What’s Your FAVORite?

March 12th, 2009 @ 11:21 am by Mrs. Joey

We’ve been going back and forth about favors for a while. Even though we’ve started making Limoncello, we’re not sure that we have enough time to make enough for everyone. We’ve come up with a list of ideas, but we need help deciding.

  1. Limoncello - Our original choice, but getting bottles can be pricey and we’d need to come up with an alternative for non-drinkers and for those that are underage.
  2. Sri-Lankan trail mix and Mr. Joey’s family’s special Chex mix - We’d need to order this yummy trail mix from Sri-Lanka, and we’d need to package it right before the wedding to insure freshness.
  3. Recipe cards - We thought about designing recipe cards with instructions on how to make special dishes from our reception.
  4. A greatest hits mixed CD - We could make a few versions, so a couple wouldn’t go home with the two of the same CD.
  5. Custom made luggage tags - We could come up with a few templates and personalize them for each guest.
  6. Mini puzzle - We thought of taking pictures of us and turning them into mini puzzles, but we’re not sure anyone would really want a mini puzzle of us. This option could also be a little too expensive for us.

We’re not sure which to pick, but we’re leaning toward the luggage tags or the limoncello.

What do you think? Which option would you choose? Are you deciding between a few favor options?

I like the Sri-Lankan trail mix idea. Just because it’s personal to you while still being edible, which it’s been made pretty clear on the boards people like best. The CD might also be nice since you mentioned Mr. Joey especially is a music-lover.

I think limoncello would be awesome, but the trail mix would be my second choice.

I think, that before deciding what favors you are going to give, you should consider the theme of your wedding. I am going to have a flower and candle themed wedding, which resulted in the decision to give each table a flower name. This led to a revelation to give packets of seeds to the guests according to their table name. I am really interested in what your theme is and how your favors could compliment that.

I vote for the trail mix. Cuz I wouldn’t want a puzzle, your guests who came alone will want both CDs (you’ll have to make two for all of them!), recipe cards are a cute idea too though…I don’t know about the luggage tags, I’d have to see them first! But all cute favor ideas!

Option #2! So unique — and edible favors are always appreciated and used.

I would say the limoncello is a great idea - but my personal fav. is the recipe cards! Although I am a recipe collecting fiend… so I would most likely ALWAYS choose recipes :-)

I agree with aja0829 … limoncello would be a great gift if you can pull it off. I really don’t see the puzzles being kept by most people …

Hands down, Limoncello! Every year we have a holiday party, our friends bring us gifts. But the one gift we always remember and enjoy is our friend, Cary’s home-made Linoncello. I love that you guys are making it yourself, it’s unique, it’s TASTY, and the most exciting of the choices (other than the Shri Lankan trail mix–I think that would be neat and a fantastic nod to your heritage).

I vote for trail mix!!! a puzzle would just be kind of weird, and i’m tired of seeing luggage tags and cds. I don’t think people will really use them. Limoncello is cool too, but I think people will already have other drinks to choose from at the reception so limoncello isn’t really necessary.

I really like the recipe card idea the best. Easy, inexpensive, and as a guest I’d love to try out making the dishes! (Assuming your food is going to be delicious, of course :) )

I like the limoncello or the trail mix. Luggage tags could be cute and double them as escort cards?

My vote is for the Limoncello too! First instincts are usually the best. Stick with yours!

I’m always in favour of edible favours! The recipe card is also a cute idea (and could easily double as an escort or place card!)

Limoncello or trail mix. If it can’t be eaten it will likely be thrown out. This might be harsh, but it’s true.

Can you find some friends or family to help make the limoncello so you get it all made in time? That’s my favorite idea, and if it was your first instinct, it’s probably what is the most personal favor for you guys.

Recipe cards…you don’t have to worry about them going bad. They can be super personalized, especially since they will be of food at your wedding. And they will be inexpensive.

Miss. Joey,

Being Sri Lankan i know exactly how yummy-licious fresh trail mix can be - with just the right mix of spices. And I’m thrilled to tell you that you might not have to ship it all the way from Sri Lanka. There’s a chain of stores in North America called Saravana Bhavan - and they’ve got some pretty authentic tasting trail mix (mild and flavorful). Not sure if they’ve got one in Seattle - but I’m sure it would’nt be hard to find that out.

If not, make a trip down to Toronto - there’s loads of Sri Lankan stores that sell the real deal!

I say this only because i had my favors shipped from Sri Lanka (handmade & painted elephants in fuschia wicker baskets with proceeds going towards redevelopment of tsunami stricken villages) and it was super stressful - the process can be quite expensive and lengthy as well.

Hope that helps!

I like the Limoncello! You could always come up with a funky fresh lemonade drink for those who want to skip on the alcohol.

I also love option #2! :) Edible favors are the best! You could use the Limoncello in your guest welcoming bags if you plan on doing them, that way you wouldn’t need as many!
All your ideas are really cute though!

Go with one of the editable or drinkable favors. It is more likely that your guests will enjoy them and not stick them in a closet somewhere.

I too LOVE the recipe idea! Mainly because I love recipes, but also because it can be done very cost effectively and still mean a lot :) I would really enjoy that as a guest and it would definitely be something I would use.

We did ChexMix at our wedding, and yes, I did spend all afternoon a few days beforehand in order to make enough. However, if you put it in a nice punch bowl (or two) with a scoop and plastic favor bags with twist ties at the side, with a sign directing the guests to take some, you won’t have to package it yourselves!
We made 14 batches, I believe, in order to feed 150 estimated guests. We had 75 come and so we were handing out the big gallon-sized full batch bags to family members for their trips home at the end of the reception. If you do present it for guests to package themselves, do go ahead and make less than you think you need, because not everyone will want to/be able to eat it.

I love the recipe card idea. If originality matters to you, then I would go with that because I’ve never seen that at a wedding before, and as someone who loves to cook, I would be pleased as punch to get those as a favour….I agree with Mrs. Corn too, they would be an inexpensive paper craft and could be done in advance!

Mix it up! If you have a “favor table” you can have limoncello for those that drink, sri lanken trail mix for those who want a snack thats out of the ordinary, and recipe cards for those that are full and aren’t limoncello fans. No rule saying you have to have just one thing or have enough of EACH thing for everyone.

like mdarrah i say have more than one. i was thinking perhaps setting bottles of limoncello next to a bowl or tray filled with little bags of trail mix on a table with a sign that says something along the lines of
“choose one” (obviously, you can make that more creative). the ability to choose my own favor would really excite me if i were a guest!

If your heart’s set on the limoncello, you could make lemon cordial (or perhaps lime so they’re more easily told apart) for those who don’t drink — perhaps alternating them on the table so that people could trade if necessary. There are cute templates and a reciepe on the vintage glam website: http://vintageglamblog.com/2009/03/06/freebie-fridays-vintage-cordial-labels/

A friend of mine went to a wedding a few years back where the favors were a secret family recipe and she attached a cute card of it to a bag of dried herbs that went into the recipe. I think it was an Italian Rosemary chicken dish. You could by the bags and spices in bulk and it would be rather inexpensive and not super time consuming. Make an assembly line. :) Good luck!

I’d do the Limoncello–sounds delicious and original! For the youngsters and the non-drinkers, you could do a fancied up version of lemonade, such as an Arnold Palmer (lemonade with iced tea) or a Tiger Woods (lemonade with hibiscus herbal tea). Yum!
