Going Green with Hypericum Berries

March 12th, 2009 @ 2:53 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Since we’ve picked such an, err, unnatural shade of green for our accent color, I’ve pondered different possibilities for our floral elements. I thought it would be nice to add touches of green in the bridesmaids’ bouquets and in the boutonnieres. We’d then keep my bouquet and Mr. S’s boutonniere snowy white, to set us apart.

Since the shades of green we can get in nature tend to be either more of a lime or a deep forest green, I’ve played around with different ideas. One option I came across (isn’t searching via Google images fabulous?!) were hypericum berries. They’re kind of fun and modern, and they also add a textural element that I really like.

I’d love these boutonnieres for the guys. AND, when I mentioned this to our florist, it brought the price quote down by a couple of bucks per bout! With 10 bouts to buy, it definitely adds up!

Hmm, this might be a bit of an overload of berries, but you get the idea.

I really like the texture in this bouquet. While I know the ones for my girls will be smaller/less lush, I love that the overall “aura” of this bouquet leans toward the green side.

Sigh. I just have to keep telling myself that no one is going to hold the bouquets up against the bridesmaids’ shoes, so the hue of what’s in their hands doesn’t specifically have to match what’s on their feet. And I could also nix the idea completely, and give everyone white flowers. But… in the end, I think the green is fun and interesting! And why should I pick the exact same flowers for them as I am picking for myself, when I can instead have fun and add in some different blooms?!

I have a few other ideas I’m tossing around for green floral options, but the berries are definitely topping the list.

Have you added interesting greenery to your flowers?

We used those (my flowers were green and blue-no purple). I loved them!!! The made the srrangment look so fresh and the color is so vibrant. And its always nice to find something you like that is actually cheaper than other options :) As they dry they turn brown, in the event you are thinking about keeping your bouquet but most flowers brown anyway when you dry them.

I’m using hypericum berries in my bridesmaid bouquets and in the men’s boutonnieres. :)
I love the texture they add!
As for the shades of green I truly think you’ll be fine! To me most shades go together and like you said, no one will be hold the bouquets up to their shoes.

we’re using jade and cream roses for my girls, so i totally feel you on the green flowers =)

and i actually love the “overloaded” bouquet….it’s really different to me, than the usual roses and hydrangea.

Sigh…I love you. Bookmarking this post for SURE. What I’m thinking of doing, since our colors are the same, is giving the BMs all green, smaller bouquets, and having a bigger, mostly white (or mostly green, aahh) with some accenting color mixed in. What color ribbon are you going to tie your bouquet with? I think I’m going to use black to tie everything it.

@EAQ219:
Awww, thanks :)
If you choose to keep your bouquet all white, if you play with texture you can get a really cool bouquet that feels fun, but is still monochromatic.

Another idea for green I’m toying with is using looped lilly grass. Have you considered this? The first bouquet above is a bad example of it, but if you search around you should be able to find some good pictures. Kind of a fun way to add green in as well - you could always do touches of it for your bouquet to have a bit of green but not too much.

NO CLUE about the ribbon. Probably black for the bmaids. For me, errr. I’m not sure. I might try and take material from my mom’s wedding dress and use it there if that would work, so we’ll see. But then…it would be nice to have some color on mine..hmm!

They really do add a great textural element…and might be something I should consider adding to supplement the light green hydrangeas that are carrying on part of our color scheme, so thanks for the photos and ideas!

@gabbydancer:
A plus to these as bouts is I feel like they’re not going to get wilted/smooshed as the day goes on, as flowers would. The berries look pretty tough and can hold up to some hugs :)

Hypericum berries is what we are using for the guys bouts because we wanted something different. The bridesmaid are having arrangements with a variety of bright green flowers that will jump out against their black dresses. I will carry a white bouquet and the groom will have a white dahlia to match my bouquet.

I had a bouquet like the last one - roses, ranunculas, hydrangea and hypericum. My bridesmaids had the same, but only in greens and pinks. The green hydrangea and hypericum combo with pink flowers rocked my socks off.

I’m doing the flowers for a friend’s wedding and I just used the handy “Share this post” feature to send it to her. I love that boutonnière! I did something very similar for my wedding, the bouts were red hypericum berry, and a small spray rose.

The berries are just great.

The shades of green in the boutonniere remind me of the green zinnias I used to buy at a Farmers Market in Memphis.

I do love those berries. When used sparingly they do create a wonderful, modern, texture.

I love the look of hypericum berries, and I think they will look lovely with the rest of your colors! Our bridesmaids are wearing navy and I just went with blue and dark purple flowers. They won’t match, but they fit, and I’m sure yours will be the same!

I love hypericum berries, and moss is one of my favorite green elements as well. Those bouquets that you posted are fantastic!

I’m using hypericum berries too! Those along with some green button mums in the bouts, and button mums and hydrangeas in the BM bouquets.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the greens matching, I think in the end people are going to get your color scheme even if everything doesn’t match perfectly. I think things look better with a few different shades of the same color rather than using the exact same color for everything.

u could use white flowers and a non-floral element in your preferred shade of green!

My planner just suggested using hypericum berries as an accent floral in all of my arrangements, and at first I had no idea what she was talking about. But I love them! They are the perfect green for our wedding, and they lend themselves as a wonderful neutral for just about anyone’s color palette! I love the boutiniere picture!!

I used that color green for my wedding and it turned out wonderful. So sharp and modern. We used the berries and my girls flowers were white freesia with the buds left on the flowers. Interesting shape and combined the green and white nicely. Let me know if you’d like to see pics.

@Miss Mascara:
Thanks, Miss M! I always need reinforcement that I shouldn’t bee too neurotic about matching :)

@cleep:

I was thinking of using these in the bouts but I fell in love with fiddlehead ferns and I don’t think they’ll look so hot together. I will try to get them into my bouquet though, I am going to carry all green.

We used hypericum berries for all of our men as well. My husband’s was red/orange, the groomsman were pinkish and the dad’s were the bright green you show above. They were beautiful, fun and way less expensive than other options. (and in many ways the green were my favorite!)

BTW your florist should be able to spray a little bit of color to your flowers. For example the could take the white flowers and spray in some green just at the tips or take the green hydrangeas and spary the tips a brighter shade of green.
