Mrs. Crab Cake's Picture
Mrs. Crab Cake, Columbus, GA Age and Occupation: 25, Registered Nurse Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Director of Education and Living History for a museum Engagement Date: April 6, 2008 Wedding Date: June, 2009 Blogging Since: November 26, 2008 Venue: Holy Family Catholic Church, reception: National Infantry Museum About Me: I'm a perfectionist trying to balance two jobs, motherhood, my craft obsession, and wedding planning. I am obsessed with all things wedding, especially creative ideas for saving money and DIY projects. A Southern Belle at heart, I love anything southern, especially sweet tea, grits, afternoon thunder storms, crab cakes, and good old Southern hospitality. Mr. Crab Cake and I are planning a vintage inspired wedding with tons of Southern flare (can y'all say that with a thick Southern drawl?).
About Mrs. Crab Cake

One of the problems with having all my bridesmaids out of town is that I have no one to guilt into helping with the enormous amount of projects I have taken on.

Fortunately for me, I have some of the best friends ever here in town. They’ve been more than helpful.

Recently, I held the first of what I hope will be several successful Wedding Crafting Parties. My girlfriends here came over and helped me finish a few projects, and start a few new ones.

Remember this fabric?

c1

I was feeling very bored with my centerpieces (I know I haven’t shown them to y’all yet, I will, promise) and decided I needed something to spice up our tables, to add some color. I started looking at table runners and squares online and decided I was not going to shell out that kind of money. So, I decided I would make the darn things myself.

I cut the paisley fabric into 18″x18″ squares. I cut the celadon satin in 6.5″ strips.

Here’s my good friend BebeMoochi designing the first table square.

c2

And here’s what we ended up with:

c3

I’ll admit that the paisley and the satin don’t actually “match”, but they coordinate nicely, and frankly, my dears, I don’t care.

c4

Here’s a close up. You can really see that the colors don’t quite match. You can also see the touch of blue there in the paisley. I wish I’d have thought of that color earlier on, as it would have made a lovely addition to our already extensive color palette.

So, what do you think?

On the contrary, I think they go together nicely! The border picks up the accent colors in the paisley.

So jealous of your stitchery skills ;-) AND still waiting to see your reenactment attire!

These are gorgeous! The border picks up all the wonderful little detailing in the paisley that would be lost otherwise. And I love the contrast in textures. To me, it’s a perfect match. Absolutely stunning :)

Great job! I’m enlisting Mama Stiletto to do these for me :) I don’t have the patience to make theese! I’d been on the fence about doing the border with another fabric, but I think this definitely adds a lot to them. I’m so going to email your pictures to Mama S and see what she thinks.

Oh and after the wedding, I wonder if you could take these and create a quilt/throw as a keepsake? Just an idea.

Good job! :) I love the border, makes the squares seem more luxurious then just a plain hemmed square.

I think they look GREAT!
I am also with out about “not caring too much” if the color are not an exact match. I think that is a way to make youself crazy
And with the centerpeices on the squares….it will all blend together and look great!

Novice decorator here, so I apologize for what might be an obvious answer . . . will you be placing these on top of tables with white tablecloths? Round tables or square? Any chance of a sample pic of the whole thing together?

I’m trying to think of ways to dress up plain white tables and I like this look . . .

great idea. I’ve been considering how I could do something like this myself. Did you save a lot by DIYing the project? Do you have a price breakdown?

@Miss Bruschetta: @AliCherri1: Ok, I promise I’ll get out my dresses and my dress from and show y’all my gowns!!

@spraguebride: @cfitz621: I’m going to put them on 60″ rounds with ivory table cloths. I promise I’ll make sure you guys get to see the finished project, but I don’t have a 60″ round at my disposal. :-)

Cost Break Down: Paisley fabric : $43.15; Satin: $39.53; Total: 82.64. Price per square: about $4. Also, I have a ton of left over fabric that I am going to use to decorate the buffet tables, bar table, desert table, and gift/book table.
