the whole thing represents us so well, as the strange and crazy Father - Daughter duo that we are.

I wasn’t entirely convinced that doing the Twist would be our Father - Daughter dance until I saw this clip that Mr. Joey’s mom sent me. I might be sold now. OK Dad, I’m ready to get my groove on.

I can see Mr. Joey cringing already, but at least I’m not making him do the Twist.

What song did you and your Dad dance to?

If my Dad was still with us we would have danced to Desperado by the Eagles. I really want to do a Mother Daughter dance where it starts out as Christina Aguilera’s I Turn to You and then switches to Bob Seger Old Time Rock n Roll. My Mom & I both LOVE Oldies and I think it would be funny for us… I have to remember to ask her about that! :)
I would LOVE to see a Bride & her Dad get down to the Twist! I hope you have video! :D

Wow, that video was crazy! I laughed so hard it brought tears to my eyes. I bet it would be a blast to watch that as a wedding guest, but I can’t imagine doing that. Maybe the “Thriller” part, because I’m a bit obsessed with that dance, but I doubt my FI would be down with it.

I’m assuming that’s the bride and groom’s first dance, and not the father daughter dance. I’ll probably stick with something traditional for the father-daughter dance, because I can’t remember my dad dancing ever in my past, but Miss Joey, you should definitely do the twist. That bride in the video looked so cute doing it, and I’m you and your dad would be a hit! Good luck!

Ooh I’ve seen that last video on youTube…sooo fun!

I think the daddy/daughter song is really hard. I’ve been considering the song that is the closing credits of the moving “Knocked Up” by Louden Wainwright (I think it’s just called “Daugther”). It’s a little bit country for my taste, but I love the line “that’s my daughter…everything she has I bought her” … I was a wee bit spoiled ;)

You totally just made my day with that video! I am crying. I wish FI was home so I could show it to him!! He wants us to do a coreographed dance for our reception (though nothing that awesome) LOVE IT!!!
I think the twist is an amazing song to dance with your father to. I love the idea of making the reception into a high energy party as opposed to the mushy sentimental (not that I have anything against mushy.. I just want it to be more spunky!)
Yay the twist!

We went for the traditional dance song with a “surprise” in the middle. Totally my dad’s style :0P

That father-daughter dance was absolutely hilarious! I wish I could go back and do it all over again.. I’m sure that my dad would’ve done something crazy like that too! How funny!

hahah that was hilarious! was that really a dad or was that a groom? my FI actually quit what he was doing to watch it too… although he says we need to save our energy for later that night.. haha.

my dad and i are definitely dancing to “our song” which is Tiny Dancer. sort of a weird song for a father daughter song, but it’s our song and that’s what we’ll be dancing to. i know if we danced to anything else he’d be sad… although this video has inspired me to throw a BUNCH of different songs together for him and i to dance to. i think we have more songs together than i do with my FI. lol

Good choice! =) But, I may be biased…I did a “surprise dance” with my Uncle at my reception and used the 80s Fat-Boys rap verison of the Twist. Funny thing was…he wasn’t in on it - the surprise was for him!

There’s a story that goes behind it, which explains why I wore hot pink socks under my dress. =) I’ll spare you the details here, but if you’re interested you can read all about it and watch a video on my blog:

http://themeckleys.com/blog/2008/11/the-story-behind-the-pink-socks/

It was very fun, yet meaningful as I didn’t have a father/daughter dance. I’m not much for slow dancing and my Uncle was surprised and had a great time. Our friends and family loved it! It was hard to keep it a secret for so long! (I did tell a few people to expect something a little crazy!)

My Dad and I are getting funky for sure! We used to boogie around the living room all the time when we were little kids and I remember how silly and fun I thought my Dad was then:-)We’re dancing to Brown Eyed Girl which makes great sense since I am his only brown eyed daughter and it’s considered oddly special in my family of green and blue eyed ladies. I know it will be super fun in addition to being meaningful.

I think that doing something that means something to the both of you (you and your dad) is what will make it SO special! My dad used to do something that my sister and I called “rug dancing” to the Fat Boys “Wipeout” song…but I don’t think that I could bat my eyelashes enough to get him to do that in a tux!

Good Luck!

I am not picking the Father Daughter dance I am leaving that totally up to my Dad. I think he is leaning towards Mi Nena Bonita that has been remade by every Spanish artist known to man.

I can’t believe the timing of this post! Literally this morning I told my dad he’d have to start thinking about what song he wanted for our father-daughter dance … Without hesitation he replied, “Anything by Chubby Checker!” My dad has a fairly well-developed sense of humour so I assumed he was joking … but he went on to say that he REALLY wanted to do the twist! I’m so pleased as I never wanted to go down that whole ’sentimental’ route - even though I’m getting married, I’ll still be his daughter so there’s no need to get weepy about it!
The best part will be the look on my mum’s face, as we’re planning to keep it a secret from EVERYONE until the big day!
