Dress Dilemma… Solved!

March 6th, 2009 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Mascara

Dana (one of my bridesmaids) and I went to Minneapolis to visit Kiera and Dona (bridesmaid and Matron of Honor) for the weekend. While I was there, we went to David’s Bridal to try on the dresses that I picked out for them to wear for the wedding. The girls tried on two styles of dresses. The “bubble dress” as we are calling it, and another style made of the same material. They decided that they are fine wearing either one. I think both dresses are cute, although the bubble dress is much more my style.

c1

Because I don’t want all the girls to look exactly the same, my thought was to either let the girls choose between the two styles in the same color (most likely purple) or have all the girls get the same dress, but in different colors. I think the different color effect would be kind of cool and a little more original, but either way is fine with me.

c2

I had everyone pick their first and second color choices out of the three, and they ended up alternating between blue and purple. So I’m considering just using the 2 colors of dresses, and then having the guys wear green ties. The other option is adding a couple green dresses in the mix and having the guys wear purple ties.

c3

After trying on dresses, we went to a store called Francesca’s Collections. While we were there, guess what I found? Headbands! In the same exact colors as the dresses! Meant to be? I thought so!

c4

After thinking it over, we’ve decided that we’ll be going with just two of the colors, teal and plum. The guys will be wearing moss/olive green ties. I think this is the best option for a few reasons:

  1. I want everyone to have their first choice for color. It just so happens that the order happens to be teal, plum, teal, plum, teal, plum, teal. Ask and you shall receive!
  2. I am anal and I like order. The order of the dresses when using three colors and not giving all of the girls their first choice in color is less than perfect.
  3. With the girls having (most likely) green bouquets, I think the flowers with the green dresses would blend in a little more than I’d like.
  4. I think the balance of the green bouquets and green ties will tie everything together enough that we won’t need the green dresses. And our bridal party will look less like a rainbow. Hooray!

option1

So it’s been decided. I’ve called all of my lovely bridesmaids to tell them the news and to let them order their dresses. They are going to look beautiful walking down the aisle in their teal and plum dresses! And the guys will be looking dapper as well in their pinstriped suits and green ties!

There’s a Francesca’s Collections near me — but I’ve never been in before. Might have to check it out after your great headband find!

And I agree with your love of order and symmetry — glad it worked out so well!

Aww, you’re really choosing the bubble hem dress? Personally, I think the v-neck looks much more flattering on all three of your bridesmaids. But, I guess it is your choice, and if you prefer the bubble, go for it!

I’ll admit, sad for the lack of b-maid olive - but those two colors do look lovely together!

What if you did olive headbands for all your maids, and then olive ribbons on the bouquets? Maybe even olive shoes, if you can find a reasonable pair of dyables…that way you get that lovely mix of all three colors, and it sort of ties in even more with the men’s side.

I love your colors! Do you happen to have the style # of the v-neck dress? It’s exactly what I’m looking for, and I can’t seem to find it on the DB website.

Don’t change a thing! I think the bubble dresses are way more flattering. Each of your bridesmaids have lovely shoulders and neckline, so why hide them under those thick straps? We chose v-neck but simply because I wanted to be the only one wearing strapless… ;) I love your color palette. Can’t wait to see more!

While I’m not a fan of the bubble dresses at all, I love the V-neck dresses - they’re gorgeous and so flattering! The headbands and color scheme are really beautiful.

I love love love the “bubble dress”. Two of my BMs are having some kind of a bubble in their dress. While the other two dont. (they are wearing different dresses same color).
I checked out Francescas and there is one in my state still a bit of a distance from but there are some majorly cute stuff.

BEWARE: This line at David’s Bridal stains really really REALLY easily. I was a bridesmaid in the green v-neck dress this summer. Make sure the girls don’t wear deoderant with any sort of lotion/gel in it… it needs to be as dry as possible. Most of us walked down the aisle with HUGE armpit stains due to the deoderant!!! Another handful of us had stains from spraying perfume after we had the dresses on. Any liquid that is not PURE water will stain horribly. Flower water is definitely not PURE/CLEAN water so keep the flower stems in their bouqets away from the dresses!!! YIKES!!! Caused a lot of stress while we were all getting ready.

I love the bubble hem dress. I was thinking of the same thing for my MOH and bridesmaids (if I’m having any).

Fantastic choices! My sister in law tried on the bubble dress for me, and it wasn’t flattering on her, but it looks great on all your girls! I might have to have them revisit it!!

I just found out this weekend I’m going to be a bridesmaid for the first time, woo! and the bride has already narrowed down the dress to that bubble dress and another at DB. I’m really hoping for the bubble!

ohhh…. i totally hate to be another dissenter, but i too, am not a fan of the bubble dress - i loved it in the catalog, and had my Fi’s sister try it on, and everyone burst out laughing! we now take it as a big joke - we call it the mushroom dress! I am a fan of the vneck though, and your colors - the blue and purple are so rich and regal!

I think the bubble dress is more flattering to your bridesmaids - the rouching in the waist is slimming, and the bubble skirt is cute and fun.
