Ceremony Readings

March 10th, 2009 @ 4:26 pm by Mrs. Kitten

I’ve been collecting ceremony readings for a while, and it’s about time to get our selections finalized! From what I know, most tropical, outdoor ceremonies go by pretty quickly, so I wanted to have several readings so that our ceremony isn’t over in the blink of an eye! I’ve picked a selection of both religious and non-religious passages that I think represent Mr. K and I as a couple. The only problem is that I’m not quite sure how many readings is TOO MANY. I’ve weeded some out and I think I’ll be able to incorporate the passages below without putting our guests to sleep.

Union by Robert Fulghum (Minister Reads)

You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making promises and agreements in an informal way. All those conversations that were held riding in a car or over a meal or during long walks - all those sentences that began with “When we’re married” and continued with “I will and you will and we will”- those late night talks that included “someday” and “somehow” and “maybe”- and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding. The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, “ You know all those things we’ve promised and hoped and dreamed- well, I meant it all, every word.” Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another- acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, and even teacher, for you have learned much from one another in these last few years. Now you shall say a few words that take you across a threshold of life, and things will never quite be the same between you. For after these vows, you shall say to the world, this- is my husband, this- is my wife.

The Art of a Good Marriage by Wilferd Arlan Peterson

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In the Art of Marriage: The little things are the big things. It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say ’I love you’ at least once a day. It is never going to sleep angry. It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship should not end with the honeymoon, it should continue through all the years. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have wings of an angel. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is finding room for the things of the spirit. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

Colossians 3:12-14 (Minister Reads)

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect unity.

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is patient, love is kind
It is not jealous, is not pompous,
it is not inflated, it is not rude,
it does not seek it’s own interests,
it is not quick tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice
over wrongdoing
but rejoices with the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.

372, The Book of a Thousand Prayers (Minister Reads)

O God, your Son Jesus began his ministry at a wedding celebration. May the joy that is experienced as two people begin a life together continue to grow and deepen through all that life has to offer along the way. May Jesus continue to transform the water of their every day to the wine of new vision, so what seems ordinary becomes transformed by love. May couples grow old together knowing the best wine is saved till last and that Jesus is the abiding guest and their companion on the way. We ask this in Jesus’ name.

The next one is pretty unorthodox. One would need a talented speaker to deliver it without getting tongue-tied! I actually have a friend in mind that I think would be perfect for this!

Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the couple who will decide where to go.
You’ll look up and down streets. Look them over with care.
About some you’ll say, “We don’t choose to go there.”
With your heads full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you’re too smart to go down, any not-so-good street.
And you may not find any
you’ll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you’ll head straight out of town.
It’s opener there
in the wide open air,
Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen,
don’t worry. Don’t stew.
Just go right along.
You’ll start happening too.
OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!
You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers
who soar to great heights!
You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have all the speed.
You’ll pass the whole gang, and you’ll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly you’ll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
Except when you don’t.
Because sometimes, you won’t.
You’ll get mixed up of course,
as you already know.
You’ll get mixed up
with so many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with great care and great tact
and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will indeed!
(98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)
KIDS, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!
So, be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
you’re off to great places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So … get on your way!

Which ones do you like best? What readings are you going to incorporate into your wedding?

I love the first one!

I second the Art of Marriage, we used it.

We also used a excerpt from “Lodged in the Heart and Memory” by Michael Ignatieff.

We’re just thinking about these now, but we’ll probably use Union and also the moody dinosaur story by Edward Monkton … it sounds just like us!

I had a Catholic ceremony and we chose 1 Corinthians 13:4. In addition, we asked if we could incorporate Union by Robert Fulghum at the end of our ceremony and our Priest gladly said “yes”. It’s a beautiful poem.

I am using Union, and the verses from Colossians and Corinthians, too!

For some reason, the Dr. Seuss reading reminds me more of high school graduation, but after re-reading it, I can see how it could work for a wedding, too.

Ahhh the Union! I love it. I cried when my Mom read it at our wedding :) This part gets me every time: “ You know all those things we’ve promised and hoped and dreamed- well, I meant it all, every word.”

I love the something unexpected of using Dr. Suess. Could be a great thing for you to have that as a special book in your home and reading it to future generations.

I used part of Oh The Places You’ll Go in my Valedictorian speech at my High School Graduation, I love it!

Haha. We had Union and The Places You’ll Go. The latter was a surprise- we’d asked our friend to read, but to choose his reading himself and surprise us!

I didn’t even consider Dr.Seuss but it may just be the perfect thing from the friend I want to do a reading, I’m just not sure it is church appropriate so we will have to see what the priest says.

We are having each of our siblings do a reading, for a total of three readings.

One of the readings we are planning to use is Union. The firt time I read it I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.

I never thought of using Oh the places you will go, but it’s definitely a great idea.

We haven’t decided whether we’re doing readings or not, but if we do Union will definitely be one of them. If you do the Dr Seuss, I’d love to see the video!

I LOVE these! I had such a hard time finding readings that I liked– we actually used something from the book Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, one of my favorites. I like your choices!

I love them ALL - but I like the first two and the Dr. Seuss ones the best! If you already have a friend in mind that can pull it off, then I think that the last one would add some originiality to your wedding day - it could be something that guests would never forget!

At my best friends wedding she had her cousin read the Dr. Seuss book (right from the book, which was extra cute) and it was actually much more moving and emotional than I think you think it would be considering the source! Everyone was tearing up, and afterward lots of my parents and their friends mentioned it to me how much they loved it. Go for it!

I love that you’re using Seuss! I thought about it but this book is always used at graduations, so I’m not sure. Another good Seuss quote is “You Know You’re in Love When You Can’t Fall Asleep Because Reality Is Finally Better than Your Dreams.” but it doesn’t rhyme, so its admittedly not as fun.

@ ready2bmrsd - I made my guest book out of the Dr. Seuss book On Beyond Zebra. I rebound it in a photo album cover, but inside it’s just the book! I hope it inspires people to write some more fun messages.
