The Perfect Updo

March 13th, 2009 @ 10:53 am by Mrs. Mascara

I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect hairstyle for the wedding day. Here is my criteria for picking a style:

  1. An updo. Don’t get me wrong, I love the way a half-up style looks with a veil on, but I have to be realistic. Since it will be early September when Mr. M and I get hitched and my hair does not get along with humidity, an updo is a necessity. The last thing I want to have to worry about on that day is if my perfectly straightened hairstyle has been attacked by the frizz!
  2. Something that is not too much of a departure from my normal look. I want to look like myself (of course, with a little improvement). After all, that’s who Mr. M asked to marry in the first place, right? My trademark has always been my bangs, long and swept to the side. Every time I get a haircut I always come out with a slight variation of this same style. I want a wedding day style in which I can wear my bangs on the side like I always do.
  3. It can’t be too fussy or elaborate. I know I’m going to be really nervous and excited on the day of, and sitting in a chair for two hours while someone plays with my hair isn’t going to help calm my nerves.
  4. I need to be able to add my flowers in to finish off the look!

Here are the top contenders for my wedding day hairstyle:

The Perfect Updo : wedding hair Hairupd From Martha Stewart

Here’s one with a flower. I’m loving the Russian veil attached, especially since I won’t be wearing my veil during the reception!

The Perfect Updo : wedding hair Flower Flower from portabello on Etsy

This style has a little more volume, and Carrie is looking gorgeous, as always.

Which one is your favorite? Where did you for inspiration for your wedding day ’do?

Thanks for this! I have pretty much the same criteria for hairstyles so I’ll add these to my folder of pics! Sooner or later though, I’ll have to actually pick one! It’s so hard!

I LOVE the Carrie updo (and I think you do too, since you have 3 shots of it!) =)
I have thick, straight hair and I am also leaning toward these styles.

Good luck on your choice!

I love the last one! I think you could definitely add a flower to that look and it would look beautiful….Thanks for the pictures! Am going to add this one to my folder.

Thank you, thank you! As I posted yesterday, my trials (hair and makeup) are this Sunday, and I love your first inspiration photo!

I love the last one!

I’ve been looking for a great updo as well that has some structure it it, but isn’t so severe in the front. I love the beautiful pinned up curls, but also the side swept bangs. Gorgeous!

Ha, I’m looking to do pretty much the same thing and I think I have 2 separate inspiration pictures of Carrie Underwood. ^_^ I love her hair the most of the options above. It’s soft and slightly unstructured without being messy.

I guess we’re all on the same page, this is pretty much exactly what I was thinking! :) Mine might be a little less structured though and a little more ‘messy’ looking.

I’ve had that first Martha Stewart photo ripped out for months! The bangs make it modern but still casual. Love it!

I really like Carries. Not too fussy but still elegant.

I like Carrie’s too! You know what is great about this– you can see the hair from all angles. So many times, you see a picture from the side, but its impossible to tell what the other side, or the front looks like.

I love #2! :) She’s also one of my favorite Etsy sellers!

I used the Martha Stewart for my inspiration!! I was SO happy with the side chignon in my pictures. It ’softened’ the updo, in my opinion!

PS–I added a flower to it too!

I’ve been carrying that Martha photo around in my wedding binder for the past few months as my main hair-spiration! ;) But I really love the photo of Carrie, too.

The first photo is the same one I gave my hairdresser for my hair trial last weekend!! I actually want to look exactly like her, haha. I liked the front of her hair, but I didn’t like the back bun. I asked for the back to look a little more like Carrie Underwood’s hair (though less messy), complete with the volume in the front. I’ll make a few tweaks the day of, but overall, I was pretty happy with it.

This is my wedding day “do” as well. I’ve been collecting pictures to bring to my trial, and I think I just found a couple more…thanks Mascara!

im a fan of the carrie underwood one. the bun is too big for me. i guess that is good for me because my hair is much shorter :)
