About Mrs. Deviled Egg

…and properly pinning on a boutonniere is one of them!

pinning

Let’s face it. It’s darn near impossible to pin a boutonniere (or corsage) on yourself, all by yourself. Trying to get it straight and keeping it from flopping over are some of the challenges, so be prepared to help out the guys in your wedding party by learning how to master the pinning technique.

At some of the weddings I’ve attended, I fell into the role of official boutonniere and corsage pinner. (Is “pinner” even a word?) It’s not rocket science, but it does take a good, sturdy pin, which your florist should provide, and a good eye for keeping things straight.

I think the key is to NOT pin through the stem. This will create a pivot point and cause the flower to flop over.

Here’s a good YouTube video that demonstrates the right way to do it:

And if you have more questions, check out this step-by-step guide provided by ehow.com.

It’s such a simple skill, but it has a lifetime of value as you or members of your family take part in weddings, Mother’s Days, proms, and other special occasions down the road.

What are some other wedding related tasks that leave people scratching their heads? Do you have any links to good tutorials on them?

It seems silly but so true, I am one to say that dont come to me to pin anything becuase two things will happen either I stick you with the pin or I will stab myself. haha! Great video as a FYI I am emailing in to my future MIL.

I know that not many people know how to tie a bow.

Thx! We had a wedding this summer and my FI was a groomsman and I couldn’t pin his boutonniere on so that it would sit right. The youtube video is helpful.

I always wondered why they made the pins with a pearl head if you’re not supposed to see the pin head! If they made them ugly people would always remember to put them under the lapel…hehehe!

I always manage to pinch myself when I’m dealing with pins and whatnot — so this is definitely useful…thanks!

I’d definitely say tying a tie… my FI and I decided the guys will be wearing euroties instead of bowties.
Another thing I realized I need to keep in mind is make sure all the guys’ ties are tied the same way. (A little neurotic? Yes, I am.)

Totally! I guess it’s inappropriate to expect the men to wear wrist corsages after all… ;)

Thanks! This is very helpful, I’m pretty sure my FMIL knows how to do this but it’s a good thing to know. And yeah, tying a tie - I still need to learn how to do that.
I’ll be making the bouquets so I found this tutorial (from Martha Stewart) very helpful: http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/article/spring-flower-bouquet
I may have even found the link here on weddingbee :P

Another tip regarding corsage pinning… the bow/ribbon (if there is one) always should go on the bottom… flowers up, bows down like they grow. Sometimes grandma-types want to wear them inverted… a no no.

@loralie: tying a tie is also an important thing to know how to do. It’s surprising when guys can’t, especially business professionals. I learn how to do ties in Sunday School when I was about 9 or 10 years old. Some of the guys struggled with it, so I would tie ties for them.

I used to take pictures at all my brother’s formals etc. and I was the official “pinner” for him and his friends. It was so funny. I always get nervous I’ll stab them…

Useful skill, one that I didn’t think to master before my own wedding. Luckily, my amazing wedding photographer knew how to do it and pinned all the boutonnieres and corsages on!
