DIY Tissue Paper Pomanders

March 9th, 2009 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

From the moment I laid eyes on tissue paper pomanders, I knew I wanted to make them for our aisle decor. The pomanders reminded me of tissue paper carnations I made as a child. My mom still has a bouquet of tissue paper circles crinkled atop pipe cleaners that I gave her for Mother’s Day well over a decade ago. Last week, I relived my childhood, as my mom and I made hundreds of tissue paper carnations. We then turned the carnations into pomanders.

If you too would like to make tissue paper pomanders, I’ve put together a little tutorial:

Supplies:

  • Tissue paper in desired color (8 sheets of paper made approximately 2 pomanders)
  • Scissors
  • Floral wire (I used 26 gauge)
  • Wire cutter
  • Styrofoam balls (I used 4 inch balls from the Dollar Tree)
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue gun

Steps:

1. Separate tissue paper into groups of 4 sheets, and fold.

2. Using a template that is 3 inches in diameter, trace circles onto folded tissue paper, and cut. Use a paper clip to keep circles together as you cut.

3. Repeat as necessary, cutting 8 sheets of circles per 2 pomanders.

4. Using wire cutter, cut wire into 4 inch pieces. Fold wire in half and twist bottom, leaving a needle-like top.

5. One by one, place 4 circles on wire, crinkling each circle as you go.

6. Cut a long piece of ribbon. Fold a small piece of wire in the center of the ribbon, twisting the ends together.

7. Place the wire end of the ribbon into the Styrofoam ball using a hot glue gun to secure.

8. Tie a bow at the top of the ribbon to create a handle.

9. Place wired carnations into Styrofoam ball, hot gluing to secure. Each pomander requires approximately 30 carnations.

This isn’t wedding related, but if you all could, please keep my baby Gabby in your thoughts. Yesterday, she couldn’t open her right eye, so I rushed her to the emergency vet. The vet performed a florescent scan of her eye and found a corneal laceration. She is now on an ophthalmic antibiotic and pain medication. She seems to be doing well, but has an irritated, half-shut eye. She sees her regular vet later this week to ensure that the laceration is healing properly.

Awwww, you poor puppy! I’m sending Bruschetta hugs to Gabby. :-)

On a happy note, your pomanders look great — I love the two-tone coloring!

Very CUTE!! I also fell in love with paper pomanders. I had to have them! I followed the instructions provided by vintage glam blog, it was a little more work, but well worth it!

Good Luck

Awww your puppy! I hope she is doing better soon!

I love the look of the pomanders! And it looks easy enough that even I could do it, haha. How much time/skill would you say it took to put them together?

I can save A LOT of time to whoever wants to do something like this.

Martha’s tissue Pom Poms. Instead of making the big ones cut the paper in HALF. you get the same effect for $1 each. I did this for my friend’s wedding and it looks exactly the same but with less work and time.

Not bad Miss SR they look lovely but too much work.

Love the tutorial, thanks so much!

I am sending as many happy thoughts and love and all that as possible to Gabby! Having a sick puppy is so mentally troubling. I hope her eye gets better!

here’s the link to the picture. they look a little squished cause it was up to ‘the boys’ to hang them…they had too much fun apparently.

My shih tzu Rudy often had eye lacerations too. Its a common problem, but I can’t imagine how painful! We had to give our puppy eye drops morning and night.

I made three of these and boy was I tired of folding and fanning by the end of it! I made three, two that will hang from shepherd hooks at the ceremony and one that will hang in the middle of our wedding arch. I used the vintage glam instructions too, and they can be applied to making lots of pom-pomorific wedding decor!

Poor Gabby! Do you have any idea how she lacerated her little eye? She’s in my thoughts…and thank goodness for emergency vets (we’ve been there a few times too)!

Oh…and I love the tissue pomanders. I wonder if the same concept would work with leftover fabric?

Those pomanders are adorable. If we move our wedding to spring, we’re definitely making some of these to decorate in the back yard! :)

Your poor baby is in my thoughts. Hope her eye gets better soon!

Poor Gabby :[ She likes to chase the cats around, so most likely one got her with her claws.

12 more days until you walk down the aisle!!
