Bake Me a Cake

March 16th, 2009 @ 11:52 am by Mrs. Mascara

I don’t think a wedding cake is the first thing that most people imagine about their wedding day, but my mom makes wedding cakes all the time, so I’ve been thinking about mine for a few years now. When I was younger (a lot younger) I wanted this cake from the Wilton cake book. Sorry the picture isn’t the greatest.

It consists of three separate cakes on a garden cake stand, with lots of buttercream flowers and swagging. Good thing I didn’t get married back then.

Now that I’m old and boring, I want a simple wedding cake. Maybe because my mom has to make it and I don’t want her to have to spend hours and hours making flowers out of icing. Or maybe because I have more modern taste now, and prefer clean lines, and not a lot of extra “stuff”. Forgive me for the kindergarten drawing skills, but I was imagining what type of cake I’d like to have for our wedding, and rather than spend hours searching for a picture of what I was thinking of, I figured it would be quicker to draw it instead.

It’s a stacked cake with white fondant and fondant pearl trim, topped with hydrangeas. I’d preferably like for it to be on a pedestal stand, although my mom might kill me, because she thinks cakes are going to tip over when they’re on a pedestal. I’d like for there to be some sort of monogram on the top, or possibly in icing on one of the tiers.

What do you think, is it cute or boring? What would you add/take away from the cake to make it unique?

Cake photo by Wilton from Cakes ’N Things. Drawing is my own.

Is your mom a professional baker? I’m also definitely a fan of a more simplistic cake design!

I am doing a band around the top tier in our wedding color. Then they are placing a same color medallion on the band that has our monogram on it.

I like it, but I think it would look nice to have the monogram in icing on one of the layers. You could have her pipe it in white if you don’t want to lose the nice, clean look.

I like it a lot, but I would do without the monogram.

Very classic looking. It cracks me up to see those very extravagant cakes that used to be all the rage! A girl I know got married just a couple years ago, and she still went with that kind of cake - complete with the water fountains, bridges between the layers, and tons of swagging frosting!

i’d go with the monogram piped on a layer because the hydrangeas on top are enough.

and to be honest, the cake is the first thing i think about!

I like the design it is simple and very elegant. I agree that the monogram may be too much paired with the hydrangeas on top.

What about doing the hydrangeas on top and your monogram on one of the tiers?

I love it. But I would also go with the monogram piped on it some where. Or what about your names piped on simple and romantic. I saw this really cute picture of just their names on their cake. But I love that it is so simple!

I think it’s cute and timeless. Plus, sometimes it’s the simple cakes that are more difficult because you have to do everything just right because there’s not way to cover it up after.

I took pretty much the same hand-drawn picture to two different bakers. Both of them made me add swirls and swags and dots and designs, because they said the cake was “too plain”. I gave in, because I figured they were the experts. They also then charged me extra for those fancy designs!

Then I went to the third baker, and she loved the simple-ness of the cake. Her only suggestion, which we took, was to add two extra layers that were half the height of the other layers. So now, we have a five tier cake, which I NEVER would have thought we’d have. B/c two of the layers are shorter (the top layer and layer #4) it won’t be too overwhelming.

So….what if you added some shorter layers in, to give the cake a little extra something, without forcing your mom to go crazy with piped icing? :-)

You draw way better than I can even imagine things! I don’t have a vision for my cake, and I need one by April (which is when I’m visiting my venue!) I love your design, it looks so simply chic!!

I would do a band around the middle tier with your monogram iced onto it, instead of on top. That would give the cake a little bit more visual interest, and keep the top from looking too cluttered. I too have saved time on image searching by just sketching out what I want. My drawings are laughably poor, but with tons of wedding odds and ends (and DIY decor) it’s the only way for me to get a clear sense of whether what’s in my head really can be done (or should, depending on how it looks when I’m done!)

I vote it’s good as is. Just knowing that you designed it will be so much fun.

I love your cake! I think its simple but has enough for you to look at.
I also drew out my cake because I couldnt find anything that I liked so I whipped out the color pencils and went to work.

I love simple designs in bold colors, so your close is *almost* perfect for me! Add a little more color and I’d be all for it!

One word of advice: Hydrangeas are so finicky (I used them at my wedding) and they tend to wilt when exposed to cold (like a refrigerator) or hot (like sunlight from a window). Maybe look into a silk one, a sugar hydrangea or use a water tube on the hydrangea if you do decide to go with them.

@Miss Bruschetta: my mom makes cakes out of her house. She doesn’t have a bakery (yet) but she’s been doing it for about 10 years now pretty successfully!
@AnnieBelle: Thanks for the tips on hydrangeas. I’ve heard they are hard to work with, so I’ll keep your ideas in mind!

Your cake idea looks a lot like my cousin’s wedding cake did. Hers was coconut with regular frosting, not fondant, but it was very plain, white, and had green hydrengeas on the top. :) It looked very lovely, as does yours.

I think it’s a great idea! Maybe you and your mom can compromise on a pedestal…
