About Mrs. Joey

Pieces of Us

March 14th, 2009 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Joey

I’ve been to some weddings with some really amazing themes. One wedding I went to a few years ago was completely red and teal… down to the straws. It was obvious the couple thought long and hard about how to incorporate their wedding colors into every aspect of their wedding.

Our theme? Us?! We decided that WE would be our theme — traditions and wedding protocol aside.

One of our first us-themed decisions was the cake. Neither one of us are really cake people (I know, we’re weird), so we decided to go with an after dinner treat we both love, cream puffs. Mr. Joey used to live in Brooklyn and whenever I visited, we’d go to Beard Papa for a delicious cream puff. My favorites are vanilla and green tea.

So it only made sense that we go with cream puffs. People have cupcakes instead of cake, so why not cream puffs? I told my friend Mary, who’s a baker in Washington DC, about the cream puffs. She thought it was a great idea. She even volunteered to make them if we provided the supplies. Perfect!

Speaking of making cream puffs from scratch, this leads me to the second theme that inspires our wedding decisions — home/handmade. We want our wedding to be special and full of elements you can’t just buy pre-made on a wedding website. Elements of our wedding can definitely be replicated, but it requires a little work. Yes, you can buy limoncello, but it’s not the same as making it in a 5 month process, creating personal labels, and bottling it yourself. We don’t have a lot of money to spend on the wedding, but the time we put into the details will be worth it.

What themes are you working with in your wedding? Are you building the wedding around a central piece (wedding invitations, venue style)?

A friend of mine had Beard Papa’s at their wedding in addition to cake. I think everyone was more excited about eating them because they are soooo good! Some friends of ours even stuffed a few in their Chinese take out boxes (part of the wedding favors) for a late night snack!

we’re having a chocolate fountain to replace the cake, because Mr LL and I don’t like cake either!!
Good to hear of other brides finding ways to personalize dessert without gypping your guests!

That’s such a cute idea!! Our theme is “Lost Traditions” which is trying to incorporate the 8 or so cultures that make up the two of us. It’ll be a mish-mash but it’ll be “US” too!!

DF doesn’t like cake either. So we’re having an ice cream cake (his favorite) for cutting/pictures and a dessert buffet. Fruit or cream pies, cheesecake, toffee puddings, hot fudge cakes, tarts, cream puffs, eclairs, lots of pastries! And fresh fruit to go with it all. (My favorite) Yum!

I had my first taste of Beard Papa in Vancouver at my BFF’s wedding last year. They are delish and I. personally, would rather feast on one of those than cake. :)

Love the cream puff idea.

While I would love to turn my wedding into a scene out of a Victorian world, I knew that was not possible, so we are going with something more like undertones of Victorian rather than a full out themed wedding. So the gentlemen will be wearing cutaway coats with ascots, I have lace in the bridesmaids dresses (since I ended up not getting it in mine). My dress is ivory with lovely antique looking beading. The invites and cake will have scrollwork on them and a monogram and we are using damask linens on the tables. I will have candelabras as some of the centerpieces and old, antique-like silver pitchers and teapots with roses for others. I am a Victorian at heart and just love how it is coming together. Oh we will also be doing a Victorian rotary waltz as our first dance. The FH is doing wonderful at practicing.

Mmm, I *love* cream puffs! I think green tea puffs would taste delicious - I bought some matcha powder from Uwajimaya when I was in Seattle last year, and I was going to use it to make green tea cookies - but now I’d love to find out how I could make green tea cream puffs. :)

I actually have NO idea what our theme is going to be. This is hard!

I love cream puffs!!!! Maybe you can put food coloring to the cream to match your color scheme :-)

I think more people should make themselves the theme of their wedding. Also, green tea cream puffs are amazing. Are you going to do a variety of cream puff flavors or all one?

@Miss Piglet: They have them in LA too!
@West Coast Bride: I haven’t tried their cream puffs. We may go with Than Brothers — they gave us a great deal
@Crash: We’d love to do more than one flavor but it depends on what the baker can make

We had the same “us” theme and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. And the cream puffs for dessert idea- AWESOME!

i think this is really true. especially amongst the brides who follow the blogs… :) i’m not a huge cake person so unless a parent or future-parent insists- it’ll be cookies! or something else i like more.
