Bridal Bouquets

March 9th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Mascara

There is a lot to learn about wedding bouquets. There are so many different types of flowers, it’s overwhelming! White bouquets are classic, but I find myself always drawn to the more colorful bouquets. I love the look of a bouquet that has varying types of flowers all in shades of the same color. For our wedding, I think I’d like to carry a purple bouquet. I think it will go nicely with my ivory dress. Although I am not a florist, I have looked at some options that I think I’d like to have in my bouquet. Of course I wouldn’t have to have all of them!

Anemones, dahlias, delphinium, orchids, hydrangeas, and ranunculus. Of course, I would want them all in varying shades of a plum/purple color, if possible. Here are a couple examples of the flowers in the right colors.
Orchids, ranunculus, hydrangeas (please ignore the stephanotis in the middle) and dahlias. I hope the bouquet would look something like this pink one, below, as far as size and shape. This is also where the idea of mixing flowers came from. I realize none of the flowers are the same.

Although, I also love the idea of having a bouquet of just ranunculus. They are by far my favorite flower! Something like this bouquet in shades of purple, minus the peonies, and smaller (you’ll have to use your imagination!).

Pictures from The Knot.

What flowers do you think would look good in an all-purple bouquet?

I’m not so much a fan of them, but maybe gerberas would work well?

I love ranunculus as well! And since I can’t have anemones for our wedding, I’m going to be relying heavily on ranunculus and dahlias in my bouquet. :-)

I think hydrangeas would look nice because you always get a nice variation in the colors. Peonies are beautiful, too!

Ranunculus are beautiful, but my florist said they’re an early spring flower, so we’re going with lisianthus instead.

I *love* hydrangeas! My flowers are going to be mainly blue and white ones — but the purple ones are so gorgeous and can come in so many shades. I think they’re just beautiful and they’re so big that it doesn’t take as many flowers to fill out a bouquet.

Oooh, I love purple tulips, as well as other violety colored bouquets! There could be freesia, snapdragons, lilacs, iris, forget-me-nots?

Here’s a link to teleflora’s purple bouquets, just for inspiration.

Also, I had that same color yellow/orange ranunculus at my November 3rd wedding, so I’m pretty sure they were available. I had them instead of the sweet peas I wanted (also, sweet peas would be a purple).

I love ranunculus, too! I found the perfect colour of them for my bouquet, but when I went to talk to a florist about them he said that they’re mostly a spring flower and we’re getting married in late June. I’m not sure that I want to spend the extra money, but it’s still an option.

I LOVE that white bouquet! *sigh*
I think purple garden roses would look great in your all purple bouquet :)

I wanted a muted purple bouquet and am going with mostly sterling roses. They have are a beautiful muted lavender color. I had never heard of or seen them before I started working on my wedding flowers.

What beautiful flower eye candy! I’m still clueless about floral arrangements and what flowers are available or in season for my wedding. I was also thinking about incorporating purple flowers into my bouquet. A few weeks ago I saw these lovely purple hydrangeas at Costco, and I fell in love.

Here’s a link to the pink/purple bouquet my bridesmaids are having as an inspiration (it has purple cool water roses, pink calla lilies, white cymbidium orchids, and some others!)

I love the idea of a bouquet of hydrangeas it would be so full and round, and with 350 guests it seems like everything in your wedding should be big and bright.
I do love the ranunculus though.

Tulips! I’m doing a purple bouquet as well, not completely purple though - I will have some red in there too, and the one flower that I keep thinking about is tulip. I also think a tulip would look awesome in a boutonniere.

Talk to your Florist about which purple flowers are in season and let her create! My aunt is doing my flowers and I just told her what my colors are and she’s going to run with it.

She told me as a Florist when brides are specific sometimes they end up with less gorgeous bouquets depending on the state of the flowers at market that week. I went with her to the flower market back in September and was amazed by the different vivid colored flowers!!

Been a while since we’ve had some good flower porn on here. I love the orchids, but mostly because the first flowers my FI gave me were a dendrobium lei!

I can’t wait to see what you decide on! I am going to have a purple bouquet too and I am not sure what to put in it. I have been warned though that purple flowers can look gray in pictures.

I’m working through the same thing… which flowers will be great? I originally had hydrangeas but then noticed I could run into blueish flowers.. so I think I exed that one..

I love the shades of a single color too. It really makes you notice the amazing textures when you have a monochromatic palette

Wow! I’m amazed at how similar our weddings are shaping up to be! Ranunculus are one of my favorite flowers, and I plan to have dark purple ones all over my wedding!

Needless to say, I plan to have a purple ranunculus bouquet. :)

If your wedding is in early September, anemones might not be available. I LOVE anemones and am getting married the first weekend of September, and my florist is going to try to get them but it might not happen if they’re going to end up costing a ton.

That being said, I vote for anemones, ranunculus, sweet peas, lisianthus. Freesia only comes in lavender so if you want dark purple, no freesia.

My favorite color is purple, and all our flowers are going to be what’s listed above - all in white for cocktail hour, all in purple for the reception, and in purple for my bridesmaids’ bouquets and in white for mine (I’m wearing a purple gown so purple flowers aren’t a good idea).

Also, purple stock and plum hydrangeas are good an inexpensive additions to your bouquet - anemones, sweet peas, lisianthus, and freesia are not only expensive but delicate flowers so you might want to support/pad your bouquet with some of those. (I was paying attention at my meeting with the florist!)

I planted ranunculus, then we sold our house and I don’t get to reap the benefits!

We’ll be working with our florist to get them for my bouquet and our centerpieces. Love them!

Love your ideas, but before you get too excited make sure those flowers are available in September! I was so sad when I found out I can’t have peonies, ranunculus, or anemones at my Sept. wedding. I really like the idea of diff types of flowers in the same shade. So cute!

I made a purple tulip bouquet to practice and I loved it (but my colors are yellow and navy so I’m using yellow ranunculus instead). Here’s a link to pics of it: http://spindlephotography.blogspot.com/2009/02/bouqet-shots.html
